I kept making the screen colours go weird with magnets but forgot that my monitor didnt have a deguass button, so my monitor is all screwed up now.

Posted by: Erstad

LOL!! That's pretty stupid!!

I installed Windows ME one time... that was really dumb!!

Posted by: Powahslave

My friend took a magnet to my mom's monitor once... It was hilarious, he was desgaussing the thing for like half an hour.

Posted by: jaun1477

a friend wanted to make is computer look "cool" so he cut a 12" circle and use a plastic bag with a flashing ligth (disco type) inside  it was wierd with the extra 110 w cable feed tru the back but he was pleased until the bulb (40 w) flashing john travota ligth mess up his computer cuz of the heat

the sad part is he is still trying to do the same in another computer with 12 v yellow road warning ligth !!!!!!

i kicked a computer so hard once that i broke the hard-drive!

another time i shorted out the motherboard (i was replacing it anyway) to see what would happen!... it was smoking!

Posted by: ADZ

I was running a P1 166 and i lit fireworks into it (whilst it was on)

The thing lives to tell the tale today.

Posted by: Mr.Modman

I found a computer on a sidewalk after it rained and plugged it in. The firealarm in the house went of and the firefighters came. My room smelled so bad. howeve the computer was only on fire for about 7 seconds!

Posted by: Erstad

These stories are killing me!!! LOL First the fireworks one and now the fire alarm story.

Too funny!!

A few years ago, when I still shared a computer with my brother, I wanted to install Mandrake Linux 7. I took the hard drive from the ancient 3.1 machine (75 MHz Pentium Original!). When this drive was in, the BIOS would not see the other one whether it was Master, Slave, or Cable Select. I decide that I'll just deal with it the way it is, and try and get both drives to function together later. I reformat the drive...MISTAKE! Because the BIOS didn't know there were two drives on the IDE channel, it must have sent the signal through the whole cable, instead of specifying the signals to one drive. The machine's main drive...reformatted...all data lost...gone forever. You can imagine he was not very pleased with me...

Recently, I dropped a metal paperclip into an open case...it shorted the sound card before I realized I had even dropped it.

I hate Dell. One day at school when those "Dell built tough" commercials were popular and always on, i decided to push my Dell off the desk. Its not like the commercials where it bounced and was fine. A big plume of black smoke come out of the psu and it started creaking... it was a bit scary. but funny because it shows how much Dells suck.

Back when I first started becoming interested in computers, I decided to upgrade my video card. My friend had an old AGP video card that he gave to (can't remeber the model). I had a hard time getting the card to fit into the slot so I got frustrated and hammered it in with my screwdriver. When I tured on the computer, the new card worked fine.

Posted by: Martin

I accidentally plugged a flat cable into a VGA feature connector (from the DVD decoder board) backwards - the cable caught fire, but the system video card, and decoder survived, after an immediate shutdown.

Posted by: Martin

Not me but it is someone whom I have great respect for.

But the question what, were you excited and looking forward installing Windows Me at the time.....? :o

My claim to fame is this. When I was living with my parents, it was winter.
In my bedroom, I have the following :-
* My computer system
* Big HiFI System (which I was using a my PC speakers too)
* Video Player
* DVD Player
* 68cm TV
* HP LaserJet 4M Printer
* 1x Electric Bar Heat

Anyways, here I am using the computer wit hthe HiFi System as my PC Speakers. I am watching DVDs on the 68 CM TV. And it's cold, so I have this bar heat running.
All i did was send a 1 page print job down to the printer. The HP laser Jet starts to warm up and i black out the house.

I did that about 3 times that night before realising that my computer study does not like having all that gear getting powered off just 2 power sockets.

After that, I made sure I turn off the heater before printing.

After my parents bought a comp with Win95 i really started to like them. So theres one day after breakfast i turn on the computer and i decide to use the cd drive as a cupholder. Well, the computer didnt like that much and after that it didnt read any Cd.

Not sure about stupid, but it was a classic example of wasting technology.

Flatmate hook up his gameboy advance to as set of Altec Langsing 5.1 speakers system. He wanted to play Golden Sun a surround sound enviroment.

Personally, i thought it was pretty sad.

I stole all the case screws from the backs of the computers in our library cuz they suck so bad...just wait till someone picks up the tower :P

Posted by: BlindApex

OOOOO and all the "Intel Celeron" case badges lol...and they're showing that off?

Posted by: Zabador

when i was 8 i decorated our brand new 286 with fridge magnets cuz i didnt like yellow. we sent it back to the manufactuer under the guise of "it came that way"

This summer I tried to replace my Heatsink and fan on my processor. Unfortunately, when i got the heatsink off, the processor came off with it. I tried to put it back on, and bent the pins. Guess what that led to..

After that, I've not tried to screw around with anything that is intricate.

