Trying to use WAP instead of wireless card or USB.

I have a linksys WAP [connected to laptop] (54g, v3), and a Cable and Wireless router [connected to PC], and I want to use the WAP to connect to the internet on my laptop, while still being able to use the internet on my PC.

For some stupid reason, I set my WAP to automatically obtain an IP address, because I thought that always fixes things, and I couldn't go on the PC because my sister was on it. My router also automatically obtains an IP address. Both my DSL modem and router need to connect to a phone port, using a filter. I also have a normal, non wireless phone, which was apparently needed if I wanted to use Vonage. If I plug my router and modem in at the same time, neither connects. If I unplug the router, then my DSL modem works, but my router will of course not. If I unplug the modem, then my PC's internet won't work, and I won't be able to troubleshoot if my laptops won't work also. I can't remember what the IP address of the WAP was meant to be.

Is there some way I can get both PC and laptop online? =\

Posted by: Law

Well your setting is confusing to start off with.

This is how you should have it setup.

ISP<------->Modem<------>Wireless Router

The DSL modem should be the only device connecting to the phone line, and that modem should have an RJ45 port to connect to the WAN port on the wireless router. Then 1 PC connect wired to the router and the laptop should have a wireless adapter to connect to the wireless router.

From what your situation state, is that your wireless router is actually a modem also? Please give us the brand and model of all your network devices so we could clear that up.

gamer.... didn't we already address this issue??

Please see the replies also in the other post...

That was back when I was trying to use my WAP like a router, which is impossible.

Because I can't seem to communicate what I mean, I remember that some Godforsaken guide recommended that I drew my set up. It goes something like this:

http://www.freewebs.com/gamerunknown/picture%20side.bmp

Computer

1. 'BT Voyager 105' USB ADSL modem
2. USB power line for modem.
3. DSL line -> phone filter. (8)
4. 'Cable and Wireless' Router. Wireless 11g ADSL Router*
5. DSL line -> Phone Filter. (11)
6. Networking Cable -> Back of PC.
7. Phone Socket. Room for 2 filters. (8) is plugged in.
8. Filter for (1), plugged in.
9. Cabled Phone.
10. DSL line -> Phone filter (3)
11. Router Filter (Not plugged in)
12. DSL from Router (5)

*Model No ADSLR10CW3
Defaults-
IP: 10.0.0.2
Login: Admin
Password: 1234

Laptop

13. Linksys Wireless G access point with SES. WAP54G ver 3.1
14. Network Cable -> Back of laptop.

I tried to plug just the router in, but that didn't work, then I tried bridging the connection and using both the router and the modem, and that made my computer lag like **** and didn't work, and then I tried just using the router again, but AOL would only detect the built in modem of my computer. When I plugged the DSL modem back in, it wouldn't detect that either for quite a long time.

Thanks for any help.

Posted by: gamerunknown

Oh and the router does have built in DSL (which doesn't seem to be working =\). My DSL router, for some reason, doesn't have that networking cable, just the DSL one <_<.

Ok, I have re-read this post, as well as your previous post.... I am waiting on looking at the picture you provided, becausee it will take over 10 minutes to download it... 8 meg file, at 5 KB/sec.... next time, please try to save as a JPEG or something smaller than a bitmap image.

Can you conform for me if these are the 3 devices that you are using???

EDIT: Saw the picture... that isn't quite what was meant as far as a diagram... but it will do.. .I will check it out later, about to leave work, and I have a ton to do a home tonight./EDIT

Posted by: gamerunknown

Yeah, sorry. My drawing is terrible, but I didn't plan on doing something really detailed or circuit style. I knew it wasn't what the guys meant.

The pictures are of what I have to set up the wireless, yeah.

I used .bmp because I thought that you wouldn't be able to see the lines in any other format.

Posted by: RyanS

gamerunknown, you didn't answer Ethereal_Dragon's question about your hardware. If you don't help us, we can't help you.

Posted by: gamerunknown

By "The pictures ... yeah" I meant the ones Ethereal posted, not the drawing I did.

So, in others words, I confirm your post.

Sorry, Ryan.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

Ok, I have looked over your diagram, and all I can say is WoW.... I think your network is VERY bizarre.....

Here's the beef......

First thing is first... you should un-hook everything, and completly re-vamp the topology of the network.

