It will ask to install the Yahoo toolbar during the installation, select no if you do not want this toolbar to be installed on your system. The software has five different main functions which are Spam & Worm Protection, Spyware & Intruder Protection, Profiling & Tracking Protection, Betray & Evidence Protection and Encryption Services. The three first functions include a whitelist that contains email addresses, urls and cookies of sites that will always be accepted once you add them to the software. Whitelists are a great way to make sure that important mails and websites will never get blocked. I´am not able to list all of its functions and some are actually not even implemented yet. The software will offer for instance a anonymous proxy switch, a worm hunter and an email examiner. It still offers some valuable tools like a windows, office and browser cleaner, a password generator and a popup blocker. It should work with every browser and email client, that is at least what they state in their faqs. This freeware might be worth a look if you are looking for a software that covers most of your security and privacy needs. Let me know if you try it out and how you like it. http://www.secretmaker.com/ Posted by: Warez Monster Dr.Divx is a freeware utility that is able to transcode many different formats to divx. Formats include mpeg1, mpeg2, mov, vob, avi and flv. The first question that comes to your mind is probably why you would like to convert those formats to divx. The most prominent reason that comes to my mind is that some dvd players are capable to play divx movies but not mov or flv for example. Everyone who has such a player will love this option. It will use the current divx encoder to transcode the movies and automatically detects a new version if installed. There is no hassle with codecs and the like which is great. If you have a divx encoder installed it is working. Dr. Divx supports multiple audio tracks and subtitle tracks as well. The video transcoder is currently available for Microsoft Windows but will soon be available for Mac OS and Linux. http://labs.divx.com/DrDivX Posted by: Warez Monster It is very handy to have a linux live CD at hand when your system crashes and your operating system of choice does not boot anymore. This could mean that either the software or the hardware fails to load the operating system. You should try to diagnose the problem with a live CD before thinking of reinstalling the operating system or exchanging parts of the hardware. The ultimate boot CD offers you all the tools you need to find the errors and correct them. Tools are sorted in categories like hard disk management, boot managers, file tools, CPU and memory tests and bios tools. Most categories offer several tools for diagnosis and repair, the hard disk categories for instance offer tools from the various hard disk manufacturers like Seagate and Maxtor. You find anti-virus tools on the disk that can be used to check the system safely for malware. A great feature of the ultimate boot CD is that the CD is not only available as a linux distribution but that instructions exist how you could create a windows live CD from it. Most users tend to “fear” linux and might not be willed to use such a linux live CD, this should be different for a windows live CD. The website offers customisation instructions and even CDR labels for the disk. They have a extensive help section as well, if you get stuck visit the website again and read the common questions and answers as well as the bugs and workaround section. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ Posted by: Warez Monster I´am always leaving my computer for the time that it is defragmenting the hard drives, it takes way to long to sit there and wait for the process to finish. The defragmentation seems to take forever to finish on my three hard drives and I was looking for a way to speed things up a bit and reduce the time that I could not work with my computer. SpeeDefrag is the answer to my calls and probably to yours as well. Instead of defragmenting the hard drives with Microsoft Windows running on the background it restarts the computer and defragments the hard drives before Windows starts. This means it is able to utilize more resources for the task and that there are less background processes from windows running who might interfere with the defragmentation. You may opt that SpeeDefrag will shutdown or restart your computer once the defragmentation process has finished. SpeeDefrag automatically detects the hard drives, better partitions, that are connected at the moment and gives you the option to select each one to be defragmented. http://vcsoftwares.com/SpeeDefrag.html Posted by: Warez Monster This freeware tool is so sweet. I hate when dozens of windows clutter my precious taskbar space with no means to minimize them to the tray. I especially don´t like it when I´am not using the program for a long time but want to keep it running, for example transcoding large video streams. RbTray has only one purpose, but this one is a really useful one. It adds the Minimize to Tray command to every window option. I was able to minimize firefox, my ftp program and many more to the system tray. Encountered none that rejected to be minimized to the tray. Oh, it has one more feature. It also adds a always on top option to every window. The freeware can be downloaded from the website link given above, the download is really slow but thankfully the tool is not that big. Options are available after installing the program. http://rbtray.narod.ru/ Posted by: Warez Monster I have lots of bookmarks, not only in Firefox but also in Internet Explorer and Opera. It happens sometimes when I want to open a bookmark that I have not used for a while that the link points to a dead url which makes me search for mirrors or cached versions of the page. Ultimately I remove the link from the favorites because it is dead and most likely will not be revived at a later date. Would not it be great if there was a tool that checked the bookmarks automatically for dead links and duplicate entries ? A tool that would be able to read and check bookmarks in many browsers such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Mozilla ? I assume you answered the above questions with yes, if that is the case AM-Deadlink might be the exact program you would like to take a look at. Am-Deadlink is freeware, just download and install it on your computer. You have a drop down menu on the upper left corner when you start the program where you chose the browser you want to check. You sometimes have to navigate to the bookmarks folder of that browser manually and select it, but that should not be a big deal. Now you can check the appearing bookmarks and find duplicates. If the link is dead a 404 error most likely appears in the line of the bookmark. You can now delete that bookmark if you like or leave it there and check later again. Those errors also appear when a website moves host and that process has not finished yet for example. It is always a good idea to check it more often before you delete an entry. AM-Deadlink has the ability to backup the bookmarks as a zip file, there is unfortunatly no option to import bookmarks from one browser to the other directly. You may export bookmarks in a universal format and import them later through your browser though. http://aignes.com/deadlink.htm Posted by: Warez Monster Microsoft Groupbar is a freeware application for windows xp that offers an enhanced window management capability. Groupbar does not need to be installed, just download the file and start GroupBar.exe. The tool automatically appears as a sidebar on the left of your screen but can be placed in the other three corners as well. The sidebar displays all running applications, you are free to sort them anyway you like. This does not seem to be a great enhancement until now, groubar has one functionality that makes it a pretty usefull program. You can group applications, for instance firefox, an email client and your instant messenger. Once grouped together they can all be started / minimised at once from the sidebar. Great if you have certain applications that you do use together. Groupbar remembers window positions and size of the tools which happens to be another nice feature. It is also possible to create snapshots of certain states. You can preview previous snapshots and restore your work state later. Snapshots are either temporary or permanent. Permanent snapshots can be created with the Create persistend snapshot function. http://research.microsoft.com/vibe/groupbar.aspx Posted by: Warez Monster I have been recieving an email lately asking for a freeware utility that would be able to convert most known video formats into each other. When I saw the webpage for Super the first time I was reminded of that email and thought it was a big coincidence that I found such a converter that fast. The tool stands out for several reasons, first it is freeware which is always good, second it does not require that you install the needed codecs - it has all codecs on board. The website looks really messy at first glance and novice users might have a hard time finding what they are looking for, the download link is at the bottom of that page which opens a new html page, scroll to the end again and you see four download mirrors. I know that you want to know about the supported formats before you believe my bold claims, here we go: Video formats: 3gp/3g2 (Nokia,Siemens,Sony,Ericsson) asf, avi (DivX,H263,H263+,H264,XviD,MPEG4,MSmpeg4 etc..) dat, fli, flc, flv (used in Flash) mkv, mpg (Mpeg I,Mpeg II) mov (H263,H263+,H264,MPEG4 etc..) mp4 (H263,H263+,H264,MPEG4) ogg qt, rm, ram, rmvb, str (Play Station) swf (Flash) ts (HDTV) viv, vob, wmv Audio format: ac3, amr, mp2, mp3, mp4, mpc, ogg, ra, wav, wma You might be asking about the practical use of this video converter, let me give you some examples. If you are having a mobile device like a cellphone, a psp or a nintendo ds you know that they only support certain formats that they can playback. You can convert your normal videos or audio files into those formats to play them on your mobile devices. You could for example convert the audio, and only the audio, of a movie or show into a format that your mobile plays. You are also able to create VCDs, SVCDs and DVDs from other formats which makes it possible to burn those newly created files with a tool like Nero for instance to watch the movie on your tv. I don´t like watching large movies on my computer, it does not have the right feeling I think and I like to convert movies to watch them on tv. A short note about the requirements: Win98 or higher 1800 Mhz cpu 512 MB ram 20 GB hard drive I suppose super will also run on PCs that do not meet the requirements but considerably slower than on those who do. http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html Posted by: Warez Monster Hard drives are critical components in every personal computer. They store the data that you are working with and a failure or defect could lead to data loss sometimes without the possibility of recovering