Heres the deal i installed Suse 9.1 on a slave hard drive and it was working fine until tonight when the hard drive started making a scratching noise and short beeps. Then suddenly Linux just freeze so i reboot and boot into Windows Xp and have no problems with beeping or anything (XP is on primary hard drive) i was looking around forums trying to find a solution and i thought i had one then i tried to boot back into linux but it froze at the POST!!! Bios says it cant find either hard drive now! So i took the secondary HDD out and started computer. Bios says it found my primary again but only boots as far as a black screen simarly to the command line saying (GRUB) it wont let me do anything from there how do i get past it or fix this problem! Posted by: uchiha hmm could be your IDE controller went haywire. I might not even be close. No reason for two drives to suddenly fail. Have you always used two drives? sometimes the motherboard takes strange configurations. For example, I have to flip my IDE cables so the slave goes to IDE0, system goes to master drive, and master goes to slave drive when using two drives. When I want to use one, I have to reflip it and then i have to take all the pins out. This was because I damaged the IDE controller... again, I might not even be close. could be that one or more pieces of your hardware has finally given up. Posted by: charles@pcfix At the comand line type: FDISK /MBR You may need to boot with a floppy to run FDISK Posted by: NIN Don't quote me on this but grub stage 1 is on the mbr. the function of stage 1 is to point to the location of grub stage 2 on the slave hard drive at /boot/grub I believe. If your hard drive died this is why stage 2 will not boot. In this case it did post and loaded stage 1 but stage 2 is missing becuase of a fried disk. Boot into windows buy fixing the mbr like charles said or reinstall windows. Then check if the slave drive shows up in disk management. vBulletin Copyright ©2000 - 2003, Jelsoft Enterprises Limited.
