Did anyone post ERD commander by Winternals. They have an emergency version which is basically the regular version for 5 days which is usually enough time to backup a who hard drive onto another or an external unit. Very good piece of software....It got me out a bad $mft jam recently.....I do recommend buying it though and supporting the developers....

I found something recently that says the author of ImgBurn is the original author of DVD Decrypter. I don't know that I believe it, but it would certainly explain a lot of things.

Also, here are a couple of other DVD ripping programs.

PowerPacker will help a user create a Multiboot Windows XP disk with or without DriverPacks. It will do almost everything for you, even hex edit the files needed to be hexed, create the boot directory, boot menu, etc. It makes creating multiboot XP disks a breeze.
This program was made with the BTS DriverPacks in mind. Basically it does just about everything you need to do to add a windows XP load to your MultiBoot Disk.
It will gather the needed files from your source XP CD and put them into a directory you specify. It will grab the DriverPack Files and install them. It will create a boot directory for your load and even hex edit the files that need to be HEXED to allow you to boot to it. It will put the needed info into the boot list so you can select your XP load. It makes testing the DriverPacks very easy!!!

it appears that Crap Cleaner is not on the list.

Crap Cleaner is a freeware utility that scans your computer for unnecessary files and registry problems allowing you to increase your computer's free disk space, speed and reliability.

currently version 1.27.260

available at http://www.ccleaner.com/

apparently in recent releases ccleaner added a function that can actually decrease your computers speed and as such should be unchecked

It looks like Getright isn't a freeware utility

"Limitations Some features-disabled "

It's basically freeware....if you don't buy then something pops up every like 5gb of downloads and asks you if you want to buy. Just click no.

WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for Microsoft Windows (all current variants).

Release Notes
The version 1.1.2 has been released on 2005-07-16. Users may want to have a look at the release notes.

A re-release of version 1.1.2 bundled as an installer is now (2005-12-11) available.
Although the installer file is smaller than the each of the other two binary packages, it contains both Ansi and Unicode binary files.
The installer will care for creation of shortcuts as well as for later removal from the "Add or Remove Programs" entry. If you run in one of the supported locales, the installer will automatically pre-select your language by default.
Warning: the installer is considered still BETA! Please report any issues.
Note: the installer may not work on the very first edition of Windows 95. All Windows 95 users please provide us with feedback on that issue.

Features
WinDirStat reads the whole directory tree once and then presents it in three useful views:

The directory list, which resembles the tree view of the Windows Explorer but is sorted by file/subtree size,
The treemap, which shows the whole contents of the directory tree straight away,
The extension list, which serves as a legend and shows statistics about the file types.

http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

SpeedFan is a freeware program that monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can even access S.M.A.R.T. info for those hard disks that support this feature and show hard disk temperatures too, if supported. SpeedFan supports SCSI disks too. SpeedFan can even change the FSB
on some hardware (but this should be considered a bonus feature). At the lowest level, SpeedFan is an hardware monitor software that can access digital temperature sensors, but its main feature is that it can change fan speeds (depending on the capabilities of your sensor chip and your hardware) according to the temperatures inside your pc, thus reducing noise. Several sensors, like Winbond's and the AS99127F support fan speed changing, as well as others from Maxim, Myson, Analog Devices, National Semiconductor and ITE, but the hardware manufacturer must have connected the relevant pins to some additional, yet trivial, circuitry. This means that if you have, say, a Winbond W83782D on a BP6 then you're ok, but not every motherboard with such an hardware monitor chip will be able to change fan speeds. From one of the very first hardware monitor chips that could be found in standard PCs, the National Semiconductor LM75 (and all of its clones, like the Philips NE1617 and the Philips NE1618 or the Maxim MAX1617) or the Analog Devices ADM1021, such chips have been greatly improved, both in their precision and in their capabilities. Current chips can monitor fan speeds, voltages and change fan speeds bu using PWMs (Pulse Width Modulation). Some chips can even be programmed to vary fan speeds without any additional software intervention. If your BIOS was programmed to setup such chips this way you can still try to use SpeedFan's Advanced Configuration to revert to manual (software controlled) mode. Winbond W83697HF, Analog Devices ADT7463, SMSC EMC6D102, ITE IT8712F, National LM85C and Maxim MAX6650 are very good candidates. Some SuperIO chips include temperature sensors too. SpeedFan can automatically detect them and use their features. SpeedFan can find almost any hardware monitor chip connected to the 2-wire SMBus (System Management Bus, a subset of the I2C BUS) Serial Interface and to the ISA BUS and works fine with Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, 2003 and Windows XP. It works with Windows 64 bit too. It can be minimized to the tray and is compatible with Motherboard Monitor 5.

http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/

Setting it up
First, make sure you're running Windows 2000, XP, or newer. But not those fancy 64-bit versions, cause it doesn't work. I'd love to make it work - just send me your spare 64-bit PC!
Download the installer.
Run the downloaded file to start the install wizard. It has boring template text, so just keep clicking Next.
Now the Folder Size column is available to Explorer, but Explorer isn't displaying it yet. Open an Explorer window in Details view.
Right click on the column headers to see a list of columns you can add. Choose Folder Size.
Now we can replace the existing Size column with the new Folder Size column. Right click on the column headers and uncheck the Size column. Drag the Folder Size column header to where Size used to be.
Make this the default view for all folders. Go to Folder Options from the Tools menu. In the View tab, click Apply to All Folders.
Changing settings
Look in the Windows Control Panels to find the Folder Size control panel. If you're in the confusing Category View in XP, where it says Pick a category, click on Switch to Classic View in the left-hand pane. And then view as Icons. Isn't that better?

