do this after logging in as root when the computer starts up.
tail -f /var/log/messages
hit ctrl-alt-f6 login again, type startx
then hit ctrl-alt-f7 and look at the log file.
maybe you didn't even install a window manager, alot of people who run servers don't put gui's in