the data. Backups are of course a good idea but monitoring the hard drives perfomance is another method to check if it is likely that your hard drives might be at the end of their life cycle. HDD Health monitors some of the important key factors of modern hard drives such as temperature, read and seek error rates and performance. If one variable reaches a critical value you are informed by HDD Health and should take counter measures. The first would be making a reliable backup of your hard drive, the second thinking about ways to fix the problematic values. If the temperature for example is reported to be of critical value you should think of improving the air flow of your case, get hard drive coolers, add more fans or move from air cooling to water cooling. Other errors such as read write errors prove to be more complex. They could be temperature related of course but if the temperature is not critical it is an unlikely reason. So, the main advantage you get is to recieve a report before a crash or hard drive failure occurs giving you time to react and backup your data. http://www.panterasoft.com/ Posted by: Warez Monster I bet you all know the google image search service which displays only thumbails of pictures that are related to your search terms. You load the full sized image by clicking on one of the thumbnails and may save that one manually to your hard drive. This process is taking a long time if you for example would like to save the first 100 results because they look all so nice.. An alternative to the manual process is using a freeware application like googlegrab which automatically saves the full size images to a newly created folder that is named after the search terms. The program is pretty straight forward. Enter a search term and click search. Googlegrab does everything else. It creates a folder, saves all images to that folder. You can set some options as well. First, you can limit the downloads to x pictures, the default is 1000. Then you can opt ot download only pictures of a certain size, you can turn downloads for five sizes on or off. (XXL, XL, L, M and S). Then you can turn off child save searches which is probably a good idea and see a preview of the current image. Googlegrab is available for PC and Mac, great tool. http://www.sas21.de/apps/googlegrab/ Posted by: Warez Monster Sometimes it´s the small changes that make a big difference. I´am writing a lot of articles as you all know and I find it sometimes hard to locate the cursor in my articles, especially when it is late in the evening and I´am tired. Vippy is a small utility that does only one thing: It changes the color of the cursor to red. Take a look at the image to see the difference. The great thing about vippy is that it should work in nearly all windows applications including Microsoft Word and Open Office. As you can cleary see on the image to the left the top cursor is rather hard to locate while the red cursor in the second text is way easier to spot. After installing the only 50K freeware you see the current active cursor which is the windows default cursor. You can change this cursor into a small, medium or large custom red cursor which additionally can be displayed in bold. I changed mine to medium and bold and it is working like a charm. The red cursor will be activated when you hover your mouse over text. Which means that the blinking cursor at the end of the current letter is still black. I´ve tested it so far in firefox, microsoft word, opera and notepad. It did change the cursor in all programs but Opera to the red cursor. Let me know if you find this one helpful or a waste of time.. http://officeboosters.com/vippy.htm Posted by: Warez Monster I can see the first question coming up pretty quickly. Special shortcuts, what´s that ? I had some trouble finding a heading that describes tooler and I decided to stick with the description that the author of this nice little tool used. Tooler is able to create shortcuts in three locations: desktop, startmenu, programs menu. You can create eleven different shortcuts with it that might speed up things a little bit. You can create shortcuts to run, disable or enable screensavers, eject and close the cdrom tray, set the volume, turn of the monitor, disable mouse and keyboard, shutdown and restart your system and finally logout the current user. No one needs all of those shortcuts but some might come in handy for some of you. I especially like the shortcuts that eject and close the cdrom tray, great if you use tools that automatically eject the cdrom tray. (like nero, after burning a cd or dvd). Tooler is freeware and only 50K in size. Just unpack it somewhere and run it. No installation, no new registry entries, great little tool. http://www.tooler.aionel.net/ Posted by: Warez Monster Are you looking for a free lightweight alternative to Microsoft Word and Open Office ? Are you sick of endless loading times and office suits that occupy hundreds of megabytes of space on your hard drive ? AbiWord might be worth a closer look if you answered those questions with yes. What´s so different about AbiWord that I would recommend it ? There are several reasons, first it is only about five megabytes in size which is a good prerequisite for a fast loading application. AbiWord is open source and available on many plattforms including Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac Os, FreeBSD and others. The open source tool is able to read and write all important formats like Microsoft Word, Open Office, Word Perfect, Rich Text, web documents and more. This is