Use the control panel to change the way sizes are displayed. Also stop the service to stop any background activity.

Removing
So it crashes every once in a while, and slows down your computer. That's no reason to uninstall it. Well, if you really want to, use the Add/Remove Programs control panel. You'll have to manually fix the columns in Explorer too.

Created by Microsoft
Phishing (pronounced "Fishing") is one of the fastest growing threats on the Internet and a form of identity theft. It refers to high-tech scams using phony web sites with actual brands designed to steal valuable personal information such as usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, and Social Security numbers.

Phishers use many tactics including creating and sending links to fraudulent Web sites or e-mail messages that appear to be valid in an attempt to fool you into submitting personal, financial, and password information.

Often an e-mail will be sent containing a link taking you to a fraudulent Web site appearing to be valid (like your bank or mortgage company) so that you'll enter your personal information. By using well-known, trusted brand names and logos, phishers are able to convince you to respond to them.

The Phishing Filter Add-in offers access to a new dynamic online service, updated several times an hour to warn you and help protect your personal information from these fraudulent websites by:

Scanning websites you visit and warning you if they are potentially suspicious.
Dynamically checking the web sites you visit with up to the hour online information via an online service run by Microsoft and blocking you from sharing personal information if a site is a known phishing website.

Version: 3.0.4702.0

Requires Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.

Your use of this Add-In is subject to the terms and conditions of the end user license agreement (either from Microsoft or some other entity) under which you have previously licensed the MSN Search Toolbar Software. By downloading, installing or otherwise using this Add-In, you agree to be bound by the MSN Search Toolbar end-user license agreement.

By downloading and using this add-in, website addresses will be sent to Microsoft to be checked against a list of reported phishing websites. Information received will not be used to personally identify you.

Microsoft released new technology Tuesday that it says would allow users to take existing road maps and satellite imagery, and overlay it with specialized maps to create imagery for their specific needs. The technology has been made available as a free download called MapCruncher.

The project was the brainchild of Microsoft researchers Jon Howell and Jeremy Elson. The two, which are avid cyclists, thought of the idea after looking at a cycling map of King County in Washington State for routes to work.

However, one of the routes appeared to be interrupted by a freeway. After using TerraServer, they discovered that the freeway could be crossed via a pedestrian bridge. "In fact," Elson says, "I use this route all the time now."

What is the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows?

UBCD4Win is a bootable CD which contains software that allows you to repair/restore/diagnostic almost any computer problem. All software included in UBCD4Win are freeware utilities for Windows®. UBCD4Win is based on Bart's PE©. Bart's PE© builds a Windows® "pre-install" environment CD, basically Windows® booted from CD. With network support, the ability to modify NTFS volumes, recover deleted files, create new NTFS volumes, scan hard drives for viruses, etc. this project includes almost everything you need to repair your system problems. There are many types of utilities included that allow you to recover and/or repair a damaged system. Please visit the "List of Tools" page for a complete list of what is included in the latest version of the project.

There are several requirements for building this CD which can and may make it difficult for novices to successfully build the project. Please understand that these requirements and restrictions are due to copyright laws, etc. When starting this project I wanted it to be as easy as possible. I wanted it to be a simple ISO file download just like the original Ultimate Boot CD. I had to weigh the ease of build and functionality very carefully. After much thought and research I decided that Bart's PE© was the best way to accomplish this task. That decision required a different type of build and more steps for the end user. Yes more complicated, but I prefer to think of these additional steps in a positive way. I provide detailed instructions, email support, and the forum for help. Inexperienced users will feel a sense of accomplishment and gain knowledge when they successfully build the CD.

How did this project start?
This project was started because of requests from members of the original Ultimate Boot CD yahoo group. Several members wanted a "Windows®" version of the Ultimate Boot CD. After a few days no one had volunteered! So I decided that I had enough time to do this and it was my way to give something back to the computing community.

April 2, 2004, I created the UBCDWindows group. The first few weeks consisted mostly of discussions on how to accomplish this. We had to decide what should be included and searched for great stuff. After searching and reading a lot of web pages I finally decided that Bart's PE© was the best option.

One of the first issues I saw was one of the requirements for Bart's PE©, an XP CD with SP1. I personally had upgraded to XP right when XP came out so I did not have SP1 on my XP CD. I found several solutions for this issue but manually slipstreaming required several applications and would add more complexity to the project. I didn't like this added complexity but figured we would be able to do something about that. A better solution was created and is discussed below.

April 20, 2004 was an exciting day for me, I launched this site. After a few days of getting everything setup I realizing it was easy to setup a forum. So I announced the imminent closing of the yahoo group and requested that everyone join the forum. The project and forum have grown since it's start. Member registrations continue to grow and new teams have been created to help the development and support of the project.

The slipstreaming problem needed addressed so I contacted one of my friends that is a programmer. Raptor was glad to help and we started working together on creating a slipstreaming application. We worked pretty hard for several weeks creating the application. Well, he did all the coding work and I just helped with testing, minor details, and the dialogue for the prompts. On July 9, 2004 we released AutoStreamer 1.0!!

this is shareware but its good.

