Maybe it's just me, but I've never heard of having to hold down the ctrl key to get to the extended boot menu, always thought it was F8.
As to your problem, I doubt it's being caused by a virus. If I were you, I'd buy a newer Operating System version than '98 SE

My guess would be to reset everything to defaults.
Reset your bios by turning off your computer, unplugging it and pressing the 'on' button a few times, removing the silver coin-like battery from the motherboard for about five seconds, then replacing the battery/power and starting up again.
Go to the command prompt and type 'ipconfig /release' (without the quotes) and press enter
then type 'ipconfig /renew' and enter again
Then try connecting to the internet again.
