I think the external or secondary internal hard drive idea is much better solution, especially when time is a factor. The idea of remote backup is safe and smart, but it's not the best idea when you suspect a hard drive is failing.
Get Acronis TrueImage 10 and pick up a hard drive locally. Make a full backup on full compression, and you can easily compress your entire drive down to nothing and save it to the other drive.