STARTING AT THE WALL SOCKET
You should have the phone filter plugged DIRECTLY into the RJ-11 wall outlet. The phone side, obviously goes to a phone. The DATA side of the filter will be connected to the ADSLR10CW3. The BT Voyager 105 DSL Modem can be set aside, as it will NOT be needed. (This is ONLY able to be connected to 1 PC via USB... It is possible to use it on a PC, and connect the PC to the router and use ICS to share the internet, but it is a pain, and the main computer will have to be on to give access to the other hosts in the network.)...

DO NOT CONNECT MORE THAN 1 MODEM TO THE SAME LINE!!! THIS WILL NOT WORK

After you configure the integrated modem/router, you will be good to go on wired hosts, and you are then left to just set up the wireless portion of the router, and the LINKSYS
WAP54G.

As far as Vontage is concerned, I am not familiar with how the network needs to be set up... The only thing I can assume is that the phones will have to be connected to a Vontage complian router, (Quality of Service options are recommended to give the router the ability to prioritize voice traffic over data traffic.)

Also, I attached a network diagram a threw together in paint in about 3 minutes... that is how the network should be, although I am not sure if the WAP54G will function as you want it to, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

Posted by: gamerunknown

Well, there seems to be a problem =\.

AOL won't detect the DSL part of the router properly, and then won't connect to the DNS server, or DSL, IIRC.

I'm not sure if the wireless works if the router is in, because I thought it would be pointless to just have my laptop working.

Also, my firefox seems to start working at random, but it rarely works on startup. Also seems to be an AOL problem, but it could be from the time I made a network bridge that I CAN'T GET RID OF o_0.

Posted by: gamerunknown

Alright, I modified the Router a little, just made sure I spelt the password and username correctly, and I also set DNS server to on. I'll see if the wireless works now, then I'm going to a friends house to revise for a test and go to the gym ^_^

Thanks a lot for everyones help, especially Ethereal and Law, you made things quite a lot clearer =p

Especially since I always turn into a blithering idiot on these forums, haha.

Posted by: gamerunknown

More blithering to come =\.

The DSL part of my router will connect, but there seems to be a problem with my Router part =p.

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7392/spiffynq7.png

My WAP is set to automatically accept IP addresses under TCP/IP.
So is my LAN Router.

Not sure if that's meant to happen.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

ok, first things first....

You keep mentioning that AOL isn't working... From the screenshot you are sending, AOL is configured to use a DIAL-UP modem.... This isn't the same as DSL. For that, you would have to connect the modem directly to the phone jack in the wall.... If you have broadband service, there is no reason to dial out to AOL.

Secondly, if you are able to get to the router config from a PC, then the router is working... It is configured for DHCP, and if it wasn't then you wouldn't be able to get to that page unless you give the PC a static IP address.

For ease of troubleshooting, lets not worry about the wireless right now... lets just get the wired PC connected to the internet. Once we reach that point, then we can proceede to the wireless.

Posted by: gamerunknown

Oops, sorry I didn't make it clear: I managed to get the DSL part of my router working.

Otherwise, this is what it would look like. (GlobeSpan modem plugged in).

I went to another forum to try and get people to respond quicker, and found someone was using my alt account without permission, so I requested a password change for the email for that account to be sent to my main email account, so I could the email for the other account, so I could request a password reset link to be sent to that account.

In the middle of doing this, my father switched off the computer from the plug, probably because he thought it was time I should go to the gym/ he wanted to go on for a while/ he gets annoyed while babysitting/ he gets

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

ok, so now the router is connecting, and the LAN portion of the router is working correctly, you just need to get the wirless working, correct?

Posted by: gamerunknown

Yeah, that's right. I would have explained more, but my dad went to watch some videos on youtube.

My lunch break just ended... this is what I was able to find on the Linksys AP in the past few minutes......My lunch break just ended... this is what I was able to find on the Linksys AP in the past few minutes......

Default info for WAP54G

IP: 192.168.1.245
username: admin
password: admin

When configuring the Access Point.....

IP: Make SURE the IP is in the same network as the router. I suggest using a STATIC IP address.

SSID: Must be IDENTICAL for all wireless devices in the network.

Channel: User the SAME channel for all wireless devices in the network.
Posted by: gamerunknown

I put in the IP to try to configure it, in firefox and ie, but I kept getting offline reports. Then I tried using the properties in network connections, and I gave it the default ID, and put the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 for some reason. I also made the default gateway 1.0.0.0, also for no particular reason.

Should I somehow edit the DNS server, or is there some other way of making it work?

