My friend wants to use it in his HP desktop, but it's brand new, and he's afraid of voiding the warranty... If I open up the case, stick the card in there, and close the case, is that voiding the warranty? Also, if something was to ever happen to his computer which would make him NEED the warranty, is there any way they could tell the case has been opened, if I remove the sound card and replace the expansion bracket? Posted by: Ste Yes, they have ways of telling if the case has been opened. If this seal is broken usually a sticker in werid places. Or some kind of pin device that sets into a given position if the case is opened. Check their policies, to make sure.. Posted by: charles_scott I havent noticed anything on the newer HP and Compaq cases... That and SEVERAL new computers say you can upgrade them and in the documentation on my brothers newer HP it says nothing relating to him having to send it in to be serviced or upgraded by them for the warrenty to still be in effect. Posted by: bobojuice has to be worked on by a hp certified repair center. if not the warranty is voided. [/B][/QUOTE] Opening the side of the case will should not void a warranty. I argue that with HP, Lenovo, Acer, IBM, Dell, etc all the time. Putting a warranty label on the side of the PC and voiding a warranty if it's been broken is illegal. (or it is in my country). The only time when you can enforce that law is when there is No Servicable Parts Inside or when it's dangerous to have it open or opened by an unqualified person. Eg. Power Supply. Placing third party parts into a HP, Lenovo, Acer, IBM, Dell, etc will void a warranty. And not being a qualified person servicing Placing third party parts into a HP, Lenovo, Acer, IBM, Dell, etc will void a warranty too. And that is legal. In a nutshell, install your sound card into the HP. But just remember to keep the back plate and remove the sound card if you ever need to get it serviced.
