Schools District Ditching Macs PC's
It would seem that more and more school districts are getting rid of Macs in favor of PCs. The argument, valid or not, is that the school district needs kids to learn on a platform that 95% of the “real world” uses.

Willard said he decided on the new platform because most people use Microsoft programs in "the real world," and open source systems provide a way for the district to keep students from downloading items such as music and movies onto the school's computer hard drives -- items that, ultimately, cost the district to delete.

Cool, We have a novell server network running windows NT 5(2k, xp) on workstations, the other 2%(rough numbers) are mac OS x, and it's difficult to get perfect host integration...We can't get the mac os x's to properly authenticate to our proxy server. I can see where that owuld be a problem with lesser popular systems as well.

The world is what you make it.
If you want your kids to see the world as a big blue error screen, go right ahead...

I don't see people in the 'real world' using PC's for much longer...
Kudos to the schools who have Macs, if only I had been so lucky to go to one.
My school used PC's and they are nothing but trouble. They have to upgrade them every two years, and even then its only 'basic' systems running the same software as the older 'basic' systems.
Had my school opted to switch to Macs, they would've gotten better computers for the same expense. :sigh:

our school used to be 100% mac, but then they got rid of them all for win2k machines. They have since updated about 50% of those to winxp

I am going to have to sort of disagree here. We just spent $2,200 a piece for 10 G5 Pro's with the intel processor here at work and got better spec's for the 10 PC's we purchased at $1200 a piece...where are you getting your logic from exactly?

Other than the fact that "G5 Pro's with intel processor" don't exist, where are you getting a quad-Xeon workstation for $1200? Because I will buy 2 right now.

And I don't believe mac_mogul said anything about money at all in that post.

What do you mean? They do so come with the intel processor? They come with 2 in fact.. I thought the G5 Pro's were the Intel Core Duo dual processors correct? I just saw the GHZ speed and other hardware components. I think the Core 2 Duo's we bought though will still eat it for lunch :)

I beleieve he mentioned something about expenses I am not sure..this is the only reason I brought it up..All I know is we speant way less and got WAY more RAM, and WAY more HD space, and WAY better video cards on the PC's for a much lower price.

Posted by: bzflag

Quit making things up. It can't be a g5 and have an Intel processor. G5 was the processor before Apple switched to intel.

I guarantee you didn't buy anything for 1200 that will eat a new Intel-based mac for lunch.

You have never been able to directly compare anything based stricly on numbers across different platforms. You can't directly compare an Intel chip against an AMD chip, a ATI card vs an nVidia card, or a windows box against a Mac using this method. Straight numbers are really only good for comparing one product against another in the same line of product.

Mac Pro's are NOT called G5's. There is no way a Core 2 Duo "eats it for lunch" ... do you know anything? Mac Pro's have two dual-core Xeons. Not those crappy NetBurst Xeons, these are Woodcrest/Conroe Xeons. Get your facts straight before ever posting in the Mac section again.

Oh, and you still haven't found me a quad-conroe work station for $1200. Probably because the processors alone cost about that much. ;)

Uhh.. is there really any point behind these lines?

I don't see people in the 'real world' using PC's for much longer...

Okay, so when the change does happen, the schools can change with it. They aren't really buying the computers for the future.

Kudos to the schools who have Macs, if only I had been so lucky to go to one.

Because searching the web, or typing up that essay is a whole different experience when using a Mac instead of a PC!!

My school used PC's and they are nothing but trouble. They have to upgrade them every two years, and even then its only 'basic' systems running the same software as the older 'basic' systems.

Okay... your school sucks. Enough said.

Had my school opted to switch to Macs, they would've gotten better computers for the same expense.

So what Macs can you get for 300 dollars? Because schools really like the idea of spending 800+ dollars per computer.

Yes, it's a humorous exaggeration of Window's instability as a means to put down Microsoft products.

The "change" is when people start buying Mac's, or using Linux regardless of what the majority of people use in the status quo. Sitting back and waiting for it to happen, and then doing something about it isn't going to cut it.

If schools aren't buying computers for the future, what are they buying them for?

I'm assuming you're joking, given the obvious similarities between using a web browser on a computer regardless of it's operating system, as well as the obvious similarities between the different keyboards.

So, you concede that kids in schools need computers for searching the internet (research papers, etc.) and typing essays. What was not possible on the Mac that they need to do? Are they going to be playing Windows-based games? Maybe ... doing some Photoshop (wait, no, that's for Mac too) ... maybe ... AutoCAD? Elementary school kids using AutoCAD?