I also tore apart a Mac PowerBook G3, because someone dropped it with the power cord in. This led to breaking the power hookup.

It worked when i started, but not after i took all the screws out.

Removing the Fan and CPU at the same time as been some thing I have accidently done a few times myself.

How ever, I did have this one customer that tried to remove his CPU from the motherboard....... with a flat head screw driver. :amazed:

Posted by: Harper

I few that are not really stupid, but they are case of OH&S, that I have done.

I was going industry experence for a come of the distributors. For about 4 weeks staight i was repairing power supplies. About about 40 hours of this, your brain does begin to wonder. And you do begin to get tired.
So I was not paying attension, i put a soldering iron into a live (was not turned on, but was connected to mains) power supply.
Since I was on an chair with wheels on it, the shock threw me back about 15 meters.

The guy in repairs heard me yell and the noticed that I was suddenly gone.

The guy in the RMA department thought it was funny seeing me speed through his room on an wheely chair.

The guy in the service daptment thought it was rather funny that the chair suddenly stop as it hit network cable on the floor ; spilling my body onto the floor.

They only thing I remember was waking up in hospital 4 hours later feeling like some thing just kicked me in the guts

And people wonder why I refuse to repair PSUs.

before i knew anything about computers, i would just delete stuff instead of going through the UNINSTALL process. Really stupid.

I put an ecs mobo in my pc once,, that was pretty stupid

I had the exact same thing happen to my laptop, but I found someone who was selling the exact part I needed on ebay, so I bought it (for $8), stripped apart the laptop, soldered the new part to the motherboard and it works great. It only took about an hour, and cost a whole lot less than sending it to the manufacturer.:D

Posted by: ImAnAardvark

Well this wasn't stupid, but it was fun.
One time my father (when I was still living with my parents) made the mistake of buying a custom built PC from a no-name company online. (if it were anybody else, I would say that part was stupid, but I know my father did it because he didn't know any better, and he is too trusting of people.) Needless to say, the thing had more compatability issues than a man hitting on a lesbian. Finally, he got a new computer (from a reputable source), and we took the other PC outside, placed it about 300 meters away in a field, and put about 200 rounds through it (.30-06 and 30-30). After the case finally got knocked off the frame, we were able to see parts just exploding out of the computer with every shot. It was very satisfying, and might I say, even therapeutic.

I am quite sure that we ALL have done the Fdisk command, and then forgetting that there was still some data on the drive.

I have done that one once :-
I was doing one of my routine OS rebuilds.
ME (Thinking) :- Ok, that is Win Amp installed. Now where are my MP3s folder...
ME (Outloud) :- FFFFFFFFFFF**K!
ME (Thinking) :- Oh well, my Win 98 is not the only thing i am rebuilding....

*cheerios*
Very simple.....if you don't want to contribute.....then don't
If you don't have anything inviting to say....then don't post.
If you are about to post something that is down-right rude......then don't.

If you find it lame........then why would you read all of the posts and THEN post a reply to an already "lame" thread?

PM me if you have a problem with my reply.

I once built a system and the first time I tried to turn it on, nothing happened. I thought I got the case connections wrong, so I disconnected everything and tried again, and again, and again. I completely disassembled the system and put it back together, turned it on and nothing. Then, just by chance, I glanced at the PS switch on the back, I realized I had never turned it to the "on" position. Once I flipped the switch, it worked just fine. :)

Posted by: Apokalipse

ditto to that!
once a friend and I thought we were really smart by pulling appart an old 386, and tried to put it back together
never worked since
- that was like 4 years ago when we both knew fark all

I used to make pretty bad grades in school, and when this would happen my mom would ground me from the computer. Well one time she did and it REALLY ****ed me off. I told her I might as well throw the computer down the stairs since I won't be able to ever use it again, so she said "fine, do it!"

I do have a bad temper... I threw the computer down the stairs then I kicked it multiple times at the bottom. I had taken out my temper on the computer, so I wasn't mad anymore. I took it back upstairs, plugged it in, and it actually worked. I was really surprised. My sister is now using that computer, it's a Dell Dimension L667r

You should pitch that story to Dell. You could be the next "Dell Dude"!! Just don't get caught with pot!!

i once was replacing an old heat sink and fan forgot to connect it, so when i lifted the pc to its upright position, the heatsink fell from the top of the motherboard smashing all the resistors and transistors on the board.

lol...this thread is quite amusing....i havent really done anything really really stupid.....a bunch of little things but nothing big....nothing worthy of putting in this thread......i seriously can't think of anything off of the top of my head....there is this one thing....but it wasn't my fault....A cd-rom blew up in my 56x cdrom drive....ruining the drive...but it wasn't my fault....

That the spirit!!! :D

My house mate has a bad habit of smashing keyboards with his bare hands when he is loosing on some game. He is constainly needing new keyboard every second month.