ideal if you want to import files from different sources and work with them at. Plugins enhance the functionality tremendously, there are currently more than 50 free plugins and tools available as additional downloads from the AbiWord website. http://www.abisource.com/download/ Posted by: Warez Monster When I bought my first mp3 player years ago I had to somehow transfer the music from my cd collection to my computer. I was lucky enough to find CDex pretty fast and I stick with it since then. It offers everything that I demand from an CD ripper, it´s fast, it checks CDDB for album and title information and is able to save the music in many formats including mp3 and wav. All you need is the program itself and the dll lame_enc.dll which you can download from rarewares. You should check the options before you start your first ripping process. Select the Lame Encoder as your Encoder and define a bitrate for the mp3 files that you want to save. You need to add an email to the Remote CDDB tab if you want to use this service. This email is not checked at all, you might want to use a temporary email address. After that you put a music cd into your drive, CDex will retrieve the information but not the title and album information automatically. You need to select CDDB and click on Read Remote CDDB. All titles and album information will be retrieved and displayed. Once this is done you extract one or all tracks of the CD as compressed audio (mp3 for instance). All titles will be saved to a dir defined in the options and you are ready to transfer the files to your mobile player. It can´t be easier than that. Let me know if you are using a different tool. http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/ http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html Posted by: Warez Monster Most people use easy to remember passwords that are as easy to brute force. The name of your wife, your birthday, a combination of personal data or simple words like password or god. This might be convenient and nice as long as no one tries to break into your account. When this is happening you will quickly realize that insecure passwords are a big security thread. Password Generator (click here for a windows version) makes sure that the password that is generated will be hard to brute force and impossible to guess because it is not related to your personal life in any way. The entire process takes place in three steps. The first step involves choosing a password size ranging from 32bit to 2048bit which influences the password length. The author suggests using 40-72 bits for normal security and 90-128 bits for high security. 72 bits for instance means a password with 12 chars, 1024 bits would mean a password with unbelievable 171 chars. After choosing the password size you have to type some random keys (longer for greater sizes) which are used to compute a password. The last step displays the password. The default encoding is base64, you can also opt for hexadecimal or pass phrases which influence the length of the password. You might have a problem remembering the password and I suggest you use a program that saves the password safely. I wrote a little article about a secure password manager pins which you might want to try. http://sourceforge.net/projects/pwgen/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/pwgen-win/ Posted by: Warez Monster You are leaving traces on the computer you are working with unless you are using a live cd or software that runs from an usb stick. Traces are everywhere and it´s rather hard to clean every possible trace by hand. Disk Cleaner is a nice little freeware application that helps you in this task. Once installed it scans your computer for items in temporary folders, browser cache and recent documents for instance. Almost thirty locations, each showing the number of files and the complete size of all those files. I think it´s interesting that the program lists all three browsers that I use (opera, firefox and ie) each with separate entries for disk cache, cookies, history and more. Cleaning is easy as well. Mark the locations that you want cleaned and select clean afterwards. If a path is cleaned it will disappear from the disk cleaner listing and reappear again if new files are discovered. Nice little tool with great impact on security. http://www.diskcleaner.nl/ Posted by: Warez Monster The multimedia player Bsplayer has been released in the new version 2.0 today. I was using previous versions of bsplayer and was really satisfied with it. It had some minor problems and I made the switch to VLC media player and plan on using that one even though the new version of bsplayer has been released. The player supports most used multimedia formats like avi, mp(e)g, divx, xvid, asf, wmv and many audio formats like mp3 and wav. It supports subtitles, drag and drop, resolution changing, multipled audio streams and is able to capture frames. If you are still using media player you should try and make the switch, it´s faster and better than it. http://www.bsplayer.org/en/bs.player/home/ Posted by: technotmuch Can anyone tell me how to install Flash player 9 if I dont have admin rights was able to instal google earth but I cant find a way around the admin rights. any tricks or versions of the flash player 9 that doest check for admin rights and automaticly downloads like other programs eg. Google earth Posted by: DerekGoodson Can anyone please point me in a direction of good/easy backup software? Posted by: Warez Monster Syncback SE ^^ Posted by: Warez Monster Several security software