Whether this has been because of severe drops in the price of memory, the ungoing war between Yahoo and Google for both Search Engine and Email domination, or a host of other things email capacity has undergone a dramatic change so that what once seemed ludicrous idea, the thought of an email account with 1GB or more has become commonplace. Here's a way to 1Gb files free via email: [url]http://www.yousendit.com/[/url] anonymous, fast, easy and free. This is bound to come in handy for something. Granted the email address you're sending it to better have 1 GB free, but still a good find. You may have noticed the abscence of the notoriously unreliable, bang your head against a wall trying to log in aventuremail free 2 GB email service. That is, because though the service still claims to be free and actually has upped its storage limit to 2-10GB email accounts it now requires a $2 activation fee to prevent abuse, ect... It still claims to be free, but as far as my definition of free email services go it doesn't fit the category anymore. I see no point in a web based email service that offers a gig of free space. at the end of the day you still have to download the content of the emails whenever you want them.... and as you say you are limited to 10meg attachments anyway. Perhaps i'm wrong here... anyone using more than 5% of their Gmail account??? Useful list anyway cheers! [/B][/QUOTE] Well actually I know at least one of these accounts is able to send 50MB attachments, and I came across another account that sent 200MB attachments, but thats besides the point. I think that you're wrong in saying that these really big email accounts don't have a point though. To me there seems one very obvious one: last ditch storage. Just in case you lose everything, you have them stored on one of these huge email accounts. For this reason the unlimited storage email accounts would be especially helpful. If would take you forever to redownload everything you lost, but at least you'd have it, and it free as opposed to other methods of backup. Seeing that most people don't bother with the other methods, this seems a good alternative. Even the long download times might not be a problem if you have a reasonably fast internet connection. I for one have tried out this method on quite a few of the aforementioned email accounts and it works fine. If you're worried about the security of your files I just encrypt them and their are ways of making numerous files be able to be sent as one file (one attachment), so the problem of sending 1000's of attachments isn't the big issue anymore. Thats just my experience though. Just for the record, on my Gmail account, I have used more then 5% of its storage, but thats because me and my friends send big attachments to each other: songs, CAD files, pictures, videos (of our own making), Flash files, and lots of other stuff. For the user who uses Gmail solely for email I can't possibly see how they could fill up near that much, perhaps in a year or two, but Gmail hasn't been out that long. For those who use Gmail solely for text email it seems kind of pointless. The interface is nice, lots of nice features but their are better email accounts out their with more features and less storage. Just one man's opinion. To me there seems one very obvious one: last ditch storage... methods of backup[/B][/QUOTE]C'mon how many people don't have a CD writer and the odd blank CD laying around?... storage YES... but in terms of backups NO One use of email storage this size is that you can email stuf to yourself so you can pick it up at work or wherever you are, however if you need any more than 100meg in my opinion you are using it as file server (which is clearly an inefficient way to use it) and perhaps you would be better off sorting yourself out some space on an ftp server... although i as i'm sure someone will point out later, these email accounts are FREE and ftp space generally is not! After reading your post ZhengHe you have changed my mind somewhat, perhaps it is because i have my own server that i can access from anywhere and so dont need to rely on a central point like gmail that i have been a bit narrow-minded. If however you dont have your own server then i can see a point to it. I would like to ask you how many of the attachments in your 5% of your gmail account you actually ever access but i know you will reply with "only a few but it's nice to know that they are there if i need to" just as if you asked me how many of the files i access on my hard drive i would say something similar. And i assume the reason you are using the over 5% is because you dont delete the emails once you have downloaded the file so that if you want to access it from another location you still can. So... [b]<my conclusion>[/b] In contradiction to my previous post which said that there was no point to vast quantities of email space i have now changed my mind (kind of), i can see that there is a point, but only because what people want (an online filestore) is not available and they are making do with what is there even if it is not the best tool for the job. I still believe that people have no need for vast quantities of email space, just a need for online space.