Posted by: Erik

You wouldn't beleive what kind of shape my keyboard is in. It's horrible. There is sticky kool-aid from last year, Coke, Mtn Dew, all kinds of crap, cookie crumbs. It's awful. I'm surprised the keys still come up after I push them down.

But I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite. It curves up for your wrists to lay on it, then spreads out. There is a space in the center, but I'm used to it now, I have a hard time using anything else, this one is that comfortable.

Oh, and about my temper...That is why my iPod is currently in the shop.

Thats gotta suck....

I remember one time I was helping a friend move and I forgot I had my laptop in the back of my jeep... I threw a table on it..smashed my screen *DOH*

Posted by: hilowe

Smashing screens.... Reminds me of what I did to my laptop.

Had to be on top of a grain elevator with my laptop, for reasons that I don't really want to explain. Let me leave it at, my own fault. To get back inside the elevator, I had to crawl through a little manhole like opening, which was narrow enough I barely fit through with my cell phone on my hip, and then down a ladder to the floor. Someone else, obviously much smarter than I am, tied a rope to the ladder so that things can be hauled up to the roof. So, I tied the rope around the handles on my laptop bag, and started lowering it down. The bag got inside, and just out of my reach, and the knot came loose. Laptop dropped 50 ft to the floor. Destroyed the monitor, and screwed up the sound card. Only thing that saved the rest of the laptop is that it was inside a padded laptop bag. Had to drop $500 for a replacement monitor, then install it myself.

That's better that the number of times i have seen people forget notebooks ontop of cars, and then drove interstate.

I once left a mobile phone on top of a car and drove about 30km. I got out of the car, and my mobile phone was still there on the roof.

Then again, this was about 10 years ago, and it was a Nokia 900 with was a House Bick of a phone.

I haven't really done anything stupid to a computer yet (lets hope that doesn't change when I build my new one when my parts come in.) The stupidest thing I ever did relating to computers, however, is buying an HP. I didn't know much about computers at that time and I definately didn't plan on gaming. That changed after I started my college class on PC Hardware Troubleshooting and Repair, and a friend gave me some great games. After I started playing a few games, I found myself playing every chance I got. So for Christmas, I decided I wanted to get a new graphics card since the GeForce MX Integrated Graphics in my HP were not suffice for the amount of gaming I was doing. I went out and bought a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra, and plugged it into my computer. Windows XP came up and said that my computer's power supply was too weak for that video card. Also, my games ran as slow as heck. So I went out to buy a new power supply only to find out that only a special HP power supply would fit into the case. Not only that, but the CD drives were built into the case so that I couldn't remove them to get the motherboard out and transfer the PC to a new case. Therefore, I had to keep the crappy integrated graphics that gets only 10 frames per second with Medium texture quality and no AA in Unreal Tournament 2004. On top of that, it came with only PC2100 HP memory, and a 5200rpm hard disk drive with 1MB buffer. That is why I am building my new rig and HP will not get another dime of my money, I don't care what product it is.

Posted by: mrdinkel

On many occasions, I've messed up the permissions on the "windows" folder, which locked me out.. It ****ed me off, because I should know better.

Posted by: J4K0B

i remember i was in da 1st grade and i was experimenting witth the CPU board, i took a hammer to it...LMFAO!

Posted by: mrdinkel

Did it survive the test?

Or was it a consequence of the conditions?

Posted by: jeece

Looong ago, I was experimenting with my old 386 SX33... Hey, it was the first familial computer (except a Mac Classic at my mom's), and when my dad bought a 2nd one, I had it in my room. :D So, I thought it'd be a great idea to run it without the cover, and see the components...

I learned that you *can't* hot-swap a ram stick. :o I saw some very small sparks from the slot when I removed it... And computer refused to boot ever after whenever this stick of ram was in. And it was the only one we had...

Well, at least, it ran even without the ram with onboard memory. :D

Posted by: Demalii

Let's see, it was about 4am like usual, and I was working on my computer. I was going to format and reinstall, the typical story. I thought to myself, i should put everything on my d drive, format c, then move everything to c, and format d.. I've formatted so many times in my life I can't even keep track but for some reason I format C, as I'm waiting I watch TV and stuff, then I come back to my computer and immediatly format D!!! what?! what did I just do!! ahhhh haha.. I lost all my web designs, docus, mp3s.. sucked

Then the second thing I did, again at around 4am... I was sleeving the lines on my psu , I plugged them all back into my computer and turned my pc on and heard "wweeeeEEEE POW fiz fiz fiz..." pretty much like that haha, I was like omg!! so I look inside and thought, everything's hooked up right though, what the **** happened here? Well with a closer look I found that I plugged the 5v into the 12v and visa-versa. Thank god it was only my cd-roms that I did that too haha

Posted by: Harper

Many years ago when I was still new to Windows 95 Enviroments (as I was a hard core mac person before that), I mis-took the parralle port on the back of the PC for an external SCSI as I was trying to get my dad's SCSI External Zip Drive to work with it.

