Adobe Techniques

This would be a nice place to post any type of technique or shortcut used in Adobe graphics programs i.e. Photoshop, Illustrator, ImageReady, InDesign, and any other adobe prog.

Here's a neat Photoshop trick used to make a sort of "cave wall' effect.

-Open a new document preferably NOT high res. (a setting of 72 will do just fine)
-Make sure your color pallet is set to black and white
-Go to 'filters'-'render'-'clouds'
-Then go to 'filters'-'noise'-'add noise'STOP-- Set noise amount to '3' and make sure it is set to 'gaussian' and click 'ok'
-Now go to your 'channels' pallet-'create new channel-"Alpha 1"'-and do the "clouds" and "noise" process again.
-Once that is finished, select your "layer 1" from the layers pallet
-Go to "filters'-'render'-'lighting effects'STOP-- set intensity to...
-30 for matte look
-50 for semi glossy look
-higher than 50 for mettalic look
-Move light source to desired location
-Then select 'Alpha 1' down at the bottom of the lighting effects dialoge box. Make sure 'white is high' is selected. Then move the cursor to 'mountainous' Click 'ok'
-Now create a new layer. Set new layer to 'color' and fill with a dark green or almost black blue.
You can adjust opacity and filter as desired.

This should now look like a slimy cave wall :)

I'll have more tips and stuff later!

Good idea Mac.

If any of you aspiring artists out there have am Adobe Trick or Technique that you would like to share post it here in this thread.

Posted by: ekĘsine

i am pretty sure you can't do that in illustrator or imageready. pictures are a must with graphics tutorials it helps clear things up and users can see the finished results.

Posted by: Qiranworms

I like everything but the "green slime" effect. I think a sort of stone colour would be better...

Posted by: T1junkie

nice

I have a simple little trick for Desktop pitures

create a blank picture that is the same size as your resolution

use the cloud filter to apply your two favorite colors

and save a JPG file and set it as you desktop pict.

its really simple and I think it makes a great desktop pict.

some PSP basic shortcuts

Ctrl+T - transform
Ctrl+C - copy :)
Ctrl+V - paste :)
Ctrl+Z - undo :)
etc...
to move object use
Shift <- (or ->) - moves objet faster
Ctrl <- (or ->) - moves objects really slow (really good for working with lines etc)

For PSP tehniqes i recomend going to the library :)

hey Girly the file attachment is not working
i don't know why?

This is a semi-simple process that can turn any new photo into a glorious old photo :)

-Select your photo (anything will do)
-Goto 'layers' in the menu bar, and select, "add adjustment layer" and select "hue/saturation"
-Click ok
-When the 'hue/sat.' dialogue pops up, select the 'colorize' checkbox and for a sepia tone look, move the hue slider to around 30-40. Then adjust the other sliders to your liking
-Click ok when done

Now you have a hue/saturation adjustment layer. To add the following photo effects, you must have your original photo layer slected.

To add film grain
-Have your original photo layer selected
-Goto 'filter' then to 'noise' then to 'add noise'
-Set noise level to 5
-Set noise style to guassian
-If noise is set to 'monochromatic' deselect

To darken the photo edges
-Make sure your original photo layer is selected.
-Get your Burn tool from the toolbar
-set your brush size to a huge size that is big enough to cover one of the photo's corners
-Apply burn effect as wanted
*Be careful not to over do it. When you burn a photo, you lose valuable data.

To add photo border
-Make sure your original photo layer is selected (I can't even begin to tell you how extremely important this step is!:))
-Get your rectangular selection tool from the tool bar
-Select the part of the photo you do NOT want the frame to show up on
-Right click or control click (depending on your OS) and select "Select Inverse" from the drop down list.
-Then make sure your background color is set to a very white yellow-ish color
-Goto 'edit' 'fill' 'fill with background color' and click 'ok'
-DO NOT DESELECT YOUR SELECTION AREA!
-Use the burn tool again to create a consistency with the photo and the frame.

Final touches
If you want to (and I did) you can add some more photo effects to your photo. You can add film scratches among other things by just using the correct paintbrush arrangement :)

I used to have the pic files, but the server move lost them. I'll see if I can find them on my HD...

