Hooking up External USB HD to 360?

Can you hook up and use an External USB Harddrive like say a 50gb. I have not bought one yet and tried. And can you save games. I know you can transfer music and stuff through a USB flash drive to your 360. Never seen anyone try and write a savegame file to it though? Can it be done? I'm sure Microsoft has that angle covered though.
Thanks

I know you can use it for music but I'm almost positive it won't allow you to save games on it.

this is the External HDD 320GB [USB] For Xbox 360

Plug the HD into your windows PC using the USB connector,
Copy any/all music/pictures you want to save onto the HD,
Unplug HD from PC, and plug into the XBox 360 using USB connectors on front thats all. Should be a reasonable price..

You don't have top use that one though. Any usb hard drive will work. I'm sure it will be more expensive than, say, a Seagate usb external HDD.

You cannot use any external HD to save game files from your 360 and move them to the PC. I have not heard of that external 360 HDD before, i doubt it's official, or is it? confirm please.

Anyway, if you really want to hook up a bigger hard drive to your 360, you will have to break the warranty by opening the 20GB HDD itself and removing the 20GB samsung HDD drive (i think it's that) and replacing it with something else. Whatever you replace it with probably won't fit and/or work. I'm not an expert at this and i do not recommend messing with it. If you want to transfer saves use a memory card. :)

You can hook up any type of external hard drive to your xBox 360 via a USB external hard drive enclosure... It will read as removable storage. However, you can't save games on it, and you can't save any xBox 360 content on it. However, it is more convenient for storing movies, music, videos, pictures, that kinda stuff. That "official" external hard drive is bulls***, and will probably be a 150% markup from what you can get by buying a hard drive and enclosure yourself.

As for opening up the Xbox 360 HD, that's probably a huge no-no, as they've most likely (I should say 100% likely) that Microsoft has a lock on these hard drives, so if you cracked it open and put another hard drive in it, it's not gonna work.

WorldIndustries hit the nail on the head.

Yea, but I don't think Microsoft have put a "lock" on the hard drive, because there are many sites out there that tell you how to get your saves off your hard drive blah blah. What's the point in ruining a perfectly good console for some save files? I don't know, but there are some real geeks out there who have nothing better to do I guess...
