One thing to try before any registry edits is to see any are simply "hidden from view"? A simple right click on the taskbar and going into the taskbar/start menu properties screen reveals the customize button there. That will open up a screen for choosing one of three options. always show, always hide, hide when inactive. Make sure the program is loaded when first looking there to see if the always hide option was set.