Posted by: gamerunknown

Oh, and, I've been receiving packets the whole time, it just hasn't been transmitting them.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

Are you able to get to the AP setup page, or is that were you are getting the work offline message?

If you CANNOT access the AP config page, then I would recommed:

With the setup you have, here is what I would recommend for the Access Point:

IP: 10.0.0.16
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
Default gateway: 10.0.0.2

make sure that the computer you are connecting it to has the SAME info (give the computer a 10.0.0.15 address so that they are in the same subnet, but not using the same IP address.)

Posted by: gamerunknown

My router is connected to the desktop, and my WAP to the laptop. I have three questions.

1. Am I meant to use the IP I gave the LAN connection to connect to the WAP over internet explorer? (If so, it says: "Webpage not available offline, connect or work offline." Then it says "No internet connection detected")

2. How am I meant to give the laptop an IP =\?

3. Should I connect the WAP to the desktop, and use my other DSL modem to try and configure the WAP on this line?

Posted by: gamerunknown

Oh and: The IP for my LAN is 10.0.0.4 (but TCP/IP is set to automatically detect), and for my router, 10.0.0.2. On my laptop, I made the IP for my LAN 10.0.0.16, cuz I thought that was what was meant by changing the WAPs address. I don't know the WAPs address, but I can't connect to anything on IE, I think.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

ok, we will try to get at this step by step......

First thing is the Recon... get the info you will need, and plan it out before you start.

Router info:

DHCP Pool's available addresses: 10.0.0.4 - 10.0.0.5

Router's IP Address 10.0.0.2 255.0.0.0

Router's SSID: (not shown in your screen shots, you will need this)

Router's Channel Number: (not shown in your screen shots, you will need this)
Your router has a STATIC IP address, as in it doesn't change.... This is on the LAN side of the router, at this point, we don't care at all about the WAN side that faces the internet, ONLY the LAN...

The Access Point's DEFAULT config will have the following settings: (make sure you reset the AP to put it back to these settings)

IP: 192.168.1.245

username: admin

password: admin
Now that we know the AP's DEFAULT config, and you have just reset the AP back to this DEFAULT config, it is time to connect it to the laptop via ethernet cable. Connect the cable, then assign a static IP address to your laptop.
(See this guide for how to change the IP address of your laptop: How to Assign a Static IP to Your Computer)

When giving your laptop an address & subnet mask, use the following:

IP Address: 192.168.1.244

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.245
Now that your laptop & the AP are in the same subnet, open an internet browser, and type 192.168.1.245 into the url bar, and it will take you to the AP login page if everything is set up correctly.... user/pass is admin/admin. What you will want to do is change the access point's config to:

IP Address: 10.0.0.3

Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0

Default Gateway: 10.0.0.2
and laptop to:

IP Address: 10.0.0.4

Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0

Default Gateway: 10.0.0.3
EDIT:
You will have to put the AP's NEW IP address (10.0.0.3) into the browser's url bar to access it.
/EDIT

Now, all the equipment should be on the same subnet, and the laptop should still be able to communicate with the AP.

(more to come.... at work, getting busy, so I will send the rest in a bit... let me know when you are able to complete this portion.)

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

Great, now that all of your equipment is on the same subnet, and the PC connected to the router is working, and the laptop can access the AP config page, the only thing left to do is configure the Access Point to communicate with the router.

You will need to make sure that BOTH the router and the Access Point are using the SAME SSID and Channel for the wireless, or it will not work.
Example: (typically the default)

SSID: linksys
Channel: 6

For details on navigating the AP's config, see the user guide .pdf file on the WAP54G Homepage

After the AP is configured, I would put the laptop back to gain an IP automatically from DHCP.

SIDE NOTE: Your addressing scheme is unusual, did you pick that yourself, or was it the default on the router? I say it's unusual, because it allows for a VERY LARGE number of availabe host IP's on your network with the 255.0.0.0 subnet mask... With my personal LAN at home, I have a 10.10.5.25 IP address scheme, with a 255.255.255.248 subnet mask which allows for 4 usable host IP's... just enough for my 2 PC's, PS2, and the laptop./SIDE NOTE

Posted by: gamerunknown

omg grawr. I was so happy to connect to the page, but then it wouldn't accept admin admin! GRRR.

I attached the SSID and the other thing you asked.