Posted by: technique

Well here's one of mine
Its a grunge one for all of you that dont like to use brushes(works best with circles)

Spatter - Spray Radius 24
Smoothness 5

Glass - Distortion 5
Smoothness 3
Texture Frosted
Scaling 100%
No Invert

Noise - Amount 11.68%
Distribution Uniform
Monochromatic

there you have it very small and simple

While some people are content to take a screen grab in the 640x480 world of the fullscreen iTunes Visualizer, I choose this:

Set your monitor resolution to 1024x768 (this is a standard size these days)
-Open iTunes
-Start a song
-Goto 'visualizer' deselect 'fullscreen'
-Resize your iTunes window to it's Maximum size.
-then activate the visualizer.
-Press 'M' until 'Freeze current' appears.
-Use the 'q' 'w' 'a' 's' 'z' 'x' keys to choose your favorite visualizer arrangement.
-press space bar to pause.

The visualizer should come to a halt on the current setting (note: DO NOT PRESS ANY OF THE ARRANGEMENT KEYS AFTER YOU HAVE PAUSED THE MUSIC, if you do so, the current display will be lost and you will have one heck of a time getting the exact same thing back.)

Now, take a screen picture.

Open it in photoshop
-Crop an area within the visualizer that is 1024px by 768px.
(this is where you can get creative)
Choose a motion/radial Blur filter, I prefer the 'Zoom' filter, but it's up to you.
You can also adjust color/levels from here.

Now you should have a colorful, High resolution picture worthy of being used as a desktop background :)

if you want to create a straight line take your brush and use CTRL or ALT and you can do a straight line depending on the version of Photohop you're usigng

Posted by: hardmachine

This is done with Photoshop 7 in seven days. Physics is not good but still its well try by me.

Posted by: mac_mogul

Cool pic hardmachine! But any chance of you showing everyone else how to do it? :)

Posted by: hardmachine

I will tell you about this and about other stunning pics too but wait coz my senior school boards are approaching. Till then tax your mind and think about how I did it. Keep guessing. I have used just one raw image taken from my old webcam. That's why the edges of my hand are jagged. Pray wait for sometime. Thanks.

Thats is a great piece of art. The key to making a good photoshop picture is idea. The crazier the idea, the greater the picture will most likely come out to be. If you combine the right filters, you can make almost anything.

Posted by: mac_mogul

Photoshop 7 was used for this tutorial...

In light of the March Image Contest, I figure it would be appropriate to show a kind of technique to create a simulated "neons" effect on either a car, or anything else that uses neon.

First Step: You need to pick out a picture. You should deffinitely choose a picture that does not allow you to see the ground underneath the car (unless you are extrememly talented and can work around this, in that case... You probably don't even need to look at this tutorial ;) ) Your best bet would be a picture that was taken on either a cloudy day, or at dusk. This will ensure a good result.

Second Step: Create a new layer. Change the blending option to "Vivid Light" And keep the opacity at 100%.

Third Step: Activate your orignal picture layer. Now carefully select the area underneath the car that you wish to highlight. Light is a tricky thing to work with and for a more realistic look, a small amount of feathering is suggested. Also remember to select areas of the car tires, if visible, and other areas where the light might show through or on.

Fourth Step: Select your colors. Choose your base color. This should be a moderately dark color, but not too dark. Too dark and it won't show up. Now, select your second color. This should be the same base color, only choose the whitest value of this color without being too white.

Fifth Step: Activate your new layer while your selection areas are still selected. Now choose a large fuzzy brush along with your darker value color. Paint your area where the color would cover. Be careful not to get your paint too close to the edge of your selection or you will have a wierd looking edge on your light area. DO NOT DESELECT YOUR SELECTIONS!

Once this is completed, it doesn't look like much, but we're almost done.

Sixth Step: Now pick your lighter color and a smaller, not too much smaller, fuzzy brush. Paint in the edge underneath the car. It's kinda hard to specify this area without a picture, so you'll have to look at the example. Now, deselect.

Seventh Step: (If necessary) If you ended up with some sharp edges, get your blur tool and (after you have merged visible layers) blend it in where it needs to be blended.