Never got the Zip Drive to work......

The Printer never worked the same until I formated the PC a few months later.

Posted by: Ox

about 7-12 months ago i was sitting at my desk with my case open on its side after cleaning up the cables inside. while it was booting i looked around and saw a waterballoon my brother had left lying around my room. Ofcourse i pick it up and start ... for lack of a better term "jiggling" it around and then... *pop*.. water everywhere my fairly new machine at that stage which i saved and saved for over a year and a half to get, being im 14 with no source of income.
had just been splashed with water. I yell NOOOOOO like something out of an action movie.. dive under the desk disconnect everything. and there i was towelling everything very very softly and praying..even though im not even slightly religious (sp?) after disessembling everythinglaying it out on my bed to dry and sleeping on the floor the next morning i did a test... motherboard was screwed.. my geforce 4 ti.. was screwed.. my ram... was screwed.. and my power supply was black and smelled really bad so i assumed it was screwed

2.

my friend just bought a new cd and was swinging on his chair intime to the music.. then he fell his foot kicked the tower across the room and put his elbow through the monitor..

:D

1. I was workin on a old computer of mine, the power was on, and i was tryin to figure out how stuff worked... I was messin with some screws, and i dropped one in the open case, and i saw sparks and the computer turned off. I was scared, but it turned out to do nothin to the computer, which started up right away and worked like a charm.

2. I has just got this athlon xp2200 + a year or two ago, and i kept hearin all this stuff about "overclocking" a computer to make it go faster. I thought, hey its mine, might as well try it. I go into BIOS, change the clock speed, and restart the computer.

I was lookin at a black screen for 2 days. I thought i killed it. got lucky and found some reset switch tho, put everything back to normal, and i never dabbed into the art of overclocking ever again...
*waits for fx-53 to arrive to try again*

Ohh geeze, the other thing I did. When I first got my 3200+ chip, I opened the side tray, like pulled it out to take my hsf off, so I could pull the chip out... So like an idiot I stick the other chip in there and I'l trying to put a hsf on like.. with the gravity just wanting it to fall.. So after like 30 minutes of trying and trying, I'm like this time is it... Well I guess I was shaking or something from pushing to **** hard, trying to get it to latch, the **** thing slipped off and i like twiched to catch it, when I did, I knocked the whole corner off of the die =(.. either way Newegg.com gladely sent me another chip! (i put as5 on the bottom of the peices to the die and stuck it all back together, and covered the top with the thermal pad chunks lol.. it was a classic cover up, I should hate taken pics.

Unfortunateley, NOTHING HAPPEND. And we later found out why...

One of the pins broke off the processor when it was beeing installed in the Loranger socket. So i had to put my old board back-in and replace the processor with a 166mhz Intel Pentium with MMX Technology. (Twice as slow as my old one!)

My Pc has a power jack on the back for speakers. One day I dismantled a pair of DC powered speakers - taking out the original speakers and soldering in a pair of proper hifi ones.
With these plugged in to the back of the PC it was working fine until I came to switch off the power to the speakers then -pop-, the PC shorted and sorta went into a coma for an hour.

Posted by: Cogwork

The biggest mistake I ever did was buying this Pc. It's my first -real- PC, so I didn't know much at all about them. I thought I was getting a pretty good beginners PC when I bought it, but it turns out I was conned - although the motherboard had similar specs to the one I thought I was getting, it was an even cheaper and pretty unstable VIA chipset board - only a few PCI slots, no AGP slot and a very dodgy gamepad/serial slot (but they did give me the manual for the computer I thought I was getting).

When I first came to format it, although I had the original Windows98SE disk, the manual and the CD's case didn't have the registration number on it, and the knobhead's at the shop wouldn't help me.

Unfortunately, I can't remember anything particular dumb that I did .... yet.

my friend bought an apple G4 cube . . .

pretty stupid

Posted by: DOA

The stupidest thing I ever done to my computer is. I got so angry and I throw my mouse and my head phones on the ground and broke both. And I could not get a new one for about a week.

Posted by: beedubaya

Why were you angry, if you don't mind me asking?

Posted by: DOA

A little game I like to call counterstike lol

Posted by: beedubaya

lol FarCry has made me just about that mad, and also Quake III against my friend who nobody can beat.

Posted by: DOA

Just playing games in a bad moon and loseing a LOT. I cant control myself. But who can lol

Posted by: AlecTPR

collegue of mine forgot to tidy all the wires inside the pc when putting the lid on.

Needless to say. it's didn't really work. didn't do anything spectacular as well. thought it might of made the case live........

Posted by: AlecTPR

just thought of another one that I did.