Posted by: gamerunknown

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/1049/ssidnw0.png

Kay, that didn't work. <_<;

Posted by: gamerunknown

Okay, I think it might work now. It's set to Configuring the WAP54G. *is excited* *crosses fingers while typing*

*touches wood*

What I did, was use the setup I downloaded from the Drivers section of linksys.com, which I saved to CD.

Configuration failed ='(. It says it's a cable connection thing, so I'll just replace the vonage one.

omg grawr. I was so happy to connect to the page, but then it wouldn't accept admin admin! GRRR.
This being the case, are you positive that the AP was reset back to factory defaults? According to the Linksys page, if you are using a WAP54G, the default user/pass is admin/admin, as shown on page 16 of the manual... page 23 of 84 in the .pdf document..
It says it's a cable connection thing, so I'll just replace the vonage one.
Can you give more details about where this error is seen, and the exact message that it gives you.

Posted by: gamerunknown

Well, I tried again, after all of that, and managed to complete the setup from the disk (didn't bother trying that infinite loop on IE) Now, though, it still won't connect to the net, even though it's now both Transmitting and Receiving packets. I even set it to automatically accept IP and DNS, but there appears to be a problem with DNS on both my desktop and laptop =(.

I followed your instructions so far, I think. I'll try to provide a more in depth report a little later (seeing what exact info I have on the laptop)

At the moment, I'm also in the Live Chat Queue on linksys.com, but it doesn't appear to budge. I tried refreshing a few times, and it cleared me down to 6th in queue, at which point I refreshed, and went back up to 9th in queue.

Posted by: gamerunknown

Also, even after Setting it up via the driver info, I couldn't access the web with admin/admin >_<.

Posted by: gamerunknown

and, probably the last point: Downloading from site: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\hdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm. Keeps appearing at the bottom of IE =(

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

Ok, forget the disc.... do the setup manually, as I have layed out for you....

Have you pushed the reset button on the AP to get the config back to factory defaults? Still hung up on this one... you won't get access to it if the password has changed and you don't know it, UNLESS it is reset to factory defaults.... Can't really proceed until this is done.

Posted by: gamerunknown

I did reset it, that's how the IP got that way. But the password still isn't accepted =(. I did see something that said "You have to change the password to access the web setup", but when I changed it, neither admin or my new password worked.

I think the setup on the internet and the one that comes with the disc are similar, as I managed to get the packets coming both in and out when I made the channels and SSID the same, as well as being able to do everything else you said. The problems were:

1. I still couldn't connect to websites.
2. I still couldn't enter the WAP config.

I also noticed that when I tried to update my AVG, it said "could not ... name". I couldn't remember exactly what it said, but I'm almost certain it concerned DNS.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

Ok..... with the AP sending & receiving packets, go to the laptop, and see if you can ping the following:

Access point ( 10.0.0.3)
Wireless router (with the LAN IP.... 10.0.0.2)
PC (whatever the IP is...)

To do that, go START > RUN > type 'CMD' & hit enter....
Then type ping IP

Example:
Ping 10.0.0.2

Then, try the same from the wired PC, see if it can ping the router, AP & laptop.

Posted by: gamerunknown

.2. and .4. worked on my computer ( I guess they're the router and computer IPs)

.3. worked on my laptop (WAP or laptop IP)

LAN Status is at 110 packets sent and 191 received though on my laptop.

I've got nothing at the moment on my "Network" part of the Windows Task Manager.

I have to go now though.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

Ok, obviously, the AP is not associating with the wireless router yet... I would contact Linksys to see if you can get the issue with the password on the AP resolved... not much we can do until then.

Posted by: gamerunknown

Okay, turns out username was blank, and password was admin. I switched the band to the same as the Router, but I still can't connect.

My laptop settings are now:

Liezl F. (10104): Okay, please assign 192.168.1.5 to the PC.
Liezl F. (10104): 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask
Liezl F. (10104): 192.168.1.1 for the default gateway.
Kieran: Okay
Liezl F. (10104): Then, 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 for the DNS servers.

SSID: CableWireless

Channel: 10.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

Thats not going to work, unless you changed the IP scheme in your network.....

You have to make sure that all of the devices are in the same subnet, but using different IP addresses.....

If you use 192.168.1.0 network with 255.255.255.0 subnet masks, then only the LAST number in the IP address should be different between the devices....
EX:

192.168.1.1
192.168.1.2
192.168.1.3
192.168.1.4
192.168.1.5
up to
192.168.1.254

are all in the same subnet, with 255.255.255.0 mask...

