Default How to uninstall update in Vista? Computer wont fully boot

I am looking for ideas as for how to uninstall a group of updates that is almost certainly keeping my friends computer from fully booting into Vista.

After powering up everything goes fine until the Windows Vista startup screen. The problem is the computer never fully boots up. It stays at the Vista startup screen with the green bar constantly scrolling from left to right indefinitely. I booted into safe mode and sorted the updates by date and uninstalled the ones I could from the last group of updates that were installed. Some wouldn't uninstall because I got an error about the installer service wasn't able to run in safe mode. After a reboot the machine started up fine and was able to log in with no problems.

A day or so later the same problem happens. I'm guessing the update(s) installed themselves again since the autoupdate and install automatically setting is likely still set. This machine is at a residence where there is no network connectivity and is the result for the flood of updates when temporary network connectivity is available.

My question is how can I fix this when safe mode won't let me uninstall the updates I suspect? I had an old ERD 2005 disc I use to uninstall updates that would crash a system with, but it doesn't seem to work with Vista. Are there any bootable tools out there that can be used for Vista in this case to uninstall updates? I've looked online, but I'm not having much success.

Thanks in advance.
