Scientists in the US have developed a system called Fast TCP that promises to be 6,000 times faster than today's broadband links. A key feature of Fast TCP is that it could run on the normal Internet infrastructure. The new system was developed by Steven Low and a team at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena. New Scientist magazine said Low compared the way the internet works now to driving a car while looking only 10 metres ahead. "This is OK for driving slowly in a parking lot," he said. On the open road it was necessary to look further." The first practical test of Fast TCP sent data 10,000 kilometres from Sunnyvale, California, to the CERN particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The average transmission rate was 925 megabits per second, compared with 266 megabits for ordinary TCP. "By ganging 10 Fast TCP systems together, the researchers have achieved transmission speeds of over 8.6 gigabits per second, which is more than 6,000 times the capacity of ordinary broadband links," said New Scientist. Caltech is said to be in talks with Microsoft and Disney about using Fast TCP for video on demand. Start saving up folks! Posted by: Don Fudleone Wicked! Technology nowadays.... Don Fudleone Posted by: Ecniv I read about this one awhile back. Funny that they dont tell you what medium it was traveling on. Posted by: NeoSofT This is me it's good to hear something like that maybe oneday you can download full movie just when you clicking the download link ... without 5 seconds with .0000005 seconds :) Thank You Posted by: Quantum Mmmm piracy. Posted by: jeece Downloading a movie faster than the hard drive can write it! :amazed: WOAH! Posted by: ekĘsine no jeece. even if you could download it that fast your hard disk would never keep up. the fastest hard disk would never keep up. also you need to be aware when they say "whole movies" they are most likely talking about rips, a movie re-encoded using Divx, MPEG4, or some other compression. a whole DVD movie is about 8GB, impossible to download in 5 seconds. only a freak with a masive SCSI RAID0 setup could even hope to come that close. Posted by: jeece
Originally posted by ekĘsine no jeece. even if you could download it that fast your hard disk would never keep up. the fastest hard disk would never keep up. [...]
That's what I meant. :o Posted by: ekĘsine Placebo why does it say this thread was started by Anubis? just thought of something, placebo that "925 megabits" is not fast enough to download any movie, even a 1GB compressed movie. what they meant by download a movie in 5 seconds is just buffering. it is impossible to download a movie in 5 seconds. they movie is being buffered and streamed while watching. Posted by: 2Crunk sounds cool to me, alot beter than waiting for 2 hours with DSL Posted by: Demalii wouldn't the wiring like.. bust lol Posted by: CableModem That's impressive considering a current connection takes hours. :wooha: :wooha: :wooha: But think of the copyright issues, it'd be worse than music. Posted by: mdshort
Originally posted by Demalii wouldn't the wiring like.. bust lol
No but depending on the medium, it could melt. :P P.S.: The only reasonable medium It could possibly be transferred on is Fiber Optic. Today reaching speeds of 10,000gbps. I'm glad the internet is finally catching up, I'd rather be limited to the medium I'm using and not the service. Posted by: bobojuice So are we all gonna have Fiber Optic running straight to our comps one day?? Posted by: mdshort Some cities ARE setting up Fiber Optics to local neighborhoods etc, but this costs alot of money and alot of cities don't see it as a neccesity. It will take AT THE LEAST 10-20 years for wide scale availability to finally be completed. (I'm sure by that time they'll have some other type of transfer medium. And the internet will still seem slow and users are most likely going to demand more, as new programs take advantage of excessive Fiber Optic speeds.) Posted by: bobojuice Screw that, i cant wait. Im gonna set up an ATM to my house right now!! Posted by: SlySniper Well, well, well, I REALLY hope that this new technology could help decrease the amount of money for DSL/Cable, beaucse where I live, I don't want to pay $30 a month for DSL/Cable. Posted by: beedubaya I would pay $100 per month if it were available to me. I just don't want to go satellite (i've heard nothing but bad about it.) Posted by: BoobieSrUs id do it! Posted by: beedubaya
Originally posted by BoobieSrUs id do it!
I have cable now w00t! However, no you don't want Direcway. Cory has probably told you how bad it is unless you get the government edition. The consumer edition is $100 per month after a $600 installation, and they cap you at 168MB per day. And your speeds average between 128kbps and 384kbps. And did I tell you there is a $300 cancellation fee? Satellite is nothing but a complete fraud as it is now. vBulletin Copyright ©2000 - 2003, Jelsoft Enterprises Limited. PPC Management vB Easy Archive Final - Created by Xenon |