My Drivers enables easy and fast detection, backup and restore of all hardware device drivers currently on your system. Also, you can even find the latest drivers for your hardware and install them onto your computer. With just one or two mouse button clicks, you will have all your hardware devices extracted and backed-up to any folder you want. When you reinstall or upgrade your system, you can restore all drivers by clicking a button. Once after a reboot, all the drivers will be re-installed and will function well. You may also choose to backup a particular driver or all the drivers with an EXE automatic installer. If you have a particular item of hardware that is troublesome, just remove the driver with this software. It is especially useful to those who have lost their Driver Disk or Driver CD. My Drivers is able to clone the original driver installation. It is also capable of serving those people to find and install the appropriate and latest drivers for their hardware devices. My Drivers identifies almost all hardware devices, reported information includes device model, device manufacturer, chip/chipset manufacturer, OEM name, OEM vender. Over 58,600 drivers information and manufacturers and venders information are embedded with the software. You may easily find a driver that will work for a certain device by PnP ID fingerprint comparison, and a compatibility test will be performed before installing a driver that will be downloaded from the Internet. It is optional to create a floppy disc with My Drivers included for further driver management and hardware detection when no drivers are installed on Windows system. If you have a CD-R or CD-RW recorder or another partition, you might backup the entire set of driver files there. My Drivers will also backup the Favorites in Internet Explorer and Proxy Settings and provides a backup for settings for Outlook and Outlook Express.

WinTidy 2.0: Download It Here

WinTidy, Version 2.0
Platforms: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows XP
License Information:
PC Magazine programs are copyrighted and cannot be distributed, whether modified or unmodified. Use is subject to the terms and conditions of the license agreement distributed with the programs.

Description:
Save and restore desktop icon layouts.

When the icons on your Windows desktop are moved out of place, you have to hunt around to find what you want and you can't work as efficiently. The most common way to lose your icon layout is when switching to a smaller screen size. Windows shoves the off-screen icons into view, but doesn't put them back when you return to the larger screen size. WinTidy can remember your desktop layout and restore it for you. You can place the icons by hand, or use one of a dozen predefined layouts to automatically arrange icons in the order you choose. Save the arrangement as a named layout that you can restore at will, or associate it with the current screen size. When the screen size changes, WinTidy can automatically load the associated icon layout. And if you want to pack your icons into the smallest possible space, WinTidy will put the entire desktop into "small icons" mode. WinTidy 2 was written by Neil J. Rubenking, and first appeared in PC Magazine November 13, 2001 (v20n19). Source code is included.

Cbreak: Free commercial remover for AVI files
Remove commercials from recorded TV quickly and easily
By Nathan True (cbreak@nospam.co.uk@natnonspammingetrue.com)
NEW: Try the new powerful Skit Mode - it outputs a separate file for each segment of the show.
Download Cbreak right now! (or read on, whatever)
Cbreak is Free Software, but if you feel guilty making use of my blood and sweat without paying, you can make a small (or large!) donation.

About Cbreak
I always wanted one of those personal video recorders, like a Tivo or replayTV or something. With one of those, I could stop being a slave to the clock, always watching the time so that I could drop whatever I was doing to watch the latest episode of Cheat Commandos.
Needless to say, I was getting fed up with it. I had two choices: either give up TV altogether, or find some way to make my own Tivo equivalent.

Of course, I didn't really need to do that whole pause-live-TV thing. So I just went out to by a nice, cheap TV tuner card for my computer. With that in hand, I set up the included scheduler to record all my favorite shows (like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) to AVI files.

This all worked out nicely, for a while.

And then I got mad.

Well, not mad. Just annoyed that I had to always step through those blasted commercials.

I began searching for a way to have my computer remove the commercials for me. After a while, I realized that commercials are punctuated before and after with a little bit of black space in the video stream. That meant that I could make a program that scans for these and automatically drop commercials from video files.

That's when I said "Sweet!" and went to work.

When all was said and done, I had a highly useful commercial removal utility. The source code is included, so feel free to grab it and make modifications, redistribute, etc. I release the source code to you under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). I also ask that if you make any substantial additions to it, that you let me know so that I can put your variation on this page too.

How Cbreak works
Cbreak works by scanning every frame of a video file, taking note of any black frames in the video. It uses these frames to divide the video up into segments.
Once the segments are established, it has two modes that it can operate in:

In autonomic mode, it discards any video segments shorter than a certain time length (60 seconds is the default).
In manual mode, it plays each segment for you and asks whether it should keep it or not.
When all this is done, it copies the good video segments into a new AVI file along with the corresponding audio. Pretty great, huh? You can also change any of the parameters Cbreak uses to make decisions about a video stream, so it can be adjusted to your specific needs.
Using Cbreak
I included a batch file in the distribution that you can just drag and drop files onto, to have Cbreak run with default options. You can edit the batch file to set your own options.
Usage: cbreak infile outfile [options]

infile is the AVI file you want to remove commercials from.
outfile is the filename you want to save to.
Options: Switch Description
-m Activates manual mode. Without this, Cbreak defaults to autonomic mode.
-fx Sets frameskip; with this Cbreak will process every x frames. Default is 1 (no skipped frames).
-px Sets pixelskip; with this Cbreak processes every xth pixel in a frame. Default is 5.
-bx Sets black threshold. All pixels of a video frame must be darker than this in order to be considered a black frame. Default is 30, range is from 0 (see none) to 255 (see all) as black.
-lx Sets minimum segment length. Segments shorter than x frames will not even be considered. Default is 15.
-sx Sets autonomic segment length. In auto mode, segments shorter than x seconds will be dropped. No effect in manual mode. Default 60.
-dx Sets detection area. Cbreak will only process the center x% of pixels in a frame. This weeds out a lot of video noise that shows up in the top and bottom of frames. Default is 90.
-r Ignores saved segment data for that video file. Use this if you've changed detection parameters and want to run detection again.
-n Disable SNL filename detection (stops automatic skit mode from filenames starting with SNL)
-k Skit mode. This splits every scene to a separate file, useful for skit shows such as Saturday Night Live.