Am I missing something here?

I wasn't aware that the quality of a school's education is directly effected by the speed of the computers they have in the classrooms. When did this take effect?

Sorry if mac_mogul's school didn't have quad-core work stations with dual 8800GTX's and 16GB of RAM, but like you said, school kids only need the computers to search the web and write papers.

I don't know if you are aware of this or not, but Apple gives massive discounts to schools. Buy 80 iMacs for $250 each. Really, do you have any idea what you're talking about?

Now, on to why you are posting in the Mac section... I thought we scared you away before? You always seem to come back, and we always seem to destroy your unmitigated self-righteousness.

Have a good day.

Do I know anything? Please don't treat me like some rookie general you know me better than this :)

I know a few things..and I admit I may have been wrong about the Mac specs but truth is I choose not to learn more about them because I despise them so much. Now before you Mac fans hammer me I am not just some PC loving fan boy.

I for a living support both the Windows/Mac platform for a Gannett news paper. Now of the 60 or so Mac's we have and 400 or so PC's we have the Mac's and there problematic OS seem to make up 75% of our helpdesk case load.

Everyday we hear the sounds of sweet crisp Mac reboot chimes and the die hard Mac user fan base consider this "normal" they are in shock when I tell them I have not rebooted my home or work PC in 3 months. We deal with the clever "rainbow-beachball-spinning wheel thing" far to often. Printers just dissapear or stop working all together. We have tried 3rd party networking solutions to get the Mac's to play nicely with our windows network but they still suck. Do you deal with this many Mac's on a network and there problems? Have you ever supported them? Not doubting that you have I am just saying your views change really quick when they suck so bad for your I.T. team. I used to like them.

I don't know what could possibly cause problems like that. I take a few classes at a college in my town, we have a network of 250 Macs, ranging from old iMac G4's to Mac Pro's and Core 2 Duo iMacs. We have never had a single problem like you are describing.

"Beach-balling" is something I have never experienced, though I do hear about it. The beachball is like the time piece in Windows ... so in Windows when your mouse cursor disappears and your system hangs (which happens to me every day at work, EVERY DAY) its probably the same kind of thing...

Posted by: IBMan

i get the beachbaling on the ibooks at work every day, not once in the last 3 years has my cursor disappeared and my system hung that badly.

I was not trying to turn this into a debate, my appologies. I just did not want this to seem like I was just some book worm kid talking out of my ***. I have been in the I.T. game for 7 years now straight out of high school and have had PLENTY of time with the Macintosh platform all the way back from the OS8 days :)

The new OSX Tiger is not bad when it works, but that is far to rare. I may warm up to them again should they ever perform at least half as good as our windows based PC's.

WINDOWS HAS PROBLEMS, NO WAI!! But my point to this, is getting a BSOD in school really a problem..? Do you guys think it EVER happens in school? Because it doesn't, not enough to call it a problem..

The "change" is when people start buying Mac's, or using Linux regardless of what the majority of people use in the status quo. Sitting back and waiting for it to happen, and then doing something about it isn't going to cut it.

What... you aren't really commenting on my point... my point is when Macs (if ever) are more dominant over Windows PCs, then we can switch to them. Until then, why the heck would a school switch to Macs when 5% of the world uses them and they are looking for an OS that is used by the real world...

If schools aren't buying computers for the future, what are they buying them for?
Umm... NOW??

Yes, it was a joke.

Nothing, isn't possible on the Mac(for school.), but that's not the point, the point of not using them is that they are not used by 95% of computer users...?

I am not aware of this. Anyway, I will concede here if you show me where you got this information.

And what about discounts on Windows PCs? They don't matter? I'm 99% sure my school got a bunch of free IBM Thinkpads with Pentium 4's, and 512mb of RAM

Now, on to why you are posting in the Mac section... I thought we scared you away before? You always seem to come back, and we always seem to destroy your unmitigated self-righteousness.

Scare me away? The only thing you guys do here that scares me away is flame... Actually, scratch that, you're the only one who flames, and seriously need to learn some online courtesy. And be a bit more open minded. But I digress.

I would really appreciate if you didn't always flame me, and every other Windows user. It degrades these forums down quite a bit, IMO.

Yes, it really helps, and perhaps if you had it, I would respect you for how much you know. It's a shame that's not the case.

Okay, since you really want me to type up a response, I will, but you hardly deserve the effort.
