Just enough so you can pull the apart. Posted by: jaksback Step 2: Do that for all of the wiring on the IDE Cable until it looks like the included picture. Posted by: jaksback Step 3: (Last One) Once you are done seperating all of the cables, simply tie them up to form a rounded cable. You can use cable ties, or black electrical tape, its up to you. It isn't the pretiest thing in the world but it will definitely improve your air flow until you can save enough money to get all of the fancy new rounded cables. Posted by: brianm8000 oh yea, forgot to ask. I was looking on Ebay and i dont know what will fit. There are definitions suck as: ATA 133 ATA 133 100 66 ROUND IDE ATA 100/133 UDMA/133 IDE What will fit my CD-RW/DVD-RW and my floppy drive? Posted by: Nubius
ATA 133 ATA 133 100 66 ROUND IDE ATA 100/133
Those are almost exactly the same. Those are all IDE cables which will fit on your CD-RW and whatnot....but the difference is in the speeds...133 means 133mb/sec but you'd need to find out if your drives are ata100 or ata133... Of course the one that says 100/133 means it handles both speeds, and the other one that goes down to 66 handle all those speeds. Just go with ATA 133/100/66 Round IDE Jak: That's the really long and difficult way to make round cables.. All you really gotta do is fold the cable in half a couple times and it comes out the same way. You can BARELY make out my round cable in this pic: It's to the right of the CPU and RAM, and you can see it going up and it's pretty clear between the HD and the CD-Rom....just look for the CD-ROM and follow it's cable, but yeah you can see it there. I just folded it 2 or 3 times over and it comes out no thicker than a regular bought round cable. Much quicker and easier than trying to slice each cable IMO :D Posted by: GeckoEcho421 Wow, sorry but I just have to laugh at your computer. Although it probobly does run really cool. Posted by: TheMajor JAK!! this rocks.. I will try this tonight!!!!!!! THANKS for this guide!!! BTW.. IDE cables do not come in speeds. Its either a 40conductor cable or an 80conductor cable. You need 80 for UDMA66 speeds or higher. Posted by: uchiha oh man....this tut rocks... a tip for if you are actually going to do it... when separating the individual cable, you dont have to cut all the way through. Just make a small incision, and you can pull it apart. be careful not to cut into the cabling. Posted by: lazerman There is an easier and safer alternative, you fold the cables... I'll find the post and edit this one in a sec. Posted by: lazerman Gah well I can't find it.. anyways you fold your cable in half horizontally (if the cable is sideways) and then fold the outsides back so there is in turn 3 folds. Then zip tie or rubber band them together. It may seem imposible but just do the sections, don't try to bend the connectors lol. Posted by: Nubius
Wow, sorry but I just have to laugh at your computer. Although it probobly does run really cool.
lol yeah, it also has much lower temps with a higher clock than yours even though it's an XP-Mobile and you've got an AMD64 ;) I've got 11 case fans, the cpu fan there, of course 2 in the PSU, a fan controller to control them all, a CD-RW, DVD-ROM, two hard drives, one on SATA port even though it's not a SATA Drive... Sooo with all that wiring if you think you could make it neater within a mid-tower case then feel free to stop by sometime and organize it for me because as it is it was a pain in the *** just to make sure no wires crossed the motherboard for better airflow. That's also how I have my cable done and you can barely see it in that pic up there EDIT: Here's a better pic Gecko Trust me...not only does it run cool, but I had fun modding it out with my friend. Plus it runs really well since I have it overclocked. Hopefully this christmas I can get some high performance RAM 1gb kit and then I'll really be smokin. I can't afford a 6800GT though so I'll probably have to go with 6600GT Posted by: lazerman Exactly... Must have missed that. I think it is alot less risky then anything involving a knife. There used to be a good tutorial on it like a few months ago on a different site. I spent a good hour looking for it and came up empty handed :(. Posted by: Nubius
I think it is alot less risky then anything involving a knife.
Yeah that's precisely why I just folded them. They can be folded in have 2 or 3 times to get it pretty small. I'm too impatient to do something as tedious as carefully cut inbetween all those wires when folding it works out the same way....except I guess those are FLAT cables instead of ROUND huh? :p Posted by: Shumway Just don't have a drink or two when trying to do this:D I wrecked 2 cable's trying to do it half drunk:p after my little screw up's i decided just to buy the stupid round cable's.
That is funny as ****... Yea I guess it is sorta flat.. Still allows for better air flow though. Posted by: OIDanTheManIO Great tutorial! And let me tell you, if I didn't already have round IDE cables, I would give this one a shot ;) -Dan The Man Posted by: Shumway If you want to do it the way Jak is showing it would be best to make a cut about every 4th or 5th wire, and if you want to give it a little bit of color just wrap it in colored electrical tape,They sell the different color tape at just about every hardware store you can find. Posted by: Demalii I agree with shumway, btw, wasn't a tutorial on this posted not to long ago? Posted by: jaksback i don't recall, but it was presented to me by Holocron in an old thread of mine a long long time ago. btw, I had posted diff alternatives in how to cut in the other thread of same content in the tutorial forum: http://www.tech-heaven.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=35567 glad ya'll like it and its good to have input like above on the diff ways of doing it. I have used the folding alternative but it just doesn't "feel" as nice as the stranded out one. Also you can get UV sensative tape/wrap that really looks sharp if you have a cold cathode like mine.....i love the pretty colors......:D :o Posted by: Nubius
Just don't have a drink or two when trying to do this I wrecked 2 cable's trying to do it half drunk after my little screw up's i decided just to buy the stupid round cable's.
lol I can barely do steady work when I'm sober much less if I were to get drunk Posted by: Shumway
Originally posted by Nubius lol I can barely do steady work when I'm sober much less if I were to get drunk
The worst part about that is i done it on a long weekend, and my ol'lady was severely ****ed cause she couldn't get on to play bingo till Tuesday when the comp store opened up:D So remember children drinking and computer's don't mix:p Posted by: throk5 an easier way to make round cables... (as said) u fold the cables into quarters (the long way lol) and use some cable sheething of sort and zip ties!! much happier cables than hacking them with a sharp knife and u get to choose ur color!!!! would have pic but cam on the fritz time to get a new 1 Posted by: sniper234 i would a sleaving kit after i tied the cables up like UV blue or green:D Posted by: Harper
Originally posted by jaksback Step 2: Do that for all of the wiring on the IDE Cable until it looks like the included picture.
I might not strip every thing down to the every single calbe, but I have done this with some of the systems that I have built.