Closing remarks
Here's the download link again. Enjoy!

2X Application Server with free 5 app license.

---------------------------------
With 2X ApplicationServer for Windows Terminal Services companies can reap the benefits of thin client computing without having to switch the network infrastructure to a thin client OS.

Rather than deploying particular windows applications onto all your desktops, resulting in an administration and support nightmare, install the application on one central server and use 2X ApplicationServer for Windows Terminal Services to seamlessly publish the application onto remote desktops.

Users will never know that the application is running remotely and you will be able to manage the application from a single location! Transmitting just the screen updates rather than the client server data is often faster too.

One-click BackUp for WinRAR (OCB) allows you to create an unlimited number of presets containing dozens of settings. Each preset can be quickly loaded by clicking on a corresponding shortcut. The safety of your data is explained by the fact that the program doesn't use amateurish algorithms of file compression - OCB completely relies on WinRAR. WinRAR is a powerful and widespread file archiver. RAR files can usually compress content 8 to 30 percent better than ZIP ones, providing better file safety and secrecy. Most home and corporate users have already switched from ZIP to RAR, and it was a handy backup shell utility that they all waited for. It is completely compatible with the latest WinRAR version. It's capable of creating ZIP and RAR archives, as well as self-extracting EXE archives - you won't need any software at all to extract your files.

This installer includes both the Freeware and Shareware versions. The Freeware version does not have Anti-hooligan protection, Error notification messages to administrator's e-mail, Backup archives to network folders, Upload archives to FTP servers with auto-cleanup of unneeded files, Send archives as e-mail attaches, Complete modem dialup support for FTP/SMTP sessions, Write archives to CD-R/RW, or Remote control via Internet or LAN.

CUE Splitter is a freeware tool that splits a single big audio track, such as an album or a compilation, into relative individual audio tracks, using information contained in the associated "CUE" file. Sometimes you can find a big compressed audio file (for example MP3, APE, FLAC, OGG, WAV, WMA, etc.) equipped with a small "CUE" text file that contain informations about tracks title, artist and length. Usually these couple of files are generated by programs like EAC (Exact Audio Copy), CDRWin, BPM Studio, GoldWave or similar. With CUE Splitter you can obtain split audio track files without burning any CDR or decode/re-encode any audio data. Moreover, audio files are automatically named using a user-defined "file mask" string, its tags are filled with informations extracted from "CUE" file and, optionally, an M3U playlist file can be generated (option enabled by default). CUE Splitter is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

Windows only: Volumouse transforms your scroll wheel into a volume dial.

I listen to music all day long and it's a pain in the patoot to open up my volume control; it takes time and it's inconvenient. Volumouse allows you to set rules for your scroll wheel - you can customize it to turn your volume up or down via the Volumouse control panel.

I set mine for whenever I point to the taskbar. One scroll up or down, and I'm all done. When you're not within your specific control area (you've got a variety to choose from; taskbar, alt key, shift key, etc.), your mouse scroll function is not affected. Volumouse is a free download, Windows only.

Windows only: Freeware program HideWin lets you define a list of windows you want to be able to hide fast and completely from your desktop in the event that, for example, you're browsing our filthy sister-site Fleshbot and your boss/girlfriend/boyfriend/parent/kid walks in the room (you are incorrigible!).

To use HideWin, you'll want to select the List Visible Windows options and find the class, title, or both of the windows you'd like to hide (the rule from the screenshot, for example, will hide Fleshbot). This may not sound impressive, since it may seem like little more than a Windows+D/M shortcut or a minimize, but in fact HideWin actually hides the windows from the taskbar, so they're not just minimized - they actually disappear.

The real bummer of HideWin, though, is that there's no keyboard shortcut available to automatically hide/show your defined programs, so it's more of a two-click affair

You've got 342 pics from your trip to the Grand Canyon. Do you have about 3 extra hours to name them something other than 45929_23.jpg?

Me neither. Digital photography guru Derrick Story has a workaround:

First, open the folder and select View > Thumbnails.
Click the last picture in the folder you want to rename, hold down the Shift key, and click the first picture; this will select them all.
Right-click the first photo, and select Rename from the drop-down menu.
Windows XP will highlight the filename for the first photo, enabling you to give it a descriptive name.
After you type in the name, click the white space outside of the photo and watch as Windows applies the name with a sequential number to each picture in the folder.

Windows only: Freeware program GrideMove is a windows management application that lets you define grid templates on your desktop into which you can quickly snap your windows.

I work on a 21" widescreen monitor, so I rarely maximize windows to cover my full desktop. In fact, I find that working with two windows side-by-side is a major productivity boon for me. Windows only: Open source program myFairTunes6 is designed to remove the digital rights management (DRM) from your iTunes Music Store-purchased songs.

At the moment, myFairTunes is a pretty young app with room for improvement, but it does allow you to losslessly strip your tunes of Apple's DRM, and it's maturing very quickly. Like previously-mentioned FairUse4WM (a PlaysForSure/Windows Media DRM counterpart), use myFairTunes6 at your own risk. Personally, when DRM limits me beyond a certain point, I'm all for stripping - unfortunately the Man might not agree with me.

Intel Macs only: CrossOver Mac allows you to install and run several different Windows applications and games on your Mac.

Currently CrossOver Mac is available as a free beta, but once a final version is released, you're gonna have to pay for it (pre-order price is ~$40). CrossOver (like Boot Camp or Parallels) is yet another program taking advantage of the new Intel architecture, only rather than requiring an installation of Windows, it allows you to simply run Windows programs as though they were native to your Mac.