solutions like xp-antispy exist for Windows XP and Security & Privacy Complete is one of them. The open source product offers to change security and privacy related settings in Windows XP. Everything is accessible from the main window and categorized in the following way: System, Internet Explorer 6, Media Player, Security Options, Services and Mozilla Firefox. All settings can be changed right from the main screen which is a great way of changing them fast. Inexperienced users will have troubles with this program because most settings are not self-explanatory, for instance should you enable or disable Null Sessions ? Moving your mouse over an entry displays a short explanation which helps most of the time but not always. The first step with this program should be to use the Create a backup function to be on the safe side and be able to restore to previous settings if something goes bad. It gives you access to some features that other security tools have not implemented such as making the hosts file read-only or to disable ping links in Firefox. I know that most settings can be changed in other tools as well which means that you do not need this tool if you have been using a different tool in the past. One advantage of Security & Privacy complete is that you do not have to install it, just unpack and go. If you are looking for a tool that supplements your usual security tool I suggest you take a look. Worst thing that can happen is that you wasted some minutes downloading and running the file. Best thing that you found some settings that you changed. http://sourceforge.net/projects/cmia/ Posted by: baronvongogo great program, as usual warez you are the king of software and news updates. Posted by: Warez Monster While downloading the latest version of the bittorrent client BitComet it came to my mind that I never wrote an article about this excellent client here at ghacks. I have written about Azureus and uTorrent which I have tried both but not about the client that I’m personally using because I think it is the best one of the bunch. I like BitComet because of several reasons: speed, usability and because it is using low resources. I do know that uTorrent qualifies for those reasons as well but I encountered an error at the time I was using uTorrent which had no fix and I therefor had to make a change. BitComet has a clean interface which uses a split screen to display the information. The left side contains the navigation with entries such as Downloading and Downloaded and links to some torrent websites as well. I have never used those links but it could be useful for some. The right pane displays the files that you are currently downloading or seeding with typical information like size, speed and time. It would be a good idea to visit the options before you start using BitComet, you find them in Options > Preferences. If you know what you are doing you should tweak your connection settings and change the default download location. BitComet has a CPU usage of about 2-3% even when I’m downloading many big files at once. Ram usage stays between 50-60 all the time, less if you download smaller files. http://www.bitcomet.com/ Posted by: wadewej nice job, thank u all. Posted by: Warez Monster http://www.eigelb.at/?sID=67 this very cool mouse pointer / time waster that is surprisingly addicting for being such a simple concept. There are several different versions of the tool and there are even downloadable versions. The reason I even got the cleaner is that on bootup my computer halts because the system.ini files refers to these two missing .vxd files which some program is requesting. Seeing as how I have nill experience in manually cleaning the registry I don't know what to do or how to find the offending program. Any tips? I want to automate a lot of tasks and failure to complete the bootup would probably prevent this when the sysytem isn't on standby, but completely powered down. Thanks. It can change hundreds of system and 3-rd party application settings which are not usually accessible through the operating system UI, or are very deeply hidden. Compared to the hundreds of so called "tweakers", TweakFX has some interesting key features: TweakFX is plugin based Generally, a plugin is a small program which "plugs" to a bigger one and extends its functionality. Usually, one of the main characteristics of a plugin is that almost everyone with a programming experience can create it, even if he doesn't work in the company developed the "big" program. Creating a plugin for TweakFX doesn't even require any programming experience! Thus, TweakFX is in constant development. TweakFX just works. And you know how! Ok, we saw that everyone can extend the functionality of the program with these plugins. Here comes another plus -- plugins are open source. They are designed as a simple Web pages opened into the build-in Web browser. If you are curious what do they do -- you can simply open them in Notepad and see! Apply all settings to a number of computers When you change some setting(s), TweakFX can save what you've changed as a registry entries file (.reg) and you can easily re-apply the setting(s) onto another computer without having to install TweakFX. Also, in the .reg file, Tweak FX will save the old setting value for you -- so later on, you can discard your changes. Manage remote systems TweakFX provides an additional server program -- you have to run it once on a remote computer, and knowing its IP address, you can easily connect to it and manage it just like you are used to managing your system.
