so whats the best way to stop it? with software or methods and without the obvious buying of new hardware =P

There is actually a new network card Newegg has out called the Killer NIC, made by Bigfoot that is supposed to greatly reduce lag and give far better ethernet performance. A lot of people I have talked to say they like it, but a small percentage say that it's not worth the stack of cash you spend on it. Who's to say until you try though? The link is below:

Other than that, defrag, run spyware scans, check PC specs, and possibly find an internet connection tuner somewhere out there on the net.

turn off ur MSN and any other Internet services that are not needed (besides ur Anti-virus,etc)

Wow 250$ for a lan card. Hmm... Something don't seem right there.

You ISP is your biggest problem from online lag. But if the game lag's in general in singel player or offline mode then it's not it.

I'm with Insightbb. (The only cable provider around me.) They aren't great... But anything is better then nothing.
I got a 4 MB cap, But just the other day on tv, I see they now have a upgrade 10.0, Giving you a 10 MB cap. I'll have to see how well that help's.

Seems a bit steep, but then again i think 3k for a gaming pc is overkill aswell.

Ok well i dont visibly lag on online games such as CS:S, but everyone elses ''Latency'' seems to be between about 5-50, and mines around 70-90 !. There is no apperent jumping or stuttering because of lag but i do sometime sget kicked because my ping is to high.

Another thing is even if im not lagging do people with a lower latency have an advantage because information about there actions is transferrred quicker over to other players in the game ? i.e. Reactions for the guns are enhanced, they see you ''first'' ? bullets go quicker :p ??.