Currently the list of supported programs is limited to a small list of relatively popular applications (from MS Office to Photoshop to Half-Life), but the folks at CodeWeavers promise even broader support before the final release. — Adam Pash

Freeware program iPodulator downloads user-defined web sites or RSS feeds and syncs them to your iPod's notes.

When we first mentioned iPodulator about a year ago, it was a web-based app that created notes you had to manually move to your iPod. Now you can download iPodulator as a program that you run off your iPod (or at least that's what I did). You tell it what web sites/RSS feeds to track, and iPodulator checks the site and updates your iPod on regular intervals. Reading web sites on your iPod's notes may not be the nicest way to browse the internet offline, but it's better than nothing. iPodulator also offers quick creation of notes as well as some text-based games for your iPod that I haven't tried out yet. Requires Java.

Windows only: Freeware program tinySpell is a cross-application spell checking utility that warns you of misspelled words and suggests replacements when you press the autosuggest hotkey.

We've been showing you lots of cool spell check options built into Macs, but this little Windows app is by far my favorite. When you type a word that isn't in tinySpell's dictionary, you'll hear a beep (it defaults to the Windows default beep, but you can change it to whatever you want). Hit the autosuggest hotkey (by default Ctrl-;) and tinySpell will pop up a list of suggestions. The first highlighted entry on the list is generally the spelling you're looking for, so hit Enter and it will automatically replace the word.

I've only been playing with tinySpell for a short time this morning, but it's already on its way to must-have status. Give it a try and let me know what you think about it in the comments.

Writely is a word processing package that lets user to edit and publish a do***ent online. This package has been developed by Silicon Valley software developer, Upstartle that have been started by software engineer Sam Schillace, Steve Newman and Claudia Carpenter.

The good thing is if you use Writely, your do***ent will be stored online. So you can access it from any computer. From the spefications from the homepage we can conclude that Writely is a web word processor that let you:

>Share do***ents instantly and collaborate real-time.
>Pick exactly who can access your do***ents.
>Edit your do***ents from anywhere.
>Nothing to download — your browser is all you need.
>Store your do***ents securely online.
>Offsite storage plus data backup every 10 seconds.
>Easy to use.
>Clean, uncluttered screens with a familiar, desktop feel

Microsoft seems to be gone once again on a release day, since after Windows Defender, it's now Windows Desktop Search's turn to see its final version become available to the public. The new version features a bunch of new features over its second version, and much improved performance, along with faster indexing and improved file type support.

Any older version of Windows Desktop Search will be upgraded automatically to version 3.0, so there's no need to remove it before installing it.

MS Offering Vista Coupons
Reuters is reporting on Microsoft’s Vista coupon offer for new PC buyers. This confirms the rumors we reported here last month that MS will once again offer an upgrade coupon to new PC buyers, the same as they did with WinXP when it first launched.

The program allows customers who buy a PC running Windows XP to still be able to upgrade to Windows Vista when the new operating system becomes available in early 2007. A similar program is in place for Office 2007, also due out early next year to consumers.

I don't see anything illegal (warez) about it, or I might have missed something. The download links for some of the program are just linked to the software website. This website is no different than softpedia or majorgeeks.

Just those few listed are illegal, because they involve cracks, and you don't have to pay for the retail version. Maybe you should delete his post, or give him a friendly warning?

Well, practically free:

Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3)

Amazon S3 is storage for the Internet. It is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers.

Amazon S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites. The service aims to maximize benefits of scale and to pass those benefits on to developers.

Amazon S3 Functionality

Amazon S3 is intentionally built with a minimal feature set.

* Write, read, and delete objects containing from 1 byte to 5 gigabytes of data each. The number of objects you can store is unlimited.
* Each object is stored and retrieved via a unique, developer-assigned key.
* Authentication mechanisms are provided to ensure that data is kept secure from unauthorized access. Objects can be made private or public, and rights can be granted to specific users.
* Uses standards-based REST and SOAP interfaces designed to work with any Internet-development toolkit.
* Built to be flexible so that protocol or functional layers can easily be added. Default download protocol is HTTP. A BitTorrent(TM) protocol interface is provided to lower costs for high-scale distribution. Additional interfaces will be added in the future.

Pricing

* Pay only for what you use. There is no minimum fee, and no start-up cost.
* $0.15 per GB-Month of storage used.
* $0.20 per GB of data transferred.

Thank you for noticing that Talldude, I missed the Nero + Keygen part, I'll use your qoute as evidence and have him warn, but I don't expect him to come back anyways.

Backup Utilities -

Hi there, I just registered into this forum. This is my first post.
Anyway here are my contribution. Keep them coming!

Backup Utilities -
Cobian Backup
http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm

Free and Easy. I've used it for my own personal and also my office.

PC Audit -
Belarc
http://belarc.com/free_download.html

Generates detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, CIS (Center for Internet Security) benchmarks, and displays the results in your Web browser.

Just save the generated html and you won't have to worry what hardware driver you will be missing in the future. :)

Hope my contribution helps. Cheers!

DriveImage XML is an easy to use and reliable program for imaging and backing up partitions and logical drives.

The program allows you to:

Backup logical drives and partitions to image files
Browse these images, view and extract files
Restore these images to the same or a different drive
Copy directly from drive to drive
Schedule automatic backups with your Task Scheduler
Image creation uses Microsoft's Volume Shadow Services (VSS), allowing you to create safe "hot images" even from drives currently in use.

