I use Windows Media Player 10 as my default mp3 player. When I directly click on an mp3 file and play it, the media player opens and the sound is slow and scratchy, terrible. However, if I open Windows Media Player first and play the song through its library, the it sounds fine. This was not the case just 12 hours ago, as I was able to click on the file directly and the song sounded perfect. Since it last worked, I installed Real Player and Quick Time so that I could install WinDVD. This problem applies to all songs not just one. Has anyone experienced anything like this before or know what the problem might be?

That is very odd. Maybe it cant read the song very good from the hard disk unless its in the WMP10 Libary. very very unlikely ofcourse, but just a thought. Try Disk Defrgmentation.

If not, im sorry to say i dont know.

Update: I've been doing some testing. I can get music to work fine when I do what I described in my previous post. But games like BF 2142 are scratchy during videos or explosions. The music and the menu sounds are fine, its just when things get slightly demanding, problems occur. Again, I am using onboard audio and do intend to get a decent sound card but I want to isolate this problem before I do so. The onboard audio did work fine with bf 2142 previously.

sounds like your mobo sound imo.

yup - onboard sound is not meant for peformance. Get a sound card

onboard sound is simply there to make some sort of recreation of the sound that is being played, wether its a good recreation or a bad one is another matter.

Sound cards are for people, like me, who actually wont listen to there speakers with onboard audio, i do so to refrain myself from rolling on the floor crying, and then chucking my speakers and pc through the window, and listening to the more satisfying sound of it crashing on the concrete floor below me. :p.
