So, as with most of you, I'll be getting my tax returns back in the next month or so. I'm putting it all away except for $650.

This $650 is going towards one of my 4 options. First off, let me list my current rig-

AMD X2 3800+ @2.5ghz
ASUS A8N-SLI32
Gigabyte 3D rocket pro
OCZ Platinum memory- 1.5gigs.
7800GT
1x WD 74gig raptor
2x 160gig Seagate

I play FPS and I also enjoy RPGs and racing games from time to time. Here are my options i've narrowed down-

1) Get a PS3(since they're available everywhere around here), the 20gig version. Get a second controller and a game or two.

2) Get a Nintendo Wii and a 8800gts for my current rig

3) Get a 8800gtx and a game

4) Intel C2D E6400
ASUS P5B-E LGA775 P965
OCZ Gold 2GB DDR2800
Zalman heatsink

Number 4 would put me just over 650, which isnt a problem.

But with option 4 I'd end up keeping my 7800gt.

And please don't respond with "Get an xbox 360". I've already had one and sold it.

I should also add I do have a high-def TV. It's a 32in LG 720p. So I would benefit from the PS3 supporting high res.

I think they're all good options. I've been leaning more towards the PS3, because of MGS4,UT2007,final fantasy games, the support of blu-ray dvds(Yea yea I know, no one knows if it's going to last), and many great future releases.

Also, the wii and the 8800gts would be nice, because then I'd have a console that has great games already and a 8800gts that would destroy my 7800gt, and it'd support DX10 games when they're realesed.

I'd just like to get fellow gamers inputs on this and which one you might choose or you think sounds the best.

My friends here that do play games are all big time halo-lovers, so I can't really get any input from then.

EDIT: It's also good to keep in mind that this won't happen for another month since I wont be getting the money until then. So as far as prices for computer components go, some could go down.

#2 or #4 are what i think are the best options

Posted by: Danks

I feel sorry for any gamer that does not own an Xbox 360.

Posted by: killians45

I would also change number one to 360 instead of PS3.

Posted by: TheOtis

Well thanks for the input guys. Although I did say I already had a 360 and sold it, haha. It's still appreciated.

I think I'll stick with number 2. Then get a PS3 once MGS4 is out, I'm sure by then their will be many more games for it.

Posted by: Danks

MSG4 will come out for the 360 also.

Why scew yourself from not being able to play games like Gears of War and Halo 3, when you can get the best of both worlds.

A 360 MGS4 is still just rumor, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did come to 360 which I would take in with open arms. :D

If it's third party, and not published by Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo, you can guarantee that it will be ported to other consoles.

The era of exclusiveness is dieing. Cost of making these new games are going up. There’s just too much money to be made porting to other consoles, especially to the Xbox 360, which has the upper hand since they got most of the market share. (360 = 10 milling, Wii = 2 million, PS3 = 1 million)

I mentioned Gears of War and Halo 3, because they're both published by Microsoft and will never jump to PS3 or Wii.

Posted by: Z3N

Option number #4 - Chances are, that if you've already bought - got bored and sold a 360, my guess is you'll do the same again with anything consol. ;)

Posted by: TheOtis

I'm a huge fan of MGS and gran turismo, those are the two biggest titles that have been makeing me lean towards the PS3. Those and UT2007. I'm just as stoked for it as I was for HL2 and quake 4. Also I forgot where online, but I saw a huge amount of killer looking horror type games coming out for playstation.

Plus being able to watch movies in 720p would be killer. And games already look incredible on the PS3, so in a year or so, I can see developers doing great things for it.

I actually thought about getting a 360 again. I sold mine back in August, which was right before alot of good games started coming out(the big one being GOW). I was at blockbuster and was just looking at the games they had for the 360, and they have such a better collection then they did then.

And in response to Zen, I thought about what you said and had a good laugh, because that's pretty much what i've always done. I've owned a ninentdo, snes, playstation, N64, xbox, playstation 2, and 360 all in my lifetime, and i've noticed i've been coming back to PC. Simcity 3000 and half life were the games that got me stuck on it in the beginning I guess.

I know I'll end up getting atleast two of those at in the next year or so, it's just a matter of what one first I guess.

I guess my only thing with PC's are(I hope this doesn't start anything), is how costly it is to keep up. I know I know, it's how it's always been and how it always will be. But one thin I do like a lot is how socket 775 is going to be around for awhile. The fact that they support quad cores is awesome, for when the time comes to get one.

AND, this will be my last big purchase for a year or so, because I'm moving out this summer( I'm only 19, not a 40 year old living in his parents basement haha). So I'd like to pretty much get the most for my money. Something that'll keep me satisfied for awhile. Which is why i'm having a harder time picking what I'm going to do, I'm not down for dropping 600-650 on something and not being into it 3 months later.