Images are stored in XML files, allowing you to process them with 3rd party tools. Never again be stuck with a useless backup!

Restore images to drives without having to reboot.

DriveImage XML runs under Windows XP Home, XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 only. The program will backup, image and restore drives formatted with FAT 12, 16, 32 and NTFS.

Since this program is currently distributed as freeware, we don't offer technical support for it. Please refer to the program's help file and documentation.

Please refer to the program's FAQ to see if your questions are already answered.

Who says Microsoft has not got broad shoulders. Witness this neat little app - BlueScreen Saver 3.2 - available for download from Microsoft's very own website.

As the blurb says:

One of the most feared colors in the NT world is blue. The infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) will pop up on an NT system whenever something has gone terribly wrong. Bluescreen is a screen saver that not only authentically mimics a BSOD, but will simulate startup screens seen during a system boot.
• On NT 4.0 installations it simulates chkdsk of disk drives with errors!

• On Win2K and Windows 9x it presents the Win2K startup splash screen, complete with rotating progress band and progress control updates!

• On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 it present the XP/Server 2003 startup splash screen with progress bar!

Bluescreen cycles between different Blue Screens and simulated boots every 15 seconds or so. Virtually all the information shown on Bluescreen's BSOD and system start screen is obtained from your system configuration - its accuracy will fool even advanced NT developers. For example, the NT build number, processor revision, loaded drivers and addresses, disk drive characteristics, and memory size are all taken from the system Bluescreen is running on.

Use Bluescreen to amaze your friends and scare your enemies!

Bluescreen runs on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 9x (it requires DirectX).

Could it be that Microsoft has developed an unexpectedly wry sense of humor? Or maybe it just wants to get its back on whiney sysadmins - (what the **** are they still doing with NT, anyway)

Or then again, perhaps Microsoft is not entirely self-aware. In July, the company bought SysInternals, the author of useful utilities such as "run a command on a network machine" or "output an event log as a CSV file". All Sysinternals utilities are now available for download on Microsoft's Technet site - including BlueScreen Saver 3.2.

We suspect this heirloom app won't stick around for long. But in the meantime ... good work, fellas!

Skype released the beta of the third iteration of its VoIP software today, as Microsoft turns its roving eye towards the free net call market.

The biggest innovation in Skype 3.0 is click-to-call, which eBay will be hoping will justify the $2.6bn it splurged on Skype. With the help of Google it means a single click on an ad will dial a sales monkey at the vendor.

Also new is the Skypecast™, which are basically moderated conference calls for up to 100 users. Elsewhere there's improvements to the interface and, er, new wallpapers.

Meanwhile, at a Microsoft conference in Tokyo on Monday, Steve Ballmer will have put the Redmond willies up the VoIP industry with his chilling statement that Microsoft "are going to enter the voice over IP market the beginning of next year".

Ballmer gave scant details, but the plan is to tie-up VoIP, IM, and email into one communications package. Microsoft already offers VoIP through Live Messenger, but sticking it in Outlook would make internet telephony much more visible to VoIP virgins.

After quite long delays on its release, since it was originally planned around the first beta release of Windows Live Messenger 8.1, Patchou finally put the final touches on the latest version of its popular Messenger Plus! add-on. Dubbed as version 4.10, the new version offers, among other improvements, support for 8.1's public beta, completely new translations, made from scratch, and a bunch of bug fixes.

There's no guarantee that this version will work with the final build, or eventual updates to the Beta of Windows Live Messenger 8.1. The improved version still works on Windows Live Messenger 8.0 and above, so it isn't limited to the upcoming 8.1 version.

The Windows Live Mail Desktop team has just announced yet another refresh of the increasingly popular mail reading application. This is the first refresh in over a month, and brings an outstanding number of improvements.

According to the developer team, this release brings "hundreds" bug fixes as well as many improvements to the user interface and a great increase in performance.

The first thing you will notice with this build is the nearly revamped user interface. It doesn't bring an entirely new UI, though it has undergone quite a 'Make Over'.

And good news for Windows Vista users, this new build now has the capabilities to migrate accounts from Windows Mail during the installation process.

TVU Networks have quietly released a new version of their acclaimed TVU Player which makes it possible to watch many popular tv stations from the internet. You can watch channels such as ESPN, ESPN2, FOX, NBC, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central using TVU Player. It does not deliver the same experience than watching the shows on a big tv though. Due to limited bandwidth the channels look fine if you keep the output window small, if you go fullscreen it becomes pretty blurry.

I’am using Teamspeak for several years now and would like to introduce it to you. Teamspeak makes it possible to voice chat over the internet, just like skype but without its phone abilities. Everyone using it needs the Teamspeak client software which is available for free on the Teamspeak homepage. The client software is available for windows, linux and mac. You also need a teamspeak server that can either be setup on one of the computers that is also running a client version or on a dedicated /or virtual webserver.

Installation of the Teamspeak server is really easy but differs depending on your operating system. You simply install and run it on a Windows operating system. Admin and Superadmin passwords are shown at first start and you have to use them to login into the web interface and configure the server. (login details are saved in the file server.log, you can look them up there if you forgot to write them down).

You find a detailed instruction for linux at the teamspeak homepage - the process involves adding a user teamspeak, using wget to download the current version, unpacking that version and running the start script.

The web admin looks the same for windows and linux, there is no server version of teamspeak for mac.

Select Servers in the admin interface, one server is already running and you should select this one to change the configuraton of it. Server Settings displays some values that you can change: For instance the Server name, the welcome message, you can password protect the server here and define the maximum amount of users that can connect to it.

