Folding@Home

i was wondering how many people fold for TF or would be interested in doing so. think of this as a membership drive. follow the link in my sig if you are interested to check out the F@H thread. it would be great if we could get a bunch more members involved. the TF team is doing quite well in terms of productivity, we moved up 12 positions in the last week :D and we can do so much better with more team members. i know many of our 40 odd thousand members aren't regulars but i'm certain there are a lot more regulars than are folding.

the idea of the F@H program:
Our goal: to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases

What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help by simply running a piece of software. Folding@Home is a distributed computing project -- people from through out the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer makes the project closer to our goals.

Folding@Home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems thousands to millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.
Folding@Home Download Page

basically all you need to do is download a client and configure it. there are two main versions:

GUI
Console

the console version is more efficient and uses less resources. either way when you configure the client use the team number 12864, use any user name you like and you're done :D. i would like to stress that by using F@H you lose virtually no power from your pc as it only uses spare resources i.e it won't effect gaming etc. it's a chance to do something good that doesn't cost you any more than a small bit of electricity.

i reccomend the console version and either letting it run as a service (type yes when it asks this in the configuration) or by using a shortcut in the "startup" folder.

I'm folding for TF
I broke 10000 points a couple of days ago

Posted by: nitestick

that's around about the amount of points i've made unfortunately about two thirds of that was for overclockers.com.au and i thought i would show some TF patriotism seeing as i spend more time here so i switched

Posted by: PZEROFGH

I think I'm folding for TF :freak:

Posted by: m3trj

I'm folding, but not for any team. Perhaps I should.

Posted by: toxicity_27

I was actually going to start folding when I got cable internet, and I got cable yesterday, so I'll probably download that and start folding today or tomorrow.

Posted by: talldude123

I'm folding for the forum, as of yesterday. I need to bump up the CPU usage on it though, I've got no WU's yet. But I did shut my computer down last night...

Posted by: Vybuni

I've been folding on and off for a while now. I forgot about it for a while, so thanks for reminding me. :)

Posted by: Jam3s-Zer0

I've been folding on and off like Vybuni but am going to make sure I leave it on now.

Posted by: toxicity_27

Well I started folding, since my laptop sucks, I only put it at 15% cpu usage, maybe I'll bump it up later... and if I decide to do that, how do I go about changing the CPU usage?

Posted by: talldude123

Go to the Preferences, Advanced, CPU Usage.

Posted by: toxicity_27

I'm using the console version, but maybe I'll switch over to the graphical version.

Posted by: theprofessor17

about 6,000 points away from top 10

Posted by: Makaveli213

I fold but i already have a team that i am with.

Posted by: Trotter

I just updated the team list:
http://tech-forums.net/showthread.php?s=&postid=675477#post675477

I copied the members whao have been active recently. Some of the names are not the screen names of TF members, so if your Folding name is different than your TF screen name PM me so I can fix it.

Posted by: j369852147412

i just started to fold 10 minutes ago. and i hope i'm doing this for a good cause.

Depending on the size of the WU it can take from 1 day up to whatever,Remember it's not a contest to see who can do the most or the fastest,It's about helping to understand how thing's work and maybe eventually leading to a cure for these disease's ;)

What are you talking about? Of course its a contest. :freak:

Posted by: Shumway

If it's a contest i'm beating you then,I'm sitting in 38 and your at 39 and plus i'm going to have 2 more WU's finished later today :D

Posted by: Trotter

Added j369852147412 to the list.

It's not a contest...? You mean, I really don't get a Ferrari...?

Posted by: Disillusion

Well, I don't completely understand what I'm doing here, but I'm in. :)

I guess I'm letting them use my computing power for their research or something?

Posted by: Trotter

Added OpticalIllusion.

Not really much to understand. Folding runs in the background. It downloads a WU (work unit), chews on it until it is done, then uploads it to Stanford while grabbing another one.

With millions of users running Folding, it equates to more computing than a super-computer running 24/7 (I forget exactly how much, but it is mind-boggling). And all of it devoted to trying to find the key to cancer.

Posted by: Shumway

OpticalIllusion if you want to read up on it more check this out.

Posted by: m3trj

I've added the TF team number to my client config. That's all I need to do right?

Posted by: Crysalis

I just started too... Installed on one of my desktops and will put on my laptop as well.

