Microsoft has stated that its next latest and greatest OS titled "Vienna" will be ready for release in 2009! Kinda brings up the question of why not wait and skip going to Vista!?!?!?

Posted by: Harper

This is a bad sign...................

I remember that Windows Xp was announced just as quickly after Windows Me got released.

Posted by: King X13

lol yeah and longhorn was supposed to be out 2 years after XP and they had to completely scap that for vista. this OS will be out by 2015 prob lol.

I don't know about skipping Vista.... If they say that it will be ready for release in 2009, maybe we should expect it by around 2012 :D

Posted by: hillbillybob

lol...10-4. Me...I think I will hold the reins on Ubuntu/WinXP for a bit and see how Vienna turns out.

Do they think that by releasing new operating systems more often, that will make them better?

Posted by: Sui

No but they think it'll make them more money and they're right.

Vista IS the new ME, haven't you been reading what everyone besides MS has been saying?

Nothing anyone can do or say will convince anyone who knows anything about computer than Windows is a good operating system for any reason other than ones that can be attributed to the fact that it is the most popular operating system in the world.

Games? Cool, not because it's better. Because it's more popular.

Hardware compatibility? Cool, but not because it's better, but because hardware manufactures make sure their hardware works with the most popular operating system in the world.

Better for office types of things? Why? Is there something about the operating system that makes it better for office environments? Or could it be that software companies write software for Windows because it's the most popular operating system in the world? Could it be because most people know how to use Windows, and most people are stupid and don't want to change, so give the workers what they know how to use?

Just makes sense/easy to use? Could that be because you grew up with it? Awesome, now go get someone who grew up on Macs to use Windows. Their view is completely different. Not wrong, just different.

I argue with people all day long about PC/Mac/Linux. Where I work, there are a lot of weirdos who actually take the arguments into real life, instead of leaving the arguments on the internet, where they belong. Those are their main arguments. The fun part is when I mention Linux, and they're all "zomg Linux is teh shiz!" and I ask why they don't use it, and it's because they are too dumb to figure it out.

I love the whole "case mod" argument they bring up some times. The jist of it is "you can't put a window on your case and have lights and LEDs and stuff on a Mac" ... usually my response is either "what was that you said about buying Macs because they are pretty?" or "well, yes you can."

Sometimes I want to strangle them because of the stupid crap they say, lol...

I used Windows exclusively for a LONGGGG time. Then, in like 2003 I found out about Linux. My brother had been using it for quite some time, I figured eh? What the duce, I'll try it. BAM hooked. Then, in 2006 I took a digital imaging class (which I didn't finish, and am still taking, lol) and after the first DAY of using the Macs there, I was like WOW I want one.

Anyway, I don't know why I started typing my life story, I'm over it.

Posted by: Nubius
Anyway, I don't know why I started typing my life story, I'm over it.
lol, keep telling yourself that until it comes true.

Essentially.......aren't you and havoc saying the exact same thing? He just quoted you and reversed it by saying "less often" but then reversed the other and said "worse" so it should technically be saying the exact same thing.

Overall, I'll openly admit I'm a dumb bass turd and linux seems like too much trouble for me.

As far as macs go. I'd get a mac solely to run Protools on. I do like running protools on a mac more than I do with the PC's. Of course, I've gotten a LOT more time with protools on mac than with PC's so I'm getting more used to the shortcuts and whatnot for mac.

Either way though, I like my PC and it's because I'm more familiar with it and yes, it is the most popular OS in the world so it does have more support, etc..etc..

Does that make it better? Nah, of course not, that shouldn't even be an argument.

It's always good to have multiple options though.

I might go to Linux if I had someone to show me the ropes, but considering I'll need this PC to run ProTools on, I will HAVE to have windows unless you can show me a way to get protools to run with Linux and many other things.

What conclusions have we come to?

Bill gates is the evil anti-christ of the human race and steve jobs is an acid tripping hippie who charges too much for his designs, both have their perks and downfalls.