You also enable the codecs in that menu and are free to change the port the server is running on. You are free to add users from the server settings menu or from the client version directly.

Now, logout, start the Teamspeak client and select Connection, Connect from the menu. Right-Click Servers, Add a new Server and enter the login details of that server. Please note that you need at least the password of the server if the admin protected it with a password. This would mean you login anonymous using the server password. The other method would be that you are a registered user on that server and login registered with a username and password (and no server password).

Click connect and the connection to the server should be made. If you login using your admin account you are free to add channels to the server, maybe something like Chat, Game 1, Game 2, AFK. Big servers with lots of users (clans for instance) normaly have one folder for every game and then subfolders for that game. One example would be WoW as the top folder and the subfolders instance 1, instance 2, battlefield, grinding, level, raid, crafting, afk. You may add as much folders as you like.

Channels may be for registered users only, may be moderated, may use different codecs and may be password protected. Everything is highly customisable as you can see.

Teamspeak does not use lots of ressources making it ideal for multiplayer games but also for general voice communication. The website has a big forum that should help if you run into troubles setting it up or running it.

If you want to make a screenshot by using the print key on your keyboard you have to paste the copied screen to an image manipulation program like gimp and save it from within that program. Would not it be much easier if pressing the print key would immediatly result in one of the following actions specified by the user: a) copy to clipboard (default behavior) b) sent to printer and print the screenshot and c) automatically save the screenshot on your hard drive.

Purrint is one of those tremendously useful freeware applications that increase productivity. You have to configure it after downloading and unpacking, no installation required, no registry settings and the like. You are free to select a default action when you press the print key, purrint makes it possible to perform more than one of the three mentioned actions. You could for instance opt to save the screenshot to a file and print it at the same time.

Files will be saved either as bmp, jpg, gif or png - you will have to specify a location, the format and the name of the files (a number is added so that nothing gets overwritten). Purring sits in your system tray and can be configured from there. If you want to use it all of the time you will have to move it into your autostart folder.

Many websites post random images every time their page is reloaded, webcams come to my mind as well that load a new image once every few minutes. Saving a sequence of images is really painful if you do it manually. You have to click reload, save the image, reload, save the image. SeqDownload is a nice little freeware application that automates this task for you, download the program from the link above and unpack it into a directory of your choice - there is no installation involved, run it right fom the location you unpacked the files to.

The first start shows a empty table, click on new to add a new automated task. You will have to provide a url of either the image that is constantly reloaded or of a webpage that displays a random image. Select the interval that the image will be downloaded and compared to the existing ones, choose a format for the saved images, select an extension and finally click on create new item.

SeqDownloader automatically downloads the image in the interval that you have specified during creation. If a new image appears it will be saved according to your rules. If no new image exists nothing will be saved

The classic Windows desktop looks really boring, you can set a background image, edit some icons and enable some effects. Samurize has actually two benefits. First it is a system monitor, it displays information about your system, information that you specify like free disk space, your current IP address or a weather forecast. Besides that it enhances the desktop by applying a skin to the windows system. Take a look at the two examples below.

First you download Samurize from the homepage, then you decide which additional files you want. Categories include language files, graphics and skins (like new icons, images) and scripts & plugins (headlines, weather module, system information, visual plugins and the like).

This way you build your own custom system based on the files provided. You are free to create your own scripts and plugins, add your own background images and icons and the like. Very flexible system which needs some time to understand the relations. Once you get the hang you are free to create a customized system.

Chaos Crystal, strange name for a freeware that makes it possible to set a transparency level of every window that is open on your windows system - to be preciser, on your windows 2000 or xp system. Chaos Crystal can be run from everywhere without problems because it does not install itself but simply becomes active when executed.

Apply transparency by pressing and dragging the target (Dot next to Window Title field) crosshairs over the target window. You can also apply transparency by selecting the application from the dropdown menu.”

Your hard drive is filled to the brim but you don’t know why ? You want to free up some disk space on a drive because you are going to need it for some other files that you want to save there ? Windows is not offering many help when it comes to determining which folders are holding the largest files on your hard drives.

Folders Report is a freeware that scans a drive, partition or folder for information and displays them in a neat list. It lists all folder names, size of files and size on disk, the amount of files and the location. It scans drives very fast, my f: drive for instance is a 160 GB hard drive and it took only some seconds to scan the entire drive and display its contents.

Folders Report offers some advanced information as well, e.g. information about hidden, read only, system and compressed files in a certain folder, the number of subfolders, the date the folder was created and last modified and the directory level which is simply the amount of folders between root and the current folder.

The program can be run from any location on your hard drive, it does not install itself and does not change settings on your system. You can sort the listing by clicking on one of the tabs like Size on Disk or Files.

Device Lock allows you to close open USB and firewire ports as well as other device ports that make it possible to run external devices on your computer. With all the live cds and programs that run from USB such connections to the pc have become a greater security risk than ever before. System administrators as well as security concerned end users should disable every means of accessing the pc or running software from devices that could access it.

Device Lock is a great utility that allows system administrators to lock out practically every device that is able to run software or connect to the pc on a per user base. It is even possible to define special times that enable the devices and times were the same devices are locked out. Special USB devices can be enabled and all others locked out. The program is highly configurable and integrated into the windows group policy editor.

You need Windows XP professional for this then obviously because XP home does not have the group policy editor. The tool is having a list of administrators that are able to change the policys, all others are not able to change the policy although they might be administrators as well.

Device Lock creates extensive log files which might come in handy if you suspect a user was fiddling around with the settings or tried to connect a device to the computer.