Now you're done! If you deem any other modifications necessary, do so.

Now, step on over to the Image Contest and try out your newly aquired knowledge on the Nissan Skyline GTR! Good Luck! :D

Here are a couple of examples:

Posted by: ekĘsine

nice neon effect mac_mogul. just 2 things I'd like to point out. your outline of the front bumbper goes too far up. you can see a thin black horizontal line in the green, thats where the bumper outline should be at. on the side neon lighting, light cannot go past solid objects like the tires, your light creeps underneath the tires. just trying to help you improve your PS skills. Keep up the great tutorials man!
if you want to create a straight line take your brush and use CTRL or ALT and you can do a straight line depending on the version of Photohop you're usigng
as far as I'm aware that's shift, not ctrl or alt...it was like this in ps4, 5, 6, and CS2 those are all the ones I've ever used

Posted by: crazybeans

Nice neon effect mac but it might be easier to see what you have done if we could see the original image.

Also, the hand image with the ball and the straw or whatever it is, is great but the light rendering isn't as good as it could be. The ball is reflecting the hand at the same angel as the camera sees it and with no orbital reflection warping (if you understand what I'm trying to say). You should try fliping the reflection vertically and then using the "liquify" filter to add the warped reflection that the ball would produce. Other than that it look great.

This is a easy, cheesy way to make a sort of cool electricity effect.

*Open Photoshop and create a new document preferably wallpaper size and make sure that your documents screen resolution is set to 72.

*Fill the document with black

*Pick out a favorite color and select it in your pallete along with the color White so your color pallette should look like this "Your Color/White"

*Now pick out a fairly large, soft brush, I used a size 150 for mine, and, using your color, not white, paint some lines either up and down the screen, or across... its your choice, but don't put them close together. make sure they're separated. (follow the animation if this confuses you)

*Now press "x" on the keyboard to select your white color. Either ctl+Click(Mac) or right click with your brush to adjust the size. On the size slider bar, take the slider to about half of your current size. Then trace the inside of your colored lines with the white. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it should be smooth

*Now press "x" again and select a brush half the size of your current brush and trace inside the white with your color. Once again, it doesn't have to be perfect, just smooth

*Press "X" one more time and get a brush half the size of your current brush and paint white inside your color. Doesn't have to be perfect, just smooth.

*Now, once this is all done, go to "filter" "sketch" "chrome" and move the detail and smoothness sliders to "10" then press OK

*Now you need to fade your chrome effect. Depending on your Photoshop version, the fade menue will either be under "Filter" or "Edit" Once you have the Fade dialogue up, choose either Overlay, or Soft Light. These will give you the best results, I used Soft light, but its a personal preference. The Opacity should stay at "100"

Now you have your creation. Its infinitely customizeable with color, lines, etc... so you could just play around with it and come up with something really cool later on. :)

This is a 340kb GIF, so it might take a few seconds depending on your connection.

This seems like a good place to ask my Adobe question. Sorry I don't have a technique, but I'm trying to install Premiere Pro onto an external hard drive so I can use it on a different computer. Any ideas on how to make this work?

Posted by: J.G. Artist

thanx for the ideas people

Posted by: syringe

in Photoshop 7 and CS:

try to learn the "Action" command

go to Menu then click Windows then Action
you will find there different kinds of Image Effects, Production Effects, Text Effects and textures.

this is just one click and you have already an effects....

try it ... learn it.... and have fun

cheers

PHOTOSHOP

TIP: for making difficult selections.

if you want to make a complex selection against the sky using the magic wand, (eg tree with leaves against sky) go to channels, and view the channel that has the greatest contrast between the things you want to select, and make your selection. after, go back to normal colour mode.

brush tip:

you know that annoying (and sometimes useful) thing that happens sometimes when using any form of brush tool where the cursor does not show the size, just a little crosshair.... caps lock is the trick.

Ok let's just say that the most powerful image software that I know how to use is MS paint. Now that I can use photoshop I will like to do cooler stuff. Since I know nothing I guess something like putting my picture on a dollar bill will be a good start.

Who wants to give me a quick guide?
