Talking Internet gateway disabled

Hi I have a problem I can't seem to solve. My computer is hooked up to a router and then to a Broadband cable modem (I have two computers hooked up). The internet gateway is disabled and will not re-enable. I was able to work around that by adding in a local internet connection and playing around with it until I could get onto the internet. The problem with this is I have a few programs that will not connect to the internet because the software is looking for the Gateway and I can't see it on my network. I have a 1.2 mhz computer running win XP pro and I use zone labs firewall and have win XP firewall off. All the software is up to date and I use several programs to remove ad-aware, spyware, trogans etc, also I use norton system works and anti virus. So I am sure it is not one of those. Most likely it's something I need to turn on in the services, but I am snsure. How can I get the gateway to re-enable so I can use that connection and get rid of the local area connection.

Thank you