Friend asked me to look at her pc as she said it was smelling of burning.

Took the pc up to the loft (where I fix the odd pc) and plugged it in. Bang !!! fell backwards off my chair, smoke everywhere, nearly fell down the hatch cause i couldn't see anything.

Posted by: DOA

I know a nother stupid thing I did to my computer. When I was little my screen was heating up BAD but I did not want to turn it off so I put a ice cube on top of it. lol not a good thing to do.

Posted by: Ankush09

lolz...did it get ruined?

Posted by: DOA

lol kinda but it still worked for a wile :P

Posted by: mramige

In 2000, when I built my first computer, I installed the cpu heatsink/fan unit backwards and it only contacted about 1/4 of the core, so it overheated in a few minutes. I'll never forget that smell. It was a brand new 1Ghz Athlon.

Posted by: enzio

not as stupid as all yours lol :P

i have (well had since i just got rid of em (i think :/)) like 10 virsues and like 35 spyware things lol

Can you say WATERDEATH? We poured a lot of water on this old celeron, when it survived that, we decided to throw pocket change onto the motherboard

Posted by: Shumway

Well stupid me tonight i thought i'd put an extra fan in my power supply, the next thing you know ZAPP!!! i got the biggest shock i've ever gotten:D it was so bad i let out a little bit of pee:p:p my dam arm is still tingling:(

Posted by: Nubius

lol shumway, you know you can actually get killed from those things right? That's why you're never supposed to take apart a PSU or Monitor because they retain a lot of their power even after long being shut off.

Make sure your heart is still beating normally :p

Stupidest thing I've done to my computer is frying the motherboard with the multimeter :p

Posted by: Shumway

It's ok Nubius the only effect's i got from that is a slight twitch and i talk a little funny now:D:p

Posted by: Apokalipse

okay, I attempted to repair a monitor at a friends house, (I unplugged it) I was resoldering a lot of the transistors, capacitors and whatnot, being careful not to actually touch the circuits with my hands

when I plugged it back in to test it, I told my friend "now don't touch it"
well he touched it and needless to say he got shocked. he was okay after that though

another one:
after I had just moved my hardware into my new Lian-Li PC-V1000 I decided to clean up the wires.
I turned it on to see if I had done it right, and it worked fine, so I went to put more cable ties on the cables (while it was still on)
while I was doing this, I had accidently pushed the molex plug out of my 160GB Seagate hard drive, so I heard it spin down, and I was like "oh f*******"

anyway, I turned the computer off. after turning it back on, and a chkdsk later it worked fine

another thing:
after putting the new cooler on my TNT2, I had to take out 2 of the PCI cards because the cooler sits over 3 slots
I took out all cards, and put back only the sound card and network card
while I was putting in the network card, the back plate contacted the motherboard, and the thing just turned itself on!
I was lucky I didn't have part of the card in the slot, so it didn't damage anything

Posted by: ShoobieRat

I haven't done anything with my new comp (too precious) but once, on my old machine, I installed linux. Dumbest thing I've ever done...poor computer. I ran screaming to reformat and we sat over to one side of the room twitching until it finished wiping each tormented bit from the drive.

If I had wanted to use it as a web server, I might have lasted another 30 or 40 seconds with it...maybe...

I must have been drinking too much that night...

Posted by: TheMajor

I did something to my moms computer.

It was a P166 running Win98.
I decided to organize her files, so I opened C:/
and I created a new folder: "DOS"
and I moved all files from C:/ in there, because I thought it would be better organized with all windows files in the "windows" folder and all files like autoexec.bat and the hidden files in a seperate folder :D

Then I tried to reboot...

I picked up a brand new case that came in the mail for me and I dropped it and the glass was smashed in and i dented up the whole frame was coruptted.. BRAND NEW And I called newegg saying FEDEX did it they sent me another one for FREE with free overnight shipping. They said I could keep the broken one.

Posted by: ShoobieRat

I once dropped a harddrive.

On its fall to earth where it was supposed to impact a marble hallway floor, I kicked out with my foot to catch it or...something...and ended up kicking it like a football for some umpteen-yards where it bounced off a lab door and clattered to the floor.

No biggie, though. It was a Seagate drive. Dust that sucker off, put it back in, and all is well. :)

Posted by: mrdinkel

Let's see.

At the lan Party (before the new year), we had a bet about how long Joe's old P133 would last if we took the heatsink off (with the case off first. Anyway, it wasn't going fast enough, so we shut it down, and put a bawls cap with some water on the CPU (like a heatsink)with super-glue. In the bawls cap was some water.

Long story short, somebody knocked the table, and no more light coming from the CPU.

One guy was ****ed, because he felt that someone ended the bet early. We disconnected all periphials that were good (an LCD monitor), and took it to the shop, where the dude destroyed it with a sledgehammer (Office Space HARDCORE)

I think I have the old Audio card sitting around (or a pic of it). If i find it, i'll attach it.

