Introductory Guide to Watercooling (Updated 6/28/05)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Nubius

There's only a couple people here who know fairly well what goes into a water cooling setup. I thought that we needed a nice indepth guide to water cooling and have it a sticky along with the Overclocking guide.

No I'm not writing one myself :D

Please go to the link(s) below regarding any and every water cooling question you may have. It is very thorough and well written.

International Online Watercooling Retailers

A Special thanks to MaxxxRacer of Xtremesystems for writing the above content.

Modifying a Heatercore

Note: Although that guide specifies a 1986 Chevette heatercore, a 1977 Pontiac Bonneville or 1976 Chevy Caprice/Impala works better

Thanks.

Posted by: Nubius

Woohoo, I didn't realize DMo had infact made it a sticky. Thanks DMo....assuming you see this lol

Posted by: GrimReaper23

Nice Guide here also thatnk you for making it a sticky.

Posted by: zap

thanks

Posted by: pc_boy

that's nice, i had some qustions too, i wanna get water cooling on my next system....

Posted by: majistic

Woo nice, now I just need to read it and not browse over it.

Posted by: Him

Here is a nice little guide over at XS for some good websites that sell water cooling gear. It's a nice little list.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=67179

Posted by: Him

Here is a little guide that is an update to Nubius' water cooling guide. This also covers leak testing, and will be covering coolant in due time. Coolant is certainly one thing that is overlooked by nearly everyone who watercools.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=54331

Posted by: Trifid

That was a long weekends worth of work. I think I will need to read it on the weekend.

Posted by: gaara

The thread is still in the same location and the thread ID has not changed for the guide so this really wasn't neccesary, however, I will merge the two threads and note the update.

One should also take note of this thread for an indepth comparison and recommendation of both AC and DC pumps.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=41495

Posted by: Him

Gaara, should make the one about the pumps a sticky. That way, when the advanced section comes along, we can move those threads into the water cooling section.

Posted by: gaara

I would prefer to keep everything condensed for the time being so the forums does not get cluttered, when we have a forum specifically for water cooling then I'll make some changes.

I also wouldn't mind having some original content rather than leeching off everyone else. :p

Posted by: Him

Well, here is the thing about original content... Look at what we have for guides at TF... Next to none. Judging from that, do you think we actually have someone who could correctly right an in depth article or guide on something? I think not. Nubius couldnt even write his own, he had to get it from elsewhere. For the time being, we will have to settle with leeching someone elses work.

Posted by: gaara

I added the procedure for modding a heatercore to the list.

anyone know about cooling a dual core X2 processor because most cpu cooling blocks have the copper heatsink in the center and in a dual core processor the cores are side-by-side

Posted by: Him

Waterblocks have one big chunk of copper to cover the entire chip, the whoole thing. They are optimized though for cooling in the dead center of the block. If you'll notcie on the good ones (such as the Dangerden TDX), the spray of new cold water comes into the block right onto this little group of copper pins that are right above where the core should be. Maybe if you did some research you could find a special dual core block. Go over to www.xtremesystems.org they may have some more info for you on that front.

Why is water cooling needed, why not just use a powerfull fan?

Posted by: Him

Because you wont get nearly as cool with a fan as you would with water cooling.

Posted by: GuitarFreak1857

yeah hes right, durring a benchmark a CPU can rise to extreme temps but with water cooling it only rises a few degrees.

Posted by: PZEROFGH

and the noise

Posted by: Him

No, not really the noise if you have a good system going on. I have these massive fans that, even conntected to a fan controller, are hella loud. But there are crappy water cooling systems that are nice and quiet, but if you are hardcore water cooling, that thing isnt going to be quiet... But it will perform like a *******!

Posted by: Nubius

yup, my two fans for my heatercore are 130CFM....those are pretty loud at full blast...I keep them at halfway and even then it's quite audible

Posted by: Him

Yeah, I keep my big (not sure how big it is, I think it's around 120cfm though) down all the way and it is still pretty lound.. And thats only one. I have another one that is not yet hooked up, and I am not looking forward to the airplane like noise that thing is going to make.

Posted by: Nubius

the friend who got me into water cooling has that big cube case....forget how many fans it houses like...6 120mm fans or something, everysingle one he has is the 130CFM I've got...gold mine electronics had a box of like 18 of these fans for $25, unfortunately I don't see them having that sale on there anymore as I just checked the other day.

Needless to say his is never turned up full blast

Posted by: Him

Those are the fans I got. I found them on cooltechnica.com for $15 a peice. I found electronics goldmine, and foudn the EXACT same ones for $1.50... So I got two.... For 10X less than what they were on computer websites. I loved it, but that sucks they dont have that sale anymore. I was goping to buy two cases and sell the fans for $5 a peice, but nobody was interested, and my credit card didnt process right (god knows why) so I never go thtme, which was good.

hope the 300's core is ok...

Cnet has a video on how to install it

Posted by: PW_Ranger

Watercooling???? IS it a cooler for the processor?? use to replace the cooling fan??? If really it is, it a waste of money to buy it..I think!...does it really lower the temperture of the processor???Than a cooling fan?? Pls tell mi cuz i wanted to know more about this

Posted by: Trifid

Yes, yes it does. And it is quieter for the cooling performance you get out of it.