True, but I wouldn't be counting on it like it's assured. MGS4 isn't slated till Q4 2007, so it would be almost a year from the PS3's launch. I'm just saying it's very optimistic to say it will come to 360 for what we know at the moment, and it's incredibly optimistic to say "you can guarantee that it will be ported", and I'm not a follower of optimism.

The funny thing is about my 360, is that I've got GOW for christmas, and I haven't even played it for more than a couple of hours because I'm far too busy playing on my PC (and it isn't even that powerful of a computer, other than the CPU, and that just goes to show that gameplay > graphics)

UT 2007 is also slated for the 360, just so you know.

Maybe adjust number 4 and get a e6300 and ds3 with 8800GTS.

I like that option the best. If you got bored of a 360 you are gonna get bored with a ps3. Because they are basically going to have the same games. Except for Halo3 and Halo Wars.

Posted by: Infernicus

number four, cause you can now rig the wiimote to your PC and im betting they'll release a new emulator for it if they havent already

Posted by: TheOtis

Cdub, the only problem with that is my current rig is DDR and I'd have to get DDR2 mem to run on an intel mobo. So I couldn't do that option.

I'd like to see where you heard that the wiimote willl work with a PC. It'd be pretty cool if they came out with emulation software for wii THIS early.

The only thing that really is straining me away from doing the computer upgrade is how spendy it is, and how long it'll last. plus i'd still have to get a DX10 card.

That's why the 8800gts/wii thing sounds like a good idea to me. Then I can have a sweet gameing rig to play FPS on, and a wii that'll have alot of games as well.

I guess I could always get a PS3, see how much i like it, and turn around and sell it for what i paid for it and the games if i'm not satisfied.

I couldn't say the same for my computer, i'd be getting a good amount less out of it.

PS3 is my personal preference, Although the xbox 360 sounds pretty good...Not really a fan of it though.

I believe 60" TVs are a waste of money. Until consoles can play games like Supreme Commander, C&C 3: Tiberium Wars, and other RTS games, I'll be sure to have a PC around. I also love my mods, user made content FTW! I also would like to be able to play Oblivion maxed out without my framerate dropping to crap like it does frequently on the 360. Not to mention shooters on PC > 360.

And if anyone like big TVs, then you could just play your computer on your TV. It's not brain science you know.

I would for sure get a 8800 GTS and a Wii.

Posted by: TheOtis

In response to beefcake-

I have a 32" LG LCD HDTV that supports 720p. Not that high of a resolution. Is it even possible to set my resolution higher then 1280x720? If I remember correctly I couldn't with need for speed carbon.

Also, depending on the response I get about that, I'm going to be making a home made projector. I can only use a 15" screen because, any wider, and it would go off the overhead. And the 15" I've seen are all up to 1024x768 i believe. Would playing computer games, a PS3, or anything higher then 480p for that matter, on it make the resolutions stay that low? Or would it be possible for the games to play at higher resolutions? I love the idea of playing games on a 6 foot screen, but not at low resolutions.

EDIT: I apologize if any of this doesn't make any sense, it's late and I'm tired ha.

Have you ever played a console game in 720p/1080i/1080p? Have you seen Gears of War in 1080i/1080p? With full 5.1 Dolby digital sound? Or watched a movie in 1080p, with full suround? I'm pretty sure you havent, becuase you are a fool if you think a 60" HDTV is a waste of money, sh1t.., prices of HDTVs have dropped 40% from last year and you still think its a waste of $$, lol, u r a fool.

As for shooters, once Halo 3 comes out, the 360 will have 2 of the hottest shooters on the market, that being Gears and Halo 3

RTS.., yeah, consoles lack on good RTS, but once Halo Wars comes out things will be different, mouse and keyboard easily compatible.

Ill be shooting it up at the comfort of my living room with friends drinking and having fun, while you're cooped up in your little room like a hermit with your lil pc lol.

Once you grow up and figure out how to play with the big boyz, come holla at me. Ill show you how to really game.

PC gaming industry is scared to sh1t, and you know why? Because you know and I know and everyone knows that :

Have you even seen a clip of Halo Wars?

I dont think anyone can comment on it since there is none.

Posted by: Beefcake

I won't believe anyone would even try putting Halowars on the same level as C&C3.

Not graphics, I mean user interface, the 360 officially has no support for the keyboard and mouse except for that gizmo that does do it (and that is really only a substitution instead of direct support). If anything, the halowars devs would take a look at LOTR: BFME II, and most of those controls are based off the buttons. If they gave the support for keyboard & mouse it would make it unbalanced and unfair for players who do not have the ability to do so. So kb&m support for online matches would be out.

