upgrading my PC

OK. I have an HP Pavilion a1540n Windows machine, and i'm thinking of upgrading it.

However, I don't really know how to go about that. I have average knowledge about computers, which means I know about next to nothing about how I should upgrade.

I'm thinking of upgrading gradually, slowly saving up money until I have enough money for one thing and then repeating the process.

I want to upgrade my processor first

Anyone have any idea how I should go about that?

if you need specs, just ask.

Also, I am hoping for it to turn into a high end gaming PC (i'm a gamer, and I like games with pretty graphics)

Well. First you will have to tell us what type of motherboard you have. I.E. How many sockets would help a lot. :). From there people can get a general idea of what parts will work with the computer, and which ones won't.

how do I know what type of motherboard I have? =(

Posted by: Coke27

did it come with a manual?

Posted by: Noak3

not that I can remember, but I might be mistaken. I have so many manuals lying around that it's easy to get mixed up.

I have the specs on a little sticker on my computer though, it came with the sticker and I decided not to take it off in case I needed the specs.

the only thing i see you needing to up is the graphics card how much you got for a vid card?

Posted by: Noak3

not much, right now. This will be in a few months that I buy new stuff.

Im doing work for my dad picking up branches, babysitting, stuff like that, so im hoping for around $500 in a few months.

Posted by: Coke27

actually are you a big amd fan or can i suggest an intel c2d?

Posted by: Noak3

I don't really care, as long as it looks good and plays well. I just want something high-end, something I can use to play high resolution (1280x1024) games.

Anyway, g2g, ill come back to this site in a little bit.

Posted by: Coke27

well you can keep the amd and get a 8800gts 640mb

Posted by: Noak3

how would I do that?

intel c2d is core 2 duo, right?

Posted by: Coke27

ya

Posted by: Noak3

so I would just get a core 2 duo that would work with my computer?

I can't go over $500 though.

You can get an E6600 and a P5B-E or DS3 for around 470 or so and that would be your budget but see...you would NOT see much improvment in games as you do understand that in no way are X2's much slower than Core 2's right?

Your CPU is a very good one for gaming and you really shouldn't worry about upgrading it until the new Agena comes out in a few months.

For now if you want to see really high FPS then get an 8800GTS 640mb for around 350 bucks. Your CPU is a good one and not slow at all.

ya, just get the 8800gts i didnt mean that the amd is no good its fine for now so just up your card
