Default Curious about HDMI in vid card...

I've noticed that now alot of higher end video cards are supporting HDMI. I was reading the specs about the ATI HD4870 and noticed that it supported 7.1 audio via HDMI. How does that work? Does the card have some kind of audio hardware built in it, so you could just use your video card for audio too? Or does it use your existing sound card for the processing, and just sends a signal out the HDMI to your reciever?

This is a complete dream, but down the road I'd love to have an HDMI vid card that I can run to a 7.1 reciever, and run that 1080p to a TV via HDMI.
