Ubuntu root/user password...

I installed Ubuntu on a spare 20GB hard drive I had lying around... My only problem is that I can't log in

When it was installing, I set the default username as Josh, and set my password, but it won't log in. I don't know how to get into root either... How do I reset the password for "Josh", and how do I access "root"? Will I be able to access them from the GUI login screen?

Make sure it wasn't josh and not Josh. If you can't log in, try booting with the argument init=/bin/bash in Grub. That should let you reset the root password (use "sudo passwd root") and your password ("sudo passwd Josh").

on ubuntu root is disabled by default