The point is, console RTS games can not micro like a PC can. Effectively using units on multiple fronts would be such a disaster to accomplish.

EDIT: For those who do not know RTS slang, micro means micromanage

Just don't forget too, that I have a 360 on a 42" Samsung HD LCD. It's not incredibly hard to play a PC on a TV and just use a 360 controller.

If you want to have fun with friends get a Wii, or maybe go out and do something, it totally owns playing splitscreen on a shooter. Which brings me back to TheOtis.

What is this homemade projector you speak of? And yes, if the TV highest res is 720p than 1280x720 is the highest resolution (although some TVs have a weird resolution like 13xx by 7xx). You can not surpass the maximum resolution.

And sorry if I'm going off-topic, so I'm going to end this other discussion by not posting anymore of it.

Posted by: TheOtis

Thanks for the response beefcake-

I've read alot lately about makeing homemade projectors for a quarter or so of the cost of buying a consumer one. It pretty much consists of a over heard projector and a LCD monitor. I've read alot about how to assemble it.

The only thing that would make it worth while for me, is if I could play games through it at atleast 720p, because that's what the PS3 supports,(If I do infact get it).

I've noticed everyone that has written about makeing home made projectors have used 15" LCD monitors. Which posses a bit of a problem for me wanting to play the PS3 in HD. Because from what I can tell, the highest they support is 1024x736 or so.

But to play in HD with the PS3, I'd have to have a LCD that could support 1280x720. From what I can tell, the smallest monitor that supports that is a 17".

This is a problem because, a projector only has X amount of space on it to put the LCD screen on. So if it overlaps the area that the projector projects, then the screen will get cut off.

So I guess my question is, would you, or anyone happen to know if any 15" LCD's support 1280x720?

And no worries about posting off topic, it happends. I mean, look at the question I'm asking about now, haha.

I don't know why you keep bring up your pc connecting to a big screen, [Bypassing the profanity filter is not allowed].

Back to what I've been saying.

What would you prefer to spend cash on.

Console + 60" Sony SXRD + Digital sound system

or

New PC

Posted by: Beefcake

There is possibly another problem if you want to run 720p. 720p and 1080i are both widescreen. I'm sure you can still run it, using the regular 4:3 ratio on 1024x768 (not quite as sharp as 720p), if it's anything like the 360 which allows you to run on non TV standard resolutions via VGA cable.

Posted by: TheOtis

Danks, if you've been paying any attention what so ever to what we've been talking about, you wouldn't have made such a comment. Did I ever ask if it's possible to connect my PC to a TV? Don't believe so.

"Console + 60" Sony SXRD + Digital sound system

or

New PC"

That's completely irrelivant to my situation, I said I'm only spending $650, not $1000+.

In regards to beefcake-

I know they're widescreen, I guess I just didnt't take that into consideration. I think if I ever did do the projection idea I'd just get a projector, they've actually gone down in price at circuit city from what i've noticed.

I'd be much better off spending $600 on a projector that's made to run wide screen as opposed to building one and it not being able to support atlesat 720, thus eliminating the whole purpose of building one ha.

Thanks for the input beefcake and everyone else, it's been much appreciated. I think i've decided to try out the PS3 for awhile. And if I don't like it, I can sell it and still get all the money back. In that case, I'd end up upgradeing to a killer rig, or whatever the top of line video card is out at the moment.

I can't wait to get a 8xxx series card finally, my 7800gt is borderline not cutting it anymore, and won't be after 6 months or so from now.

Posted by: TheOtis

Hey all-

Just an update I guess. After thinking about it for god knows how long, I've decided to get a 8800gts and a 360 HD-dvd player.

I came to the conclusion, that I'm a PC gamer. I'm sure I'll get a wii at some point seeing as how they're only 250. I'd get much more use out of the 8800gts and having a HD-DVD player for my computer, then anything else I could buy.

I thought alot about what games I could get for the PS3 that are exclusives that I would WANT. Not that are available, but that I would buy and play. And I could only come up with 2. MGS4 and Gran turismo HD.

I'd much rather enjoy UT2007 on my computer then on a console. And with a 8800gts, I could have alot of fun with it.

I figure, if the video online for Crysis, looks THAT amazing with a 8800gtx, UT2007 has to run pretty **** good on a 8800gts.

Also, in the next 3-4 weeks, I'll be writting a guide on here on how to use the xbox 360 hd-dvd player on the PC. I've ran across plenty of sites that have talked about it, but haven't came across any comprehensive articles on it.
