A dude in the art dept broke off the cd tray on his dvd. I pulled an old drive apart to use its tray and realized it was different. What dvd burner would work for the g5 desktop. would prefer to get it at newegg if possible. Also is it a simple as replacing the drive ie no driver issues. sorry I am a pc guy. thanks for the help.

Here's a list of selected drives and how compatible they are with Macs. There's also this driver:

...that will make most drives work with OS X. It's quite good - I use it with a cheapo $50 KHyperMedia DVD burner in my G4. The only problem it has is that the Finder freaks when you try to burn a DVD - the only way to overcome it is to set another program to open (like Toast) when a blank DVD is detected.
