My friendsPC has a Quad Core Q6600 at 3.5Ghz, and if he downloads the NaturalMotion Euuphoria 2.7LE editor, his system struggles to simulate it as soon as more than 3 people are having physical interactions. And remember, there is no fancy graphics, all the computer has to process is a few very simple one shade models, and a few squares. So in GTA 4, you have an entire immenseley detailed and power hungry game, and then you shove a very CPU intensive physics animation engine in it, and you have to get it to work. Rockstar and the guys at NaturalMotion spent years perfecting and implementing it into GTA, and getting it to run well. The programming behind it and how well they got it into the game is simply extremely impressive.
The level of detail in the rest of the game is staggering. You have to play it for a LONG time to notice it, but once you do. You realise just how living the city is that Rockstar created. For instance, i was walking in Alderney, someguy chucks a can out of the car and hits a police car, the cop gets out and trys to arrest the guy. Some taxi guy pulls over and disagree's with the cop, pulls out his baseball bat and starts fighting. Meanwhile the guy that chucked the rubbish speeds away, as the guy speeds away, someone across the road fixing there car see's, gets there phone out, and rings the cops. The 2 sets of cops are both disagreeing with each other trying to solve another crime, and then suddenly i get motored by one of GTA 4's lunatics. Go find another game that offers another experience like that. |
I don't deny anything you said. I've stated the engine is top notch, and those moments you talk about are interesting as well. But what I'm saying is that is really not what makes a good game. If I was actually having fun with the game and experienced those things you said -- awesome! But to me, the whole gameplay was actually less original than any of the GTA's in the past ... so when those events happened I really didn't care much about them cause I wasn't having fun.
That's why I think the game is flawed at its core. They should have worked on making more creative missions, and then worked on adding those little Liberty City moments after the fundamentals of the game were adequetly crafted.
All in all, it seems like the main gameplay/storyline was an afterthought.