The newest version is Bryce 5.5 which is not available for download at this time. Everyone who downloads Bryce 5.0 will recieve a voucher to upgrade to Bryce 5.5 for 19.95$. Is that a bargain ? PDF Online is a nice and easy way to convert documents to pdf. All you have to do is select a supported document type from your hard drive, name the output filename and select an email address where the newly created pdf file will be send to. The script does not only support document files but also image files. The maximum file size of your document can’t exceed two megabytes.

Supported document files are doc, ppt, xls, rft, pps, html, txt and pub - supported image files are jpg, gif, tiff, bmp, png, emf and wmf. This is great if you are in need of a pdf file but do not want to download a software that is able to convert the files.

Apple Quicktime and Realmedias Realplayer are typical heavyweight programs that install themselves in ways that could influence the speed of your system. Both add parts of their suit to be run at system startup and load slowly nevertheless. It is also great if you distrust big companies and are looking for freeware alternatives to those big media suits.

Real Alternative is able to play all media files that the Real Player is able to play including streaming content and content on websites. Quicktime Alternative has the same functionality as Apples Quicktime software as well. What makes both alternatives great is that they do not have background processes running and that there is no advertisement, no registration or other annonying things going on.

Both players tend to use lower ressources than the original players which is great if you are using a computer that is not running on the latest hardware. I suggest to uninstall the original players and install the alternative versions because of those reasons. Quicktime Alternative is also working with iTunes if you install those tools in a certain order. First Quicktime Alternative, then iTunes + Quicktime, uninstall Quicktime, install Quicktime Alternative.

Working with files is really uncomfortable in windows. If you want to copy files from one folder to a different one you will have to open two windows showing both folders and use drag and drop to copy the files. File Managers offer an easier way to work with files by offering two explorer windows for instance with the ability to perform all file operations in the file manager.

Free commander offers some additional features that make it a valuable tool for every windows user. It is able to check and synchronise files and folders, wipe files, calculate folder sizes, split and filter files and much more. It has a built in file viewer and can read zip, cab and rar files as well as a multitude of other files.

A great feature is that it can be run not only from hard drive but also from usb stick, CD or floppy disks because it does not install itself. Just run it from the location that you’ve chosen and everything will work out fine.

now a new beta release of the great website copier HTTrack. The program aims towards the experienced user with all its options and settings but can be used by novices as well. Most settings are optional that should be used for websites that use a lot of scripting and dynamic pages.

The question that some of you might be asking is why would someone want to rip a website ? You could rip websites for offline browsing purposes. Maybe you have a second computer without direct internet access but would like to view the website on this computer as well. A website that gives an overview over a programming language is a good example. Another reason would be to save the information that is on the website this way, maybe you fear that the website might be offline soon.

The HTTrack website offers a step by step guide that can be used to understand the main features of the tool and rip your first website using the settings of the tutorial. HTTrack is available for Windows and Unix, Linux & BSD.

I think you can´t have enough file recovery utilities once you lost data on your computer either by accidentally deleting the files or by crashes or hardware failures. It is better to have one additional try at recovering the data than to give up if the first program that you´ve been using failed to recover the files. It is even better to already have those programs installed or ready at hand to use them immediately after you have lost the files. Chances that you are able to recover the files are highest right after the incident because no new data was written in the sectors the deleted files occupied.

PC Inspector is avilable for every Windows operating system starting with Windows 95. The tool has a great chance of success if you are using it right after you found out about the data loss. You should also remember that PC Inspector is not able to recover files from hard drives that are no longer recognised by either the bios or windows.

Some of its features are:

• Finds partitions automatically, even if the boot sector or FAT has been erased or damaged

• Recovers files with the original time and date stamp

• Supports the saving of recovered fimmediatelytwork drives

• Recovers files, even when a header entry is no longer available. Competition products cannot recover such files.

love little useful freeware programs, the smaller the better in my opinion. Mikes Command Line is another one of them with 72K in size. The freeware opens a single line command bar when executed. You may then type the name of a program, e.g. notepad or calc and the program window of the program that you typed in opens. This by itself is mighty useful but wait until you hear this.

You are able to define macros in the tool itself, the author provides for example a macro for a google and wikipedia search on his website. After the macro is in place you can perform google searches by typing “g searchstring” in the command line tool. Macros can be added for other services as well of course. You can select that Mikes Command Line tool stays minimized in the system tray until you activate it by hot key or clicking it. The other options are always on top and a normal window behaviour.

One final feature is that Mikes Command Line supports plugins, the author offers a plugin sdk on his website and some plugins that have already been created. You will be able to control winamp, log off, shut down and restart windows, empty the recycle bin or the recent documents folder, browse the file structure of your computer and extend the macro functionality to add automatic actions like clicks and keystrokes to it.

You have got lots of different file formats on your computer: jpg, jpeg, gif, bmp and png or rtf, txt, doc and pdf for instance. The big question that comes to my mind is why do we need that many formats. Most file formats offer no gain over the other, would not it make sense to convert all files of a certain type to one format only ?

Omniformat is able to convert 75 different document types, the emphasis lies on text and graphic documents. I can think of one reason for myself to convert documents to different formats: I sometimes download files that I´am not able to edit because they have been either created on a different operating system and my system does not support editing the file or I simply do not have an editor at hand for the document.

This could be the most prominent reason for most users of omniformat but there are or course more. Omniformat is able to watch a folder for new documents. Once a new document is added to the folder it will be automatically converted to a choosen format. An image could be converted to a text document using OCR for instance.