Posted by: The General

^ Yeah, the problem with ProTools is that it's creator (I don't know much about it, who makes it?) doesn't have a version for Linux, so you'd have to use an alternative ... but since you're learning on ProTools, you might as well just use ProTools... see? It's not that Windows is better, it's that you're locked in because they have a monopoly... :(

Posted by: Enterpriser

What would happen if Microsoft became licensed under the GNU General Public License? That would be something.

Posted by: The General

I would consider using it, due to the fact that there are lots of games for it. But that will never happen, so dream on. :p

Who really gives a crud? Just because you hate Microsoft doesn't make Windows a bad OS either. Yes it's the most popular. Yes there are other great OS's out there. No that doesn't mean that Windows is horrible. I get everything I want done in it. If you want to use Linux/Mac, go for it, and be happy with it. If I want to use Windows, I will without caring what you think, and I'll be happy that everything just works. I used Linux for a long time, and I loved it. But I went back to Windows because it's more popular and everything works. There are lots of good OS's out there, and there's really no need to argue about them.

Posted by: K M A N

Ooo windows Vienna, why did they name it after the capital of austria, why just why !.

2009, thats very unlikely. They announced it in 2000, and since then has been delayed by years, so 2011 is more likely, by that time we'll be using DX10/11. Imagine that, it'll be good :)

AWESOME.

IM SO COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS. THIS IS GOING TO BE LIKE AMAZING. SZOMG DX11 WOHOO

Posted by: mac_mogul

My guess is that Microsoft just now finished the original Longhorn concept and gave it a new name. Everyone at microsoft is getting ready to go on a 2 year vacation.

Posted by: TheOtis

Haha. I want to start using Linux for the simple fact that I disslike supporting Microsoft in anyway. I just hate the idea of any company having a monopoly in any industries. It makes it completely un-fair for the smaller guy to get anywhere big, (like Linux). I mean I wont even own a Xbox 360 for my loathing of Microsoft. Without Windows support for games, theirs no way I'd be running it right now.

But the fact that I've been a PC gamer since "Sin" came out( I was like, what, in the fifth grade ish), kind of makes it hard for me to switch. If they could have games be supported by Linux, I'd be the happiest man alive. I'll start getting to know Linux soon, I love the idea of not having to spend $120 bucks per machine I build for the OS, (Unless I want to pirate, which I'm not 100% down with).

I think the fact that Microsoft is already planning for their next OS to be released in 3 years show that Vista must not of come out the way they had hoped. It seems as if they should take a lesson from Apple.

Vista is our current generations Windows ME and I hope more and more people realise it as time goes on. Before Microsoft consumes their souls even more.

An anti-microsoft attitude is childish. Whether you like them or not, they've done a lot for the computer world. That is a sad reason for wanting to use Linux. You should want to use it because it is a great OS.
I think the fact that Microsoft is already planning for their next OS to be released in 3 years show that Vista must not of come out the way they had hoped. It seems as if they should take a lesson from Apple.
Wrong. They were tired of hearing people whine about Vista not being released yet, and they were tired of hearing people say there was too much time between releases. So on both counts, they are trying to please the customer. If they waited another 10 years instead of 2 or 3, people would trash them for that. So with MS haters, they can't win no matter what they do.
Vista is our current generations Windows ME and I hope more and more people realise it as time goes on. Before Microsoft consumes their souls even more.
Wrong again. Windows Me wasn't hardly any different from 98 with a few bug fixes. Vista is a pretty big advance from XP. The true current generation's ME is Windows XP Media Center Edition. Now that is a waste.

Most people won't go out and pay for Vista. They will just buy new computers when they normally would upgrade, and Vista will be on it.

ill be making the move to vista but only because they are starting to make games that require it
ill probly keep xp handy on another hd for a while tho

Are you trying to pour gas on a fire that was dead?

Havoc and I were having an excellent conversation, and the thread died. Then you came back and stirred up the pot.

Go away.

Besides... This rumor has been debunked.

Ya i was planning on wating a while to... at least until the summer anyway.

lol @ WorldIndustries... Have you ever read the ingredients of those sausages.... if not you should.. It completely turned me off from buying them... Ingredients may include: chicken and/or pork and/or beef.... yum

I'll be waiting until Fiji before I even consider spending money on Vista.

