301 or 302 redirect?

Hiya,

I have a question regarding the choice of using a 301 or 302 redirect.

I found this article on the web: http://www.searchengineguide.com/cl...5/0816_sc1.html
and wonder if this is valid?
We had to use a new domain name last year, and as a quick-shot we kept the old domain name and just used the same ip address for both domains, which isn't the best thing to do in terms of SEO.
So, we decided to install a redirect in order to redirect the old domain to the new domain.

Therefore I wonder if ye would recommend the described technique?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hi Rita.

In my opinion 301 is the way to go if you are doing a new domain and want to use the old domain's backlinks and PR power.

Good call.

301 is the preferred and safest way when you are changing domains.

302 is unsafe and risky from SEO viewpoint . It has earned a bad name, as previously some unscrupulous people used 302 to do 'page jacking'.

I agree with vickysoft, and have read some articles about the same thing. I always do 301 on my redirects.
