If you have a basic setup as far as software and hardware (ie; no proxy run-through, no ICS, etc) then a hub will not work with two PCs....plain and simple. There is no IP address distinction from the cable modem and therefore, the IP address cannot be matched up with the correct MAC address for the destination PC. This is the job of the router. It will build that MAC address match once again and then the data will flow to the correct machine. There are plenty of cheap gateway/routers at BestBuy and CompUSA for between $30-$45.
