Yes, Ubuntu doesn't ship with any Mp3 codecs. Evidently there's some legal complications with codecs by default, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, here's how you get Mp3 codecs and many other that you might need.

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-base gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-pitfdll
