I'm just curious about what projects are going on that follow their own path. I already know about Haiku OS aka OpenBeOS. but im sure there are others. Posted by: macdude425 http://reactos.org Aims to be fully WIN32 compatible, but still has a long way to go. Posted by: zmatt interesting. its cool that someone is trying to make a win32 compatible OS instead of cutting themselves off from the wintel world entirely. i always thought that was one of linux's weaknesses since most people even if there are comparable linux apps, still like their windows ones. Posted by: zmatt im guessing that nobody else knows of any more? Posted by: Snake-Eyes Not currently. A goal in my life is to make an OS of my own that will run everything. Or as close to it as possible. Be able to run both Win32 junk and Linux junk. But, i've still got many, many years ahead of me. Heck, i only know Visual Basic 6.0, and even then, not the whole language. Posted by: The General Start learning python, C, C++, java, bash, etc... Oh, and study the linux kernel source and the wine source, that should give you a good start. It's going to take a while. :( Posted by: zmatt yeah nobody ever said writing an OS was easy. and it always takes more than one programmer. it takes teams. my freind tried to write his own, based around fluxbox, and he got bogged down real fast. but yeah ;earn the big languages. and join a team, it can be fun. Posted by: The General He tried to write an OS based around a GUI for *NIX? Posted by: zmatt it was a *nix based os. he wanted an os that could run on anything sorta like DSL. Posted by: hilowe There's the GNU Hurd kernel. I don't know if they ever got got something that would compile and work, though. Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurd Here's a quote from the article "The latest release of the Hurd is version 0.2. It is fairly stable, suitable for use in non-critical applications. It is not yet suitable for a production environment." So, apparently they did get it to work. Posted by: The General lol@hurd You can use Debian with the hurd kernel, but it sucks. Posted by: hilowe
Originally posted by The General lol@hurd You can use Debian with the hurd kernel, but it sucks.
I've never used, just heard about it. But that's almost exactly what I heard about. But, zmatt didn't say it had to be a kicka** OS, just a non Linux or BSD OS. Posted by: zmatt yeah thats true. it seams not very many Open Source OS projects are independent from Linux. they are all just forks. i was hoping for something different. it really doesn't matter either way i guess. just as long as there is a viable alternative to windows and Mac. for anyone who is interested you can learn more about Haiku at www.haiku-os.org they have a lot of cool ideas, and it has potential. Its not Linux, so don't expect it to be like Linux. and it is still in alpha so it has a ways to go. Posted by: Snake-Eyes Like i said, it's a life goal of mine. Nothing i'll accomplish next week. I'm expecting it to take a few years, even after i know a bunch of languages, to get it together. Posted by: zmatt and a few hundred coders. Posted by: horndude DOS, yup its still around and kickin Posted by: zmatt DOS is only 16bit. i think it can only access 10megs at a time lol. last time i checked win3.1 was abandon ware tho Posted by: horndude like I said DOS is still alive and being developed it answers your question as it was stated freedos and opendos vBulletin Copyright ©2000 - 2003, Jelsoft Enterprises Limited.