Posted by: nitestick
just let it run at 100%, the percentage of processor power setting means the percentage if idle. if your computer is 100% idle then it will use 100% of it's power, 80% idle then only 80% and so on so forth. if you set it to 15% and your pc is 100% idle then it will still only use 15%.

to configure the console open the run command (start>run) and type the location of the folding at home client (or drag and drop the program into the run dialogue box will put the location there, or click browse) then type a space and -config. click run and it will start folding at home at the configuration section

the good cause is scientific research, misfolding of proteins is known to cause many diseases and disorders and suspected of causing others. you can help cure cancer :D. if we could get all of our members folding we could beat OCAU :p

Posted by: Lord AnthraX

Wait so basically the CPU will constantly be running at 100% then?

Posted by: talldude123

While you're here Nitestick,

could you tell me how to get the Folding@Home signature?

What do i input in the signature area? An image or link? I dont get it.

Posted by: Vybuni

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/?nav=IMAGES

I posted this in the other folding@home thread, just so you know. Gaara had it there on the first post. ;)

Posted by: nitestick

it's a script, the info is in the F@H thread somewhere. i'll have a look

Posted by: Disillusion

No. Go to the configuration menu and click the Advanced tab and you can adjust the CPU usage percentage there.

Well I know that but I mean the example Nitestick stated, wouldn't it run at 100% all the time say if your using 6% like I am now, the other 94 would be directed towards F@H correct?

Posted by: Vybuni

Basically instead of "System Idle Processes" using up your CPU, F@H will. It has the lowest priority so it shouldn't affect any of your other processes and programs.

Posted by: nitestick

^^^^ that's it. only the resources you are not using will be used for folding. if you set the percentage for F@H to use it is the maximum of total processor power that can be used if available. if it can use 100% but only 90% is available only 90% will be used.

Posted by: Apokalipse

my PC got given a really big WU to do; 20000 frames, and so far it's got 7 ½ days left (that's with it running 24/7)

Posted by: Crysalis

ya... my desktop has a 500 frame WU and my laptop got 20,000 frame.

I wish it was the other way around because my desktop is on 24/7

Posted by: Ste

No I don't fold for TF But I SETI for teh OCC.
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/team_display.php?teamid=30723

Posted by: nitestick

i'm impressed that i managed to get 12 people admit they fold. be great to see some more click "no but i will" :D

Posted by: nitestick

bumpety

Posted by: Trotter

I figured, if nothing else, people would jump on just have have the extra real estate in their sigs.

For those who don't know, the Folding at TF boxes that many have in their sigs doesn't count toward the sig limit. It is a little "bonus" given as a thank you from TF for being a part of the Folding team.

Posted by: Shumway

For those that are interested here's a couple link's to show where you stand in rank and also how much each WU is worth point's wise.

So how exactly do we get our stats in the F@H sigs? If someone could post me a link for one or something, that would be great.

Sweet, thanks.

Posted by: nitestick

the reason i'm plugging for membership is because after looking at the stats TF has some potential to make conquests. we moved up 14 positions this week :D

Posted by: Apokalipse

my CPU isn't the best, but I think it's making a big folding effort (I keep it on 24/7 to fold)

Posted by: bum

wow just got a 50,000 frame WU. New record???

it says it will take 9965 days...

Posted by: Shumway

Lot's of people get those,Although i have been getting nothing but 500's for some reason

Posted by: Apokalipse

have you set it to get deadlineless WU's only?

Posted by: bum

Finished my 50,000 frame WU. Took almost exactly a week of constant folding, except when I was gamming. Probly wasn't worth the time (not worth a ton of points at all) seeing how i can do a normal WU a day, but I don't care, it's for a good cause. Anyways it kinda makes me wish I had two cores, but they were $300, when i built.

Posted by: nitestick

ha ha ha. when i built the x2 3800 was $500 au. granted our currency is different in value but $500 is $500 to anyone. i just prioritised my build on getting the X2.

on a side note we have another folder though as far as i know he isn't a TF member (yet, but i think he's going to sign up soon). he has a reasonable amount of computing power lying around something like 1x3800+, 1x3000+ and 2x2800+

Posted by: Nukem

just wanted to make a plug for the folding again... seems we are at a stale point... except a few of us, of course... :D

C'MON!!!!! Join in and fold already!!!

Posted by: Disillusion

I'm still here. Got 10 WUs done in total so far between my desktop and my laptop. :D

Posted by: bum

Me too.

