Man charged with stealing Wi-Fi signal

Benjamin Smith III, 41, faces a pretrial hearing this month following his April arrest on charges of unauthorized access to a computer network, a third-degree felony.

Police say Smith admitted using the Wi-Fi signal from the home of Richard Dinon, who had noticed Smith sitting in an SUV outside Dinon's house using a laptop computer.

The practice is so new that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement doesn't even keep statistics, according to the St. Petersburg Times, which reported Smith's arrest this week.

Innocuous use of other people's unsecured Wi-Fi networks is common. But experts say that illegal use often goes undetected, such as people sneaking on others' networks to traffic in child pornography, steal credit card information and send death threats.

Security experts say people can prevent such access by turning on encryption or requiring passwords, but few bother or even know how to do so.

Wi-Fi, short for Wireless Fidelity, has enjoyed prolific growth since 2000. Millions of households have set up wireless home networks that allow people to use the Web from their backyards but also reach the house next door or down the street.

Prosecutors declined to comment, and a working phone number could not be located for Smith.

Yeah I saw that on the news. If I saw a guy doing that, I would have grabbed the baseball bat and payed his makeshift living area a run-down.

Too funny and too true!!

If i was doing it, you would not see me!!!! :p

I got a handheld bidirectional antenna with a 12db gain.
What does this mean????

I can pwn your wireless network. Simple as that.

****, I'm lucky I don't have wireless. Not because of you Uzi, but just because of these idiots that steal people's wi fi signal.

I ran into a free connection like this two days ago while testing wireless equipment in my frined's new office. Just turned on a machine and it connected to a wireless DSL router. Got IP and gateway assigned and Internet access so no ecryption and DHCP on the router was enabled. Haven't figured out who the owner was but must have been close as I got 54Mb connection. My friend office is on the ground floor next to the street. With that signal strength, anyone on the street could have free access.

same here, I was working on my cousin's laptop and fixing it for her before she goes to college, had a 400 mbps wireless card installed and i was getting some signals from somewhere, not sure where, wasnt getting any internet access so must've been protected or something.

Crap, if I ever got Wi Fi I would protect that thing up the a*s. So no one could pick up my signal.

(a video i made)

Posted by: Warez Monster

U made that video?

Posted by: uzi9mm

Yes I made the video.

But if you are trying to pin me with a crime, just FYI, I never did anything illegal. I just did a wireless survey around where I live. And that network I connected to was my own. I portrayed it as someone elses network.

And I did not do the wardriving myself. I was just the camera guy.

People drive fast where you live lol

Good vid though, people should learn to encrypt there networks. Its not hard to do.

I've got a wireless network too, (not many people do here yet) and have it unsecured. Using WEP would slow the network down quite a bit and using the pre-shared key would make my router for some reason crash. i've secured it in a different way though. i check logs for mac-adresses/pc-names i dont know. only one intrusion, while i was home, dont think i'll be seeing him again. went out in the front yard with one of my swords. a few minutes later i went back in and the culprit seemed to have disapeared.

Just because you had an unknown PC logged, does not mean he was parked outside using your network..... He could of been driving by doing like 40 mph and his netstumbler did a touch and go on yours.

Anyways if he really wanted to get into your network i think he would of have done it at a remote location. With the proper equipment, you can wireless connect almost 2,000 feet away.

why do people don't put password in their computer?

Posted by: uzi9mm

It is not just a password. It is a very long string of random characters. Each computer needs to have that exact random string of characters. Some people just do not know how to do it, and others are just too lazy. And some people think that their network will never be attacked.