Posted by: ShoobieRat

I don't think that counds as stupid. I think that's more along the lines of ignorant and short-sighted.

Posted by: OCC Fan

this was before i knew shi!t bout computers, i was like 7 years old and i was playing minesweeper or whatever its called on win98...... i got real ****ed and kicked the side of my computer, and the computer just shut down and i started runnin out of the room. i still hate that game.

Posted by: Joeisalsocool

I screwed myself over twice. My very first prebuilt was an e-machines. That is a laugh and a half. It wouldn't let me install a 6x burner when they first came out. e-machines said there was no support.

Second was buying a Compaq presario 2 years later. Too much extra crap like HP and Dell. 6 months in the hd failed, you can imagine how much fun that was.

Needless to say, I've learned my lesson, and turned to building my own.

I've never fried or broken anything. Although I have been shocked a few times.

Posted by: DJ-CHRIS

Okay stupid things

Recently i assembled a PC without putting in mobo spacers, before i powered on i relized my dumb mistake.

Second, i have zapped myself enough times that i have problems telling the difference between 120volts and static electricity.

Three, a friend of mine hacked the school network, and could set all his privlidges. Unfortunetly, he set it so he had no prvlidges except moving the mouse. Very funny, but he didnt have the privlidge to kinda save it, so it went back to normal when rebooted.

actually bought Norton Systemworks

Posted by: Nubius

hooked up my PC with liquid cooling.

I'd attribute it though to it being a beginner kit, so liquid cooling in itself isn't that bad, but I expected a little more than what I actually got.

Got same temps as the air basically.

took the heatsink off my gfx card cleaned it and applyed thermal grease... now the stupid thing keeps overheating!!!

Thats the stupidest thing i ever did!

put together my friends computer after i had just upgraded it and cleaned it of so many dust bunnys. When i got it all together i tried turning it on and nothing lol. So i took it all back apart and put it back together and nothin and i started cousin and beatin up the walls and all that crap cause this guy had just met me and didnt really trust me w/ his computer. well make a long story short we figured out that i forgot to plug in the power cable to the psu lol.

Posted by: macdude425

I did a few things.. on an athlon xp3000, i installed win95 for fun..
Back befor they had all the case mods stuff, i wanted a light in my pc, so i got a blue car headlight bulb and plugged it into the 1A circuit, Everything worked in the cpu except the power connector circuit, ie, the hard drive, cdrom, cpufan.....

I got tired of my wifes crappy 5400 rpm drive in her pc a long time ago, so i decided to ghost it to a 10,000rpm scsi one day while she was at work to surprise her with a faster hd.. while i was doing it, the power went out to our house. so of course i reboot her pc to a blue screen,, i told her that it was a common glitch in windows xp...............a few years back i wanted my case to be shiny. so i got aluminum tape and coated the entire pc in it, and the inside, it looked poretty cool actually. then a few weeks later i decided to pait it,,, without taking the tape off. little did i know that paint falls off of aluminum tape. that sucked, the inside of my case was filled with paint chips because i painted the inside also............anybody ever tried taking a socket A heatsink off, you put the screwdriver down in the bracket and pull out on it,, but forget to push down while doing it, and you break that little plastic tab off of the cpu socket?iv done it 3 times............................this is retarded lol, my mom had a yard tiller, and she unscrewed the oil cap while the motor was on, shot a stream of oil into her face and then about 1 feet in the air.................she also filled the riding lawnmower with kerosene, she cut all the grass for about an hour, and then decided to come in the house and ask me why it was running like crap and smoking really bad..............she also put drano in the oil on it, for some reason my dad put the drano in a clear container that was dirty, so the drano looked kinda brown lol, she came in the house and said that the mower stopped working, **** that motor was locked up solid...................After hurricane floyd i was cruising going about 60, was midnight,, and i found a road where they didnt block it off due to flooding,, i hit about 5 feet of water going 60, when i hit it, the front of my mustang went off the ground and water went over my whole car, instantly filling the inside with water, and befor i could turn the motor off, i hydrolocked my baby, i was devistated thinking that i destroyed my $7,000 motor, but no, just pulled the plugs out and cranked it over a few times to shoot the water out. ...........................................I know its not computer related, but funny nonetheless

Normally I use Seagate Hard Drives, but when push comes do shove, i will take a Western Digital (WD) instead.

I got a computer system burning in last night. Passed the Burn Test.
Now since the customer was supplying their own optical drives. So I take it out. Boot the computer one more time. And straight away I get this error of NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND.

So I check cables again. Every thing seems to be in order.

Call up my supplier about the motherboard, and they told me to flash the bios. Unfortunalty, they supplied me the wrong bios, and i turned the computer into a $1000 paperwieght.

