Check connections on the wireless spot your connecting to and on the laptop itself (assuming it's a MCMCIA)

Also be sure that you have the latest drivers installed on the laptop.

Not sure i understand what you mean by " Check connections on the wireless spot your connecting to and on the laptop itself (assuming it's a MCMCIA)" but yeah im gonna get the drivers on my desktop , stick em on a memory stick then put them on to my laptop. Will this work?( remember i cant DL anything on my laptop)

Is this your home network or a public network that you're connecting to?

If it's one that you can access, make sure that the modem and router are securely connected. Anything can make a wireless card malfunction.

Check support.dell.com for drivers for your wireless card.

Moving from Building, Buying, Upgrading for General PCs to Networking forum...

Can you describe the wireless network topology? This is the hardware that makes up the network.
What model router are you using?
How many hosts (PC's, laptop's, console's, etc. etc.) are on the network?
How many of them are wireless?
Do any other hosts have connection issues?
Do you have any wireless security enable on the router?
Are you able to ping the router's IP address?

to answer the questions:
Im trying to conect to a airport express at my home , it has a mac connected by ethernet a PS2 by ethernet a mac laptop wirelessly, a pc by ethernet and also a PS3 and Wii wirelessly, all of these seem to be working fine.
Do you have any wireless security enable on the router?
no we dont have a wep key is thats what you mean...
Are you able to ping the router's IP address?
But of a noob when it comes to networking ... dont know what you mean here

ok, since you have other hosts connecting fine, you have 6 hosts CURRENTLY up and working, and the 7th (this laptop) you are having issues with.

Log into the router's config page, and look at the size of the DHCP pool (I would have to assume you are using DHCP addresses, and not static IP's.... that means that the router gives the addresses to the hosts). Usually a DHCP pool will default to 25-50 or more available addresses.
EX:

If the routers address is 192.168.1.1
the DHCP pool usually starts at 192.168.1.100, and goes to .125 or .150. Make sure that it isn't .100 - .105, (make sure that the RANGE of the numbers is GREATER than the number of hosts you want to connect in your network.)

Go to a WORKING host in your network (a PC preferably) and do this...

START > RUN > type 'CMD' > type 'IPCONFIG' in the command prompt window

Then, jot down the IP ADDRESS, SUBNET MASK, and DEFAULT GATEWAY. Report those back here, and I can further guide you through making sure that the router has sufficient space in the DHCP pool.

Also, what wireless standard does the router & laptop use....