Also, you should meniton to Linksys that their user manual clearly states that it is admin/admin... they should have that fixed.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

If you are going to use a 192.168.1.X network scheme, then here is what I suggest.....

Set the following:
Router

IP: 192.168.1.33

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.240

DHCP Pool range: 192.168.1.35 - 192.168.1.46
Access Point

IP Address: 192.168.1.34

255.255.255.240

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.33
Then, have the hosts (PC's & laptops) set for DHCP, and they will automatically aquire address between 192.168.1.35 - 192.168.1.46.

The DHCP pool will give you a total of 12 useable addresses for hosts in the network... this should be more than good, unless you plan on having more than 12 hosts connected at one time.

Posted by: gamerunknown

Questions that don't really need to be answered, just eliminating anything that could be wrong with the connection.

1.Should I set up the Router like that for LAN?

2.Also, DHCP pool range would be User Defined Start Address to User Defined End Address, right?

3.Oh, and do I need a Gateway Address/selection <_<?

4.+ What are these? Are they Necessary?

a.DHCP Relay
b.DHCP Relay Target IP
c.User Mode

Posted by: gamerunknown

Oh and it says it has limited connectivity, with no Default Gateway, no DNS server, and no WINS server, on my LAN network.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

1. Yes - you would enter that info for the router in the LAN CONFIGURATION page.....
info in my previous post is what would go in there....

2. Yes, the .35 would be the start address, the .46 would be the end

3. I would leave it as Automatic...

4a & B - No, you don't need those... that would be for if there was an additional subnet on the network, but you only have 1 subnet.

4c. I am not sure what that selection means... I can only guess that it woudl allow multiple users to log into the router? What are the different selections available, and what does it say about that field in the router manuals?

Posted by: gamerunknown

4c. Single or Multiple. I have multiple selected.

More to come tomorrow, I guess.

Posted by: kfc469

Wow, Ethereal_Dragon you are amazing at supporting. I applaud you. Do you have all of this saved somewhere or were you just coming up with all of this off of the top of your head? You've really spent some time with this one.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

Lol, well, part of it comes from my CCNA Certification. Unfortunatly, work has changed a little bit, so I no longer work with customer's equipment, so my helping here does 2 things.... first and foremost, is helping out the members as much as I can, and keeping the info in my head, so it doesn't just disapear....

Also, I am a good multitasker, and I type pretty fast when I am in 'the zone', so I can research fairly quickly at work.

Gamer, I hope we get this workin for ya bud... I will be back on later tomorrow night, after work (part time job that I won't have computer access at).

Posted by: gamerunknown

Thanks a lot for the help, I agree with KFC, you have a lot of patience.

I want to be an ethereal dragon when I grow up o_0.

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

Gamer, has there been any progress with your network?

Posted by: gamerunknown

Nope, I kinda hoped that you would be able to take the next logical step in troubleshooting, even though it seems to me everything is configured perfectly.

There could be a problem with compatibility, as AOL only supports "Netgear" routers. I thought a "Cable and Wireless" one would work also, because it said it was suitable for AOL and the wired AOL works with it.

I'll try hooking everything up, I removed the WAP from my laptop to carry it upstairs a while back.

Posted by: gamerunknown

I'm almost certain that AOL blocks anything but Netgear routers.

Nothing like maintaining a monopoly ^_^.

I don't know why we don't change ISPs, if there are any UK people following this thread, recommendations would be welcome.

Is there any way to bypass this restriction?

Or should I just call it quits and take out some money to buy a router <.<?

Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon

Hey Gamer..... How is this issue going? I am sorry for being away for so long... Life has been hectic lately....

I stumbled across this when looking at another thread, and it has some value for this thread, if you are still trying to get the wireless going....

http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=231

The AP would have to be set to REPEATOR mode...

Posted by: gamerunknown

Okay, going about this a completely different way...

How do I set up a wired router?

Because I orderd one off of eBay.

Posted by: gamerunknown

Well, it arrived. I tried just plugging one ethernet into the back of the computer and another into my laptop, but it wouldn't connect.

I think it could be because I was accidentally using one of my wireless routers and the phone jack was kind of hanging out of the wall...

I didn't bother trying again until I had the go ahead from one of you guys... >.>

Final bump before new thread <_<

Gamer, Start a new thread for the connection issue, since this one (was originally supposed) to focus on getting the wireless devices connecting to eachother....

Starting with a clean slate would be best bet IMO.
