Default Poor GIGABIT ethernet performance

I currently have 3 systems that support GIGABIT ethernet now and I've currently been having difficulty in getting good performance. I have setup a fileserver with an AMD K6III 450MHZ 75FSB, ATA 100 card, 200GB seagate drive and Intel pro 1000 gigabit ethernet card.

I did a benchmark with Sisoft sandra and was severely disappointed with my results after doing a Peer to Peer connection with a P4 3.5GHZ 250FSB gaming rig. Thinking that it was the slow K6III at fault, I did a direct hookup of my laptop and the gaming rig (laptop supports gigabit ethernet natively) and when I ran sisoft sandra, I got a measly 28MB/s from 10MB/s on 100Mb ethernet. Sisoft sandra says I should be getting 54MB/s with a PCI version of gigabit ethernet card and 97MB/s with PCI-X.

Any ideas on how I can improve performance of my gigabit ethernet connection?
Is this normal on a Peer to Peer connection?
Are these the max speeds that everyone has been achieving?
Please help, thanks.

Update: For got to mention that on 100 base networking, the K6III system gets 7MB/s and with gigabit ethernet it gets the same 7MB/s!
