SP2 means service pack2. It's a big update for windows wich contains lots of patches etc
No, you don't need to do a fresh install, but it is the best way to prevent problems in the future. In all honesty, I actually have upgraded about 25 or so computers from win 2000 to XP without doing a format and reinstallation. I felt that the time saved by running the upgrade justified the irritations of problems that might come in the future.

No, Fernando, if you do a format and reinstall, you won't keep anything that's on the hard drive. That's the problem with doing one. If you have any way to backup the files you need, I would still recommend a fresh install. If you can't or think it's more trouble than it's worth you can do as Major suggested and just use the symantec removal tool and download the correct patch BEFORE you upgrade. And patch BEFORE you connect to the internet. The patch to prevent this worm is KB835732 and should be fairly easy to find on the Windows downloads site.
