(please answer some questions for me!)(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)Posted by: layaspeak Hello. I am new here, I was hoping that some of you that have a career in IT, IS, MIS, or CIS could help me out with a project for my business class. So can anybody here do me a favor? If you're into that field and are willing to answer a short set of questions, can you post the company that you work for, and the job title you have? 1. What are the duties performed during a typical day? Week? Month? Year? Do you have a set routine? How much variety is there on a day-to-day basis? 2. What educational program is recommended as preparation? 3. What kinds of courses are most valuable in order to gain skills necessary for success in this occupation? 4. What degree or certificate do employers look for? 5. What kind of work/internship experience would employers look for in a job applicant? 6. What are opportunities for advancement? To what position? Is an advanced degree needed? (If so, in what discipline?) 7. Is this a rapidly growing field? Is it possible to predict future needs for workers in this field? 8. What other kinds of workers frequently interact with this position? 9. What are the main or most important personal characteristics for success in the field? 10. What are the greatest pressures, strains or anxieties in the work? 11. What are the major job responsibilities? If you really don't mind answering those (if you don't want to answer all of them that's okay too), I would really appreciate it. I've talked to a couple different companies and they either: didn't respond or told me they didn't have time for a 20 minute interview. Thank you very much! Posted by: Win2kpatcher You can PM me if you want and I can answer most of them. Just dont want to waste time if this is a fly by post ;) Posted by: layaspeak Oh no, this isn't a fly by post. :) PM sent. Posted by: office politics 1. What are the duties performed during a typical day? Week? Month? Year? Do you have a set routine? How much variety is there on a day-to-day basis? typical day for me as an IT worker. i could get woken up by a phone call from the office saying some systems down and we need it up el pronto. Possible vpn in, otherwise rush to get to work. co-workers may approach me as I walk in the door with help desk tasks. logon to workstation. quick review email. reveiw scheduler emails (backups, server reboots). mail inspection reports (cus stupid server can't send the mail by itself....low priority future item). touch base with department coworkers. refresh on status of current projects. discuss future or new projects. start work on high priority items. all the while, resolving help desk support tasks from end users. Delegate or collaborate these tasks with coworkers. 2. What educational program is recommended as preparation? For my level? 2 year college degree in IT related field or 3+ years related work experience. A+, Net+. MCSA/MCSE are a big plus. 3. What kinds of courses are most valuable in order to gain skills necessary for success in this occupation? technical writing. business writing. programming (general concepts). database. web development. human communications. 4. What degree or certificate do employers look for? I see job postings usually have any 2 or 4 year degree in a IT related field, A+, MCP, CCNA. Higher level job postings require 4 year degree in CS or CE. 3+ years work experience with concentrations on job related topics such as Exchange, Flash, AD, etc 5. What kind of work/internship experience would employers look for in a job applicant? i say you want to strive for IT related jobs. but even if you cant get one, get a job where you can show off you IT skills to the employer. Its not only what you know but who you know as well. Do good things for people and people will want to do good things for you. 6. What are opportunities for advancement? To what position? Is an advanced degree needed? (If so, in what discipline?) loyalty to your company, the longer you stay, the higher on the ladder you SHOULD go; you could get a job where thy wont advance you and thats when you should start looking elsewhere. related degrees and certs usually advance your career. see above. 7. Is this a rapidly growing field? Is it possible to predict future needs for workers in this field? maybe not so much growing as is changing. keep up on your knowledge as not to become obsolete. Read mags and journals or chat with colleages to know where the industry is heading. 8. What other kinds of workers frequently interact with this position? Management is always on you. Not just your department management but everyone's. Most if not every department has IT functions. Heh, even our janitor has a timesheet. So he has a login, home folder, and possible printer issues. 9. What are the main or most important personal characteristics for success in the field? friendliness. you need your users to want to communicate with you when they have a problem or want a new implementation. but dont let them do you over by taking advantage of you. responsiblity. gotta get your **** done. 10. What are the greatest pressures, strains or anxieties in the work? I wanted this done yesterday. I have a ba-jillion things to do and youre bothering me with low priority items, get off my ****. We're currently aware of the situation and are working on a resolution. We'll contact you as soon as the status has changed. The system is slow. IT is trying their best. 11. What are the major job responsibilities? keep systems running. strive for zero downtime. fix problems as quickly as possible. build implementations correct the first time. Posted by: superdave1984 Yeah, what he said ^ Other than what csamuels wrote, I would suggest a psych class as well. You will deal with people every day. Some quite frankly I wonder how they get to work by themselves. You have to fix or help them fix the issue without making them feel stupid. If possible. Most folks are kind of intimidated by the computer anyway and panic when it doesn't do what they want it to do or what it did yesterday. It's really hard to keep somebody from feeling like an idiot when you drive 16 miles to their location (because they can't or won't understand what you are trying to tell them over the phone) to inform them they have been hitting the monitor power button insead of the PC power button. You MUST have patience. And get used to hearing two phrases 1: "I forgot my password" and 2: "My printer won't print" Posted by: MrCoffee Had to answer this one :) 10.