Call up my supplier again. We had a bit of a blame storm. I finally get a new motherboard under warranty. Install in computer, boot up.

SAME PROBLEM.

So I figured, let's go all the way back to basic....
And then I found out that Western Digital Harddrives have
MASTER, SLAVE and MASTER WITH SLAVE jumper settings.

Way to go! And I wasted my entire morning and a motherboard BIOS to find this out.

I knew there was a reason why I don't like western digital drives.

After that, I don't much like people coming within a foot of my laptop. Unless I trust somebody enough that I know if they drop it, and the screen breaks, or keyboard goes flying, I can get the money to replace it.

Anyways, I was trying to replace my cooling compound on a crap-tastic cpu heatsink/fan. I was so frustrated that I began using a screwdriver to try and dislodge the thing but I slipped and chipped a piece of of the motherboard. The MB was a brand new Abit AV8 939-pin with Guru. I was more than a little ****ed at myself.

Posted by: P.P. Mguire

cant you hot swap external drives though? i mean isnt that what they are meant to do?

Posted by: smileygladhands

Yep. Although I don't really think it's technically considered "hot swapping" when you unplug a USB or Firewire port from an external drive. Doing so while it's accessing is still not recommended, but it won't affect anything other than the file that's be transmitted.

I do not know stupid because nothing broke but i was bored and i do not use this computer anymore. I took an old p3 slot one apart took off the fan it was running at 36C
i then looked on the internet for a way to take the heatsink of the p3 it was desined
with one way pins but i found out useing a case screw popped the pins out. plugged the bare chip back in thought the computer would at least post i was wrong it hung.
I thought to my self what could i use a a heat sink to get the computer in to windows.
I used a philips bit from my screwdriver got into windows but the **** bit got to friggin hot to hold. Next i turned the computer on with my finger on the cpu die i burned my finger in less than a second. Got boreder got a old celeron 333mhz cpu took a hammer to it the silicon in the die was interesting to look at. I have the pin imprint still on my desk.

lol here's a story from last night

Ok their was this PC my dad was trying to fix for someone, any mouse wouldnt work, this was real oldskool. I wouldnt even touch it.

After he gave up, it had an AMD k6-2. I put a 166 in it. Same socket 7.

Now the monitor wont turn on and it just beeps at me.

Even if the PC did work (I found both USB and PS2 headers that wer e unused on the mobo) I would have been screwed, since it was beyond repair, and if i reparied it without new parts, it would be someone else's PC.

One time back in the day I had a Gateway (shudders) and I had put two HDD's in it. One 6 gb, the main was 10. I had to format the 10, it was pretty messed up. My 6 gig drive had myMP3 collection on it. This was in thedays of dial up, so downloading an mp3 took about an hour. Literally. So i went to format the drive, accidently formatted the wrong drive. Crappy. Lost my whole MP3 collection. To this day, several years and cable internet later, I still have yet to rebuild that entire collection. Had some of the best music on there, but no more.

Pretty stupid if you ask me. More depressing than anything.

(I called about this and they said that it was a beater that was in the unseen corner of an empty cubicle they let kids use)

And the bad experiance is that I was working in hem all simultaniasly and during which an electrical shock of high voltage went through the entire SD north county area and according to the news that evening was able to wreck computer components and sattelite/cable recieving equipment and the zap went through the plug that the comps were in and I had my hand in one of the cases hot swwapping a CD-rom and at the moment my hand was on the power plug into the CD drive IT SHOCKED ME ACCROSS THE ROOM!!!!!
And in that happenening I pulled the monitors and towers offof the desk and all were wrecked

Good thing they didn't make me pay for them

Here's my story: I had bought a new video cooler and was going to replace the stock cooling on my 9800 Pro, i had it all set on my table, the phone rang, I got to answer and when i got back my dumb dog had jumped up on the table and chewed on my graphics card. Needless to say my 9800 Pro=RIP...had to buy new graphics card

dude that sucks things like that is the reason i do not have a dog.
Have nothing against them though.

i have a huge dog. ok heres the story. me and the band had a gig to do and motehr wanted to get online and my computer is in the living room becasue that is where the only phone line is in the house. (dads compuer is there to but cant use that, long story) anywho, so i have a phone cable going from the table in the center of the dining room table to the wall on the other side. well i get home and my 3500+ system is trashed and on the floor. i start freakin casue there is everythign screwed up and i also had coolant all over the place and i thought that EVERYTHING was fried. well come o find out mom had turned on teh computer and went to the bathroom to wait out the load up time (swear shes lazy casue that system was a 26sec bootup) well while she went to the bathroom the dog had tripped over the cable and tore my whoel computer off teh table and it was like a 4 foot drop. heres the system specs of the computer i dont have any more GRRR.
AMD 64 3500+ @ 2.2ghz 512 L2
MSI S939 NEO2 PE

I hope you didn't like those hard drives, but that's not really the stupidest thing you've done to your computer....it's what a insurance company would call a "act of god". *sigh*

Posted by: P.P. Mguire

yea, but it was refering to dogs worst moments really. and yes i loved those HD's and i still have them.