Watch out, I'm moving up the ranks :p.

Posted by: nitestick

FOLD FOR THE HORDE!!!!!!!! (i don't mean the [H]orde, i mean the TF Horde)

HE|_L_HOUND seems to be moving up the list. he is the friend i mentioned above. i think i have 2 others folding as well :). dig in guys, it's not as if it detracts from your computing. it uses what you're not and goes to a good cause. it should be easier to recruit members from here than outside TF

edit: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=12864

yeah, HE|_L_HOUND is doing alright seeing as he's made our most productive list.

i've been thinking for a while (it would be great if others could try too :D) that i'm going to try and get my old primary school and high school to allow the computers to contribute. in my high school there would have to be say about 150 pcs, with the minimum being about P4 1.6GHz and that offers some quite significant crunching power. negotiate with the IT administrators to have the console version run as a service for team 12864 (doesn't matter if it has a user name) and find out if it can be given access past any firewall if necessary to automatically send and receive work. if not sooner a later a student will enter their username and password to access the internet and it can send then. just think about it......150+ computers running at least 6-8 hours a day :D. get offices on board, heck drop on by a retail store and sneak in with a flash drive and set up their computers (if no net you could always copy finished work back onto the flash drive and send from home :p). FOR THE HORDE!!!!!!

Posted by: Nukem

besides... aside from all that... I NEED THE COMPETITION!!! :D

you you should fold for a good cause... :) I can't do it at my work, but I am trying to get my friends to do it as well (under my name of course :p)

Posted by: Shumway

Just have to get myself a router and some more ram then i'll have a little folding team,Right now i have my p3-733 running 24/7 but i have to hook the internet up every time i need to upload a WU,When i can i try to let it run all night on my 3000+ but the ol lady b!@#$'s so i have to turn it off most of the time cause it's pretty loud,Also trying to get my old sempron going then that will be running 24/7 as well :D

i would fold... but my CPU is already dedicated elsewhere, sorry.

Posted by: firemandave

I'm now folding for team TF. Now that my PC is stable and can run 24/7, I'll just leave it going. I'm adding to my network too... building a little group of older hardware just for folding.

Posted by: Trotter

I'm trying to keep the list of active Folders updated. Click the link and see if you are on the list. If you're not, PM me and I'll add you.

good to hear firemandave :D.

Posted by: nitestick

ok this is a final warning

FOLD FOR TF OR YOU'LL GO TO THE SAME PLACE LAWYERS DO WHEN THEY DIE!!!

that's right, fold for TF or i'll send you to disneyland :D

Posted by: nitestick

ok another bump for this thread. i have some news. i've set up a milestone club for those of you who actually bother to fold. check out this thread http://tech-forums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=133814

i think i've added everyone to the list but i can't be certain. if you fold check out the thread and you may be able to pick up a userbar. no cheating or my buddy good ol' Trotter will remove your sig if you take a userbar you haven't earned.

Posted by: Trotter

Very nice. Plus, it's bragging rights and free real estate. What's not to love?

Posted by: baronvongogo

I folded but the program stopped working :'could not connect to server' I emptied the work folder still no joy.

Posted by: nitestick

did it pop up a box saying "ready to connect to network", you're supposed to click "ok". it may be you have a firewall blocking F@H's access to the net so check and make F@H an exception from the firewall

Posted by: baronvongogo

it did that on the first WU i click ok and it ran fine Iv done 1 WU already, but now when it trys to get a 2nd packet it cant and its allowed through my firewall...i might have to reinstall the software.

Posted by: nitestick

are you using the graphical or the console version? try the console version if you're using the GUI.

Posted by: baronvongogo

ok I will do, once i get home thanks

Posted by: nitestick

oh, by the way apparently it's not reccomended that you have both the GUI and console versions installed so uninstall the GUI before you start the console.

Posted by: m3trj

Holy crap I'm number 11 top producer on that overclockers site! I completely forgot I was folding! I only installed it a couple of months ago.

I'm not gonna be folding for about a month now though.

Posted by: Nukem

WHY AREN'T YOU FOLDING!! :D

Posted by: Nukem

FOLD, FOLD, FOLD.... and fold some more...

I just broke 100K, C'mon now...

Ya'know ya wanna... :D

Posted by: BennyV04988

Way to dig up a 2month old thread dude... props
