I have a firepod and use cubase/reason. It was working fine... until I installed a wireless card (my firewire ports are only on a PCI card I installed... not onboard) and I started getting random clicks and cutouts when I was playing the audio back through the firepod. I thought it was an IRQ conflict, so I moved the wireless card into another PCI slot.... but nothing changed. Eventually, I figured out that if I disable the wireless card all of the clicks and cutouts go away.... so now that's what I do if I am doing any recording and or audio playback. It's an extra step to turn it off.... but whatever, it takes about 2 seconds. So mabye try disabling any devices that you aren't using while recording?

Also, I know you said that your CPU isn't under heavy strain... but I have also seen (well, heard really) this happen on big files with lots of tracks and lots of plug-ins going..... although, with a computer as powerful as yours, this shouldn't be a problem unless the session is just HUGE.

I've also heard about this happening if your latency settings are too low? But again, you have a smoking machine... so I can't see this being the problem (I run 3ms latency at 24bit/96kHz on an AMD64 3000+, 512mb RAM, 80 GB 7200 RPM setup and never have any issues).
