I will download a linux distro when i get a chance Posted by: Condraz23 Me? I'm using my good trusty Windows 98 Second Edition for this computer which is my main computer, the one I use the most. On my old laptop, I have Windows 95 installed. I've also got another computer in the house and it uses some strange sort of MS-DOS. It's not a proper computer though since it's from 1986. I've also got a few Linux distros and a copy of Windows ME too. Posted by: TheMajor You should get XP. Although 98SE is not bad at all.. Posted by: Condraz23 Windows XP is too expensive for me. I bought an OEM copy of Windows 98 Second Edition a year ago for only about $150.00. Too bad Windows XP costs more than twice as that. Anyway, I don't think I really need the new features of Windows XP yet. Posted by: Apokalipse Linux is free... Posted by: Condraz23 Still, I like Microsoft Windows 98 more than Linux. I just don't feel comfortable moving onto something new. I'd rather stick with things i'm already familiar with. I don't really have the time to start everything over again. Posted by: Apokalipse have you read "who moved my cheese?" (I'm serious) Posted by: jorsoft03 I've used every edition of Windows from 1.0 to XP, except for that pesky ME version, which I was smart enough never to mess with. Posted by: Avalanch3 im using Win XP Pro SP2 :) Posted by: Condraz23
Originally posted by jorsoft03 I've used every edition of Windows from 1.0 to XP, except for that pesky ME version, which I was smart enough never to mess with.
I've got the copy of Windows Millenium Edition. It was given to me by a friend who didn't want it since he had upgraded to Windows XP. Most people say it's a waste of money to upgrade to Windows Mellinium Edition. That's why i'm still using Windows 98 Second Edition. "Who moved my cheese"? Maybe I should amazon that. Posted by: ShadoWing gooo windows 2000 pro! Posted by: talldude123 windows 2000 Pro is the best operating system. Windows XP looks nice, but it guzzles more memory than a Chevrolet Suburban sucks gasooline. Posted by: maroon1
Originally posted by apokalipse Linux is free...
really?? , from where can i downlaod it??? :D Posted by: Condraz23
Originally posted by maroon1 really?? , from where can i downlaod it??? :D
There is no such thing as an actual Linux. You'll have to download a Linux distro. There are many distros that you can download. Go to http://distrowatch.com and choose your favourite. Then, you should be able to find the manufacturer's website and download it from there. If you want, you can get a free Linux Ubuntu CD packaged and shipped to your address here... http://shipit.ubuntu.com Posted by: eklypze
It means that it doesn't cost anything.
When they say Linux is free, they don't always mean that it is free in cost. I dual boot Windows XP Pro SP2 with Ubuntu Linux. I recommend Ubuntu to all of you who would like to give Linux a try, plus they ship free CD's. :D Posted by: Condraz23
Originally posted by eklypze When they say Linux is free, they don't always mean that it is free in cost. Most versions of Linux are free but since Linux is covered by the GNU licence, people are able to change, sell, and modify it. Anyway, my CD of Ubuntu Linux is shipping to me in about three months. I can't wait for it to come! Posted by: jdhore1 I use: WinXP, Windows Vista, Windows 2000, SuSe Linux, Mac OSx 10.4, others i can't remember... Posted by: iPod Man i use OS X, it's way better than Windows XP. I"m gonna get a new intel mac so i can put OS X and windows xp in a boot camp for all the programs that i need to run on windows. bootcamp just came out today. and i know what your saying, no windows in better. you wouldn't know because you probably haven't used it. look "Apple Mac", it's OS X and linux is spelt linux not linex or linx boot camp it you pc windozeres Posted by: TheMajor Does boot camp actually work? I mean, do all programs install and work? Posted by: jrh2008 Windows Posted by: NathanM I didn't get to vote, but I'm using Windows XP Home SP2. I'd like to learn more about Linux, but I just don't have the time or motivation. Posted by: Steven_2006 Windows XP Home (SP2) Posted by: Seria
Originally posted by TheMajor You should get XP. Although 98SE is not bad at all..
I had 98SE. I loved it. but I built a new computer and win98 wouldn't work because it was too old for the new hardware.. so I moved up to WinXPpro its nice... but a lot of freedoms have been taken away that where every-day abilities in 98. Posted by: talldude123 I just installed Windows Vista Beta2 last night on my Celeron....big mistake. There were no drivers for it. It was sluggish, even on "performance" mode. I know that XP is kinda slow, but at least i can experience XP's beautiful appearance on a Celeron... Posted by: thebleakness I use WinXP right now but im considering not selling my old celeron comp and getting a linux distro on it and messing with that. I have always wanted to try it but felt apprehension. Posted by: talldude123 Celeron's are great for Linux. I used an older 500Mhz Seanix with Red Hat 9, very fast, even though it had only 64MB RAM. My current system ran Red Hat even faster, i dont keep Linux installed however, due to drivers. Dont sell a Celeron, its worth more to keep than sell! Posted by: thebleakness I was going to sell it in-house. My parents need a new comp because their old PII isnt cutting it anymore. They dont want to venture out into linux territory though. :( I was thinking of mandriva but i heard it was a resouce hog. Its a 2.1ghz celeron with 1gb of valueram. Would that be sufficent to support it? Posted by: talldude123 I searched Google, and i found a page stating that you need a 500Mhz P3, 256MB RAM, 1GB HD, and 32-bit graphics to make it run smoothly. Your celeron would be a rocket on it. Bill Gates would even be suprised. Posted by: thebleakness Thats good too hear. Part of the reason i havent sold it already is that ive been putting off buying a new hdd for it. My old 40gb hdd has a bad sector and is unable to start windows due to an error. Its quite annoying... Posted by: MrCoffee
Originally posted by TheMajor You should get XP. Although 98SE is not bad at all..
you forgot sarcasm tags. Anyway I use XP home, XP Pro, Win98se and DOS 6.22, I also have a copy of Linux which loads purely off a CD. ONe of my computers triple boots but the others just have 1 OS. Posted by: weemanpow3 windows all the way vBulletin Copyright ©2000 - 2003, Jelsoft Enterprises Limited.
