Help with Build...

Ok, so far I have picked out these parts for a build,

Case: Lian Li PC-65B Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower
Mobo: ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra
GPU: BFG Tech Geforce 7800GTX OC
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo
HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA150

As you can see, I need some help choosing RAM and a power supply. For the memory I don't plan on OCing so no need for fancy stuff.

thanks in advance for any help!

I recommend you go with a PSU with a minimum of 450W. You might be able to go a little lower, but it would be risky.

For a system like that that's going to be drawing a decent amount of power, I would go with a brand name PSU.

Perhaps this one would do just fine for you. I havent used it myself but Antec is a trustworthy brand. Im sure someone will have a suggestion on a PSU that they have used.

For RAM, here's the most inexpensive 512x2 kit on newegg. This will perform no differently than expensive stuff unless you overclock, and you specified that you arent so this would be good for you.

Don't forget windows and arctic silver 5 if needed. A decent psu such as the rosewill 550watt would do for only $50 ish dollars.

See me and Elba think alike, I just ordered that PQI ram today and recommended the Neopower to a guy :D

Posted by: j4ckaL

Alright as long as that RAM will perform no different then more expensive RAM then I will get it. I will be using this rig for gaming if that makes a difference.

And I like the power supply too.

thanks!

bro make sure that you get a power supply from a trusty source. xoxide.com is pretty good. make sure you go with the ones that are 500 watts and up and check the voltages. of course your memory should be dual channel. ocz is a good brand to go with. make sure that you get the lowest latency timing as well. also presonally i like geil as a brand too

well, what do you think of the PSU and RAM that Elbatrop1 posted?

Sorry to pick your post apart:

Newegg seems to be a very trusty source. Most people here get their parts from them without problems.

When you check PSUs, the voltages are the same for any new PSU. There is no need to check into the voltages. If anything, check the current (amperage) rating on each voltage supply (rail). The Antec I recommended will be fine.

Memory itself isnt dual channel. Its the motherboard that supports dual channel, or doesnt. OCZ RAM is good but wont perform any better unless you a) get the right kind b) overclock it. Lower latency RAM doesnt perform noticeably better than regular latency RAM.

To 2nd that, I have just ordered parts from Newegg a couple weeks ago and got it 2 days after I ordered it...

And like Elba and I said, the Antec Neopower 480W is one of the best PSU's out there, and that Value RAM will not be any different than regular RAM. The CAS latency doesn't have a huge overall effect on performance.

Thanks for the help guys. I have a couple more questions though.

Will I notice a difference in performance if I get 2GB of RAM?

Of these two sound cards which one should I get:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829102162

I'll be using the card with Logitech Z-2300 2.1 speakers.

Retail version (more expensive) comes with software, and other goodies.

OEM is just the card, exansion port and a CD

Posted by: j4ckaL

What about the RAM, 1gig or 2?

Posted by: damasta55r

1Gigabyte since you don't seem to need the 2.

Roger

Posted by: Elbatrop1

My recommendations for sound is to use the onboard sound and get some Logitech X-530. I own these speakers and they are amazing. Although, the Z-series from Logitech is supposed to be ultra-good, the X-530s are really nice as well. Plus with the X-530 vs Z-2300 you get 5.1 sound instead of 2.1.

Also, 1GB is enough, as 2GB doesnt increase your performance over 1GB very much at all.

Posted by: j4ckaL

I would get a 5.1 setup but I don't have the space to set that up in my room. So I just picked what I believe is a very nice 2.1 setup.

You don't think that a sound card would increase the sound quality over onboard sound?

Posted by: Dark_Sniper*

yes it will a on-board dont get me wrong i use it too its ok. But a sound card will give you more quality in your sound then onboard ;).

Posted by: Elbatrop1

I doubt you would even notice the difference in sound quality. Boards these days are coming out with excellent onboard sound.

Dark_Sniper is right, you probably will get better quality sound, but in my opinion, the small sound quality increase isnt worth the money you spend on a sound card.

People will say that using onboard sound, video, etc takes clock cycles and RAM. They are correct, but again the difference is so minimal, its not worth it from that standpoint either, in my opinion.

Posted by: vaderpro

My onboard sound is great, i think a sound card is a waste of money...

Yea thats true the newer motherboards are starting to come with much much better quality. Then a few gens. back of mobo's but for poeple that want there 5.1 speakers to truley want to bring them bad boy speakers out it will be alot better. But for home use i would stick with onboard.

Posted by: j4ckaL

Yeah, I'd rather not buy a sound card if I won't even notice the difference. This is the mobo I'm getting, does it have real good onboard sound?

Posted by: Dark_Sniper*

yea it seems to for what you want.

Posted by: PoisonPorkchop

uhhhhh if youll notice, the oem version is 75 ish, but the retail is 90, before a 30 dollar mail in rebate. Its 15 bucks cheaper for a better deal :)

Posted by: Dark_Sniper*

its al go the retail is waht i would get you get all the drivers and stuff i think the oem version wont come with it

Posted by: j4ckaL

I don't think I will get a sound card at this point anyway.
