I noticed this with my bro's computer, being 25ft away from the router, using CAT6. And his internet is noticeably faster and more responsive, than my computer, which is right next to the router, using CAT5. So should I get a CAT6 cable for mine? Posted by: bla!! The difference between cat5 (I'm gonna guess it's cat5e) and cat 6 is that cat5e can run at a max of 350Mbps while cat 6 can run at 1gbps. As far as internet speeds, there should be no difference. you'll se the difference when transferring files between your LAN computers. Posted by: b1gapl OK, but the thing is, my bro's computer is 25ft away from the router, which is in my room. And when I use the internet there, it's a bit faster and more responsive. For example, I go to a website, it uploads, but it's not as instant, as my bro's computer...and I'm right next to the modem and router. Posted by: RyanS There are many other variables between your computer and someone elses besides just the cable. If your computer is running slow(er) than you may want to run some anti-virus/spyware scans. You could also run a defrag on your hard drive. There are myriads of other things to check & tweak but that might be a good starting point. Posted by: b1gapl I have another question. Is it alright to have the ethernet cable out in the open. For example, the ethernet goes out my window, and goes into another window, of another room? Can the wire, withstand temperatures like below freezing to 40C? Because, I can't afford wireless right now, and my mom wants a computer in her room. And we can't drill a hole in the wall, because we're renting. vBulletin Copyright ©2000 - 2003, Jelsoft Enterprises Limited. PPC Management vB Easy Archive Final - Created by Xenon |