Posted by: MacMaster64

Hmmm........ I am thinking to get one I had better be careful

Posted by: P.P. Mguire

well if oyu want your computer to live lol i would keep away from them.

Posted by: DJ-CHRIS

Just cable tie crap down

Posted by: P.P. Mguire

i didnt have any at the time and my mom said she owuld watch my PC for me.

Posted by: MacMaster64

UH-OH

Posted by: Mr. Switch

i would have to say the stupidest thing i have ever done to a PC is get a regular CAT 5e Ethernet cable, a razor, and an extention cord and create a supercharged ethernet connection that made my old Celeron 400Mhz computer literally explode.

i used the razor to cut the ethernet cable and extention cord in half. i then proceeded to splice the wires together and seal them with a roll of electrical tape. i plugged the extention cord into a wall socket and plugged the other end into an open ethernet port.

there were fire alarms, windows open, and a half melted computer sparking, cracking, and sizziling on the floor of my room.

LMAO, yeah i did that as well, never again though.

The most stupidest thing i have ever done was:

I had alot of problems with my computer once and it was hanging alot, i put a CD into the drive and it wouldn't read it it just hung. I got so P!$$ed off i thought i'd use the manual hole in the front of the drive to eject the CD. The only problem was i forgot to shut the power down and the drive made some strange scraping sounds.

Every time i put a cd into the drive after that it kept on making the same scraping sounds so i thought i'd give it to my dad and buy another one for myself.:D

I once got really ****ed at my laptop cuz it wasnt working right, so I folded it up and threw it like a frisbee across my room. It actually worked better after than trip, so I cant really say it was a stupid thing. It was in indirectly smart thign. :D

I also gave my desktop a percussion adjusment because the fan was really loud, and it shut off. Scared the crap out of me, but nothing happened. Kinda scary. Did I already post that? I may have.

That's harsh, lol.

LOL, I used to kick my cheapo POWMAX case to keep it from rattling.

My friends girlfriend had a Dell laptop. Anyway, she had been using it on her bed I guess so the laptop and the power wire was on her bed. As most of you know, there is that power supply in the middle of the wire, which was also located on her bed. If you leave your laptop on for a long period time, this thing gets really hot.

Well anyway, this girl came back drunk and passed out on her bed, her lower back was pretty much on top of that heated supply. She was so drunk, she didn't feel it at all. The next morning the fire alarm in her building went off because her sweatshirt was smoking, and the fire department came and so did an ambulance. She had a few burns on her back because the thing burned through her sweater and burned off her skin too.

We made fun of her for weeks cause of that.

Well thats a different story. I strike my computers very hard when they rattle, resulting in unforseen consequences (see one of my previous posts)

Posted by: Powerslave

I repeaditly punched my computer today for the "hard drive error" that i have had for awhile. it ****es me off.

Posted by: desiboi

I figured a way to stop the HD clicking sound. You gotta punch it hard, right on the motor.

Posted by: robertgp26

I kicked my computer once...i didn't hurt the computer, just my foot :(

Posted by: Harper

Been rather busy in the last 2 weeks, and with the KVM on my service area, some times I am not sure which computer is on or off.

Anyways, I plugged in an IDE hard drive (customers drive) onto a machine that was still running. A split second later, I realised what I did, and I quickly turned off the computer.

Turns on the computer expecting the worst. Thankfully the drive was all okay.

Posted by: supra_boy

stupidest thing i ever did was to uninstall a windows update on my old laptop ( i was trying to save hd space ) lol

a month or so ago i got my hands on another old laptop toshiba tecra 8000 Pentium 2 128 meg ram 10 gig hd
just for the fun of it i decided to see if win xp would run on it. Witch to my surprise it did so i put office 2003 on it to now i use it when im in bed for doing paperwork

Posted by: Alvin.C

I didn't have any spare molex to 3-pin fan connectors to use,.

...So, I snipped a paper clip into 2cm long segments, slotted one in the GND pin on the fan connector, and one in the +12V pin on the fan connector, then slotted them into the corresponding pin in the 4 pin molex power connector from the PSU (mating the connectors together with tape).

When I turned the PC on, there was a sudden spark, pop and rush of smoke. One segment of paper clip had fire out from the fan connector, and into the carpet.

I later realised that there was a short in the connection. Not very clever... :o

Thats nothing. I once turned on on of my school library computers, and couldn't understand why it was powering up, but nothing was happening. I opened it up to have a look, turns out someone took the RAM :p
