Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) will be capable of massive storage, as well as transfer rates of up to 1 GB per second. Optware’s announced came less than a week after a similar announcement from InPhase Technologies. InPhase recently began shipping its GDS5000 HVD drives based on WORM (Write Once Read Many) technology. A newer version, the Tapestry HDS-200R will be a fully recordable 200GB drive with 20MB per second transfer – it is expected to hit markets later this year. The advantage of using HVD style media is that, unlike optical discs like DVD and CD, HVD can read or write 10KB of data in parallel (optical data requires this to be done bit by bit). In addition, because data isn’t being read sequentially, there is no need for the disc to spin. In addition to increased storage capacity, potential benefits include reducing costs of storage by radically increased density and easier management. Brian Babinea, an analyst at Enterprise Strategy group, said the solution could solve the current disc space to floor volume issues enterprises are running into. "Right now, all business continuity plans include some sort of off-site storage, and the density and mobility of HVD media can make it more cost-effective to send data offsite," he said. But until these products actually hit the market, it's all speculation, he said. "HVD offers tremendous amounts of capacity, but they need to prove that the data can be accessed quickly without any quality degradation. Until then, it's a science project," he said. Optware and InPhase, as well as contenders Aprilis Inc. of Maynard, Mass. and Colossal Storage Corp. of San Jose, Calif., are doing their best to get HVD-based products to market and prove skeptics wrong. Both InPhase and Optware plan to have products available this year and to introduce more over the next several years. by Jeremy C. Wright
Wow, that's going to be so cool! I wonder how much they'll charge for it and if the costs of smaller capacity hard drives will go way down. I have only 40GB of those things you call "movies". -Dan The Man Posted by: GrimReaper23 those things lol Posted by: vikeman21 NEWEGG's got a 1TB Posted by: Cubic_Circuit
Originally posted by vikeman21 NEWEGG's got a 1TB
Really? Dude! Link! All I can find are 500GB drives. =( HVD looks neat, I read about it in Scientific American like 4 years ago as a hypothetical possibility, and though "Oh, that's neat, I wonder if they'll ever do it...", and then I promptly forgot all about it. -CC Posted by: SHAWN I love to download and watch "movies" :D. Posted by: Tyler1989 http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/research/recording_head/pr/PerpendicularAnimation.html enough said Posted by: Apokalipse wouldn't they bump into each other if they flip around? Posted by: Cubic_Circuit Holy crap, that's the best video EVER. Posted by: maroon1 who will need 1TB i have 120GB HDD, and i am using about 25% of it Posted by: Apokalipse you'd be surprised how much some people can fill Posted by: Cubic_Circuit I have a rig with 3 160GB drives and an 8GB system drive. The system drive is 1/2 full, and the 160GBs are at 40-60% each. And I plan to fill them completely, get a RAID 5 card, and have a bank of 360GBs, or something...=P Posted by: smurph I download movies/music and have had store ~200GB onto DVD in the past year. Although there are new larger harddrives, it would take no time to have these filled. Internet downloading speeds, and movie filesizes are all increasing, so we will soon require hard drives of much greater proportions..........I feel that the advancement of hard drive technology has fallen way behind internet speeds etc. Comments please......... Any other ideas for file storage?? Posted by: Cubic_Circuit Acctually, if internet connection speeds get high enough, it may become the fashion to store everything remotely, in massive central databases, and get at everything over our terrabit connections. Wouldn't THAT be neat? Then, in theory , you wouldn't need to have huge local data drives, you could just store everything remotely. Posted by: Apokalipse well I'd rather store things in my own computer. Posted by: smurph I would prefer to store my stuff on my own PC too. Especially preferring not to have to pay, which is highly likely in the event of this remote storage idea, a third party periodically to store it for me. Posted by: Apokalipse and there's also the chance other people might be able to access it (and put on viruses, spyware and other crap) Posted by: Cubic_Circuit Well basically what I'm refering to is the idea that, say, you like to listen to music. And you have something like iTunes, and you've paid for a crapload of it. You don't have to store it all locally, because with Internet speeds that are fast enough, you could instantaniously download whatever song you click on. Posted by: Tyler1989
Originally posted by apokalipse and there's also the chance other people might be able to access it (and put on viruses, spyware and other crap)
And they can't do that on your PC? Posted by: Condraz23 1TB? I'm still stuck with my old 20GB hard drive. But it's only half-filled so I guess i'm still alright. I reckon 1TB hard drives are still about three to five years off from now, even though you can buy an external one that has the same capacity already. Posted by: TheMajor I just bought 300GB and a 160GB disk about 1 month ago. In total I have 580GB now, and it's getting used very rapidly. I guess I will need more space in late 2006. Posted by: smurph Yeah, it doesn't take long to use it up.....I haven't forked out for new HDDs. Does the industry not realise it needs to move on.....especially as people will be keeping DVD movies, music, recorded TV (be it sport, films, etc) on their hard drives, which is my preference to lots of media. I know they are releasing HD machines for TVs, but us techies will prefer it on our PCs, and will be able to send it to our TVs (even though I haven't done this yet, but know it can be done), thus eliminating the need for the new expensive HD machine. Does that make sense? Posted by: talldude123 1 TB disks? the only place i have seen anything close to that, is dell offering 2 500GB HD's, which totalls out to 1TB. Posted by: cobalt817 well, imagine smaller high density disks, they don't have to be a TB. they can be cheaper, and will have an impact on the portable PCs more than anything. with 64 bit in the future, programs will become larger and the new disks will be nice. personally,I think they should do away with the hard disk, and go to another technology such as a large capacity flash memory module. something like this would have almost instant access times. Posted by: talldude123 1 TB disks are now on sale! At Future Shop (best buy clone), they have a LaCie 1 TB external hard drive. Its $999...
Here we are in 2006 and we still use tapes. For the love of God I don't understand why. They have a somewhat high failure rate and are massively expensive. So if we're strill using tapes to back stuff up, the hard drive will be around just as long.
Don't forget those wonderfull floppys. Tapes and floppys are old technology that should die. I sent a e-mail to Microsoft telling them that Vista should be a floppyless system, and they replied! They said my request was a reasonable one and would be forwarded to the proper channels! I just hope they actually do something. One thing we got to remember, tapes(not tape drives) and floppys are dirt cheap, and money runs this industry. Posted by: Potato i have a 500gb drive that im filling up nicely. this should come in handy. Posted by: Solitary i only have 6gb of "movies". i really do not have the need for them. but i have much more films and music videos and music itself. i have 85% of my 160gb HD used. Posted by: talldude123 speaking of 1TB disks, while watching Pimp my Ride on MTV, i noticed that this lucky (insert language here) got a nice laptop, with an external KB/mouse/24" LCD monitor. And it had 4 500GB external hard drives....that really makes me envious... Posted by: weemanpow3 wow ill go broke buying one Posted by: Harper
Originally posted by maroon1 who will need 1TB
Ummmmm...... Nubius. I see him filling one of those up in no time. I currently got about 640Gb worth of storage, however I have only used up half of that. Mind you, I just need to find some time to burn alot of that off to DVD.
