My computer is a Dell XPS M1710 laptop. My college have gigabit LAN connection an i have been trying to connect to it without any luck, my computer identify my lan addapter as Broadcom Nextreme 57xx gigabit controller, driver version 10.24.0.0 and the name is b57xp32.sys, the card is supposed to be compatible to gigabit. The problem starts when i it say it is connected, it say its connected at 100Mbs but when i try to access the internet the pages can't be loaded, i tried testing it on the Broadcom suite 2 on the controlpannel and i found this when i tested the cable: "Partner adapter/switch not configured to gigabit speed", i tried changing the speed from auto to all of the options but then i get a message that "partner adapter is not configured to gigabit speed", i notice the switch part is gone from the message. The computer came with an oder driver but i had the same problem so i updated it. The previous driver was 8.something sorry can't remember the complete version.

are you allowed to connect at college? if not then your MAC address will not be allowed. I would also update all your laptop drivers go to the dell website and enter the details for your laptop.

moving to Networking section....

Have you tried contacting the IT department at school to see what their feedback is on it?

Is this in a dorm, at the library, where? Are you using a crossover cable, or straight through?

We need more details.

Students are allowed to use the LAN as long as they don't download porn. The connectors are on a study room in the Mechanical Engineering building and I'm using a straight cable i bought on Wallmart, 25 ft long Belkin RJ45 Male/Male cable, its very long but it was the only size available. I haven't asked the IT department for help yet. About the drivers in Dell, well i have tried it and i can't understand how to use that page very well.

I would suggest that you contact the IT department, as they would have more info and access to the hardware to do the troubleshooting. It sounds like a switch you are connecting to isn't running at 1 Gig. And yet, it DOES tell you that you are connecting at 100 MB, but cant access the internet. Can you verify that you are getting an IP address that is NOT in the 169.254.x.x subnet?

In order for you to operate at 1.0 Gbps, your network cable must be Category 5e or 6 as of the standard. So does your switch port or hub port must operate at 1.0 Gbps.

The problem is not because it's not operating at 1.0 Gbps, because most adapter and switch port automatically sync with each other to the lowest speed with auto negotiation, which in your case is 100 Mbps, which is fine but the problem you can't connect to the network might be that you don't have the correct IP setup (gateway, DNS) or there's some kind of security enable on the network preventing you access.

Check that you have the correct IP setup by opening cmd and typing ipconfig /all , you can compare it with other students in apartment.

Don't mess with duplex and auto negotiation setting because they can lead to performance and connection problems.