Posted by: t3ch_threads

I don't think Vista will necessarily be as bad as ME (m$ would HAVE to try to do that). Most people will follow the crowd and get it anyways. But I think i'll pass because of the drm. I want to be in control of MY computer. Vienna and Fiji will probably be worse in terms of drm and lock down. I don't know how long m$ can keep windows going.

I'm sure you're being sarcastic and in which case I think you are absolutely right: look at what they did with Halo 2- MS loves hype and attention, its right up there with making money. And if we weren't so suspicious we might start liking them for it.

isn't Vienna a city in Austria?

Ha, you know what? i think it is.

anyway, regarding what i've been hearing about Vista and the issues of not being able to reinstall after hardware changes and all that (true or not), i'm hoping Linux will become more hardware, game, and user friendly (i hate putting in commands), cause when the day comes that i can install CS:S on a Linux machine without an emulator i'm switching but, untill then i'm stuck in windows because i'm addicted to CS:S like a hippy is to weed

Posted by: charles_scott

The day I can install MSN and other things onto Linux, I will be using Linux... I really like linux, my major set back is trying to get warcraft 3 tft and diablo II LOD to run on it with MSN Dial up...

Posted by: mikee

In my opinion vista was released incomplete kind of like ME then shortly after xp was released so vista is probably just to get something out there for people to buy before the more complete vienna is released
so maybe we will see some of vistas dropped features such as winfs and aero diamond.

I think this basically summed up the whole thing.

Posted by: NvidiaDude

I Knew they would come up with something else Which is exactly why i didnt purchase Windows Vista.. and if this Windows "Vienna" will be a success then im buying it

Posted by: M733mhz

So you're going to use an OS that nothings being made for over the next 2 years instead of get Vista?

Posted by: Mjmitch2

Staying with XP for the next couple of years and not going to Vista is not what I would call "taking a chance". You don't always need to have the latest and greatest s/w or h/w to accomplish what you need to do on a computer. I for one will not be purchasing Vista now, I will wait to see what develops with Vienna over the next couple years and make a decision then.

incidentally, I am in the process of refurbing an old box in order to play with Linux. :)

Posted by: M733mhz

I never said it was taking a chance, Sure there's lots of people that can get done what they need done on XP. I in no way have the latest and greatest mentality. I'm just saying alot of games are gonna be on Vista (Halo 2 :)) Usually when MS releases a new OS, They drop the old one. That's probably how it's going to be with XP.

Posted by: Mjmitch2

"Microsoft said consumers who still have Windows XP running after April 2009 will be entitled to five more years of "extended support."

although some of that support you may have to pay for.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16805062/

Posted by: M733mhz

Wow, So they're planning on charging for customer support? What a load, You pay a minimum of 90 dollars for their OS, only get to install it once and you have to pay for customer support if you don't have the latest version. Way to go, I'm sure MS as a company really needs the money out of 60 year olds pockets because they can't remember where they saved their files.

Boy, that was an old post. But maybe you're right. I don't give a crud if someone likes and uses Linux. I have used it and liked it. But maybe I do give a crud if someone harasses me for opting to use my "free" choice to prefer Windows. But that argument is long in the past.

Anyway, didn't you guys read the post in this thread from much earlier? The whole Vienna thing has been debunked. It was a hoax. Of course MS will come out with another OS. Why wouldn't they? But it's not because Vista is another Me.

Guys there is an app out there called cedega. its a linux app that allows you to run DX games seamlessly. think of it as WINE with balls. since it has DX M$ makes em license it so it does cost money but its well worth it.

thats the site.

Where did that come from?

Anyway, I definitely don't think it's worth it. I pay $50 for a game, then I have to pay Cedega a monthly fee for the rest of my life to play the game that I just paid $50 for. And that's hoping that the game is on the list of games that they got to work. I didn't even like the idea of Cedega when I used Linux. I'll just play my games on Windows. Pay once, play forever.

Posted by: Enterpriser

What is unfortunate is that GNU/Linux users even have to go through all of that to play a game, but hey the world is not fair. :D
