A hacker used to be someone who was particularly adept at gettng into the guts of a computer to sort out tricky problems. A 'Cracker' was always someone malicious. Therefore you could be both.

However the media seems to have settled upon the title of 'Hacker' as the malicious one, hence most of the world believe 'Hacker' to be a malicious term.
