When I google my name, I get some random dude from another country (his blog). And then some other people.

Now, how do I get my name to be up on the top of the list? How does Google's search algorithm work in this case?

Send them money? That seems to work for everything else.

Seriously though, there might be a connection to $

Get a new name that no one else has?

When i google my name, i get one result and that is from my high school website. I dont think my school would pay google to put up the annoucments for april 23 or w/e it was. I dont know how you do it.

EDIT, turns out it was removed. I no longer come up with any results.

I think it also depends on how google rank your site you know the green bar in IE

I'm pretty sure it has to do with how much you pay google, if you aren't paying, it's first come first serve.

Posted by: deelip

That needs heavy seo.
I am lucky enough. My site displays in number 1 when i type my name in google.

Posted by: barbiedoll1973

Yes I think that it has to do with the more money that you pay to google also.

Add your name to a page that shows a high google pagerank. If you have the google toolbar installed, you can see the pagerank on all web pages.

Funny story talking about names. I googled "Hitler" once and got about two pages of pictures of Barney. Weird.

Posted by: sam2698

I don't get pictures of Barney when i type Hitler in google...

Anyways, it all depends on the uniqueness of your name. If you have a unique name and if your name is displayed in sites and such, then your name will appear on top of google.

It has nothing to do with money. Google is a free place and lists sites for free. You don't pay them money to get a better listing. The sponsored ads on the side of their results and sometimes on the top of the results are where they make their money. The other results are free listings.

90% of it lies within the META tags and the actual content of the page.
If you have keywords in your META tags matching the searched query and your page content also matches the query your page has a great chance of showing up in the top 10 results.

Money, as far as Google goes, can only reserve the two first spots (has a blue-ish background above #1 result) and the side spots (right of results) that are basically like ads, and you pay per clicks.

Well atleast you don't have the same problem I do, when I google my name Porn sites come up :amazed: I dont think I could offer enough money to overcome this problem.

Posted by: wan_14my

Why don't you try this:

1. Search your name on google.
2. Contact the top 5 rank website
3. Exchange link with them

Maybe some of them will turn you down. But, it's worth trying.

Posted by: IceKoldKilla

if i google my name i get over 1million results, and im pretty sure that the big companys pay google

Posted by: sat123

i get links pages from my blogs...but i see many persons with my name also exist...in this world and also in internet...but i appear on top off google in this case...

all you need to do is build links to your site/bio with anchor text links using your name - that is simple enough to do if you feel like writing an article or two and then distributing them to some article directories with a link back to you. If your name is not that common then chances are you will be able to get on the first page if not number #1.

The above post is correct. The person ranking for your name got there because there are more links pointing to his site on your name than your own.

Actually it is a little more complicated then that but in essence that's what is happening.

There are also elements of quality, freshness of the link, relation to your own site, and relevance that also impact whether the link is considered but essentially He With The Most Links Gets Top Ranking.

Google is built on link popularity. It rose to be the top engine because of its PageRank algorithm which calculates all those links into a factor that influences your ranking.

While optimized meta tags and content do help, as one poster suggested, you wil find that it's links that drive your rankings.

The nice thing is, with a little research you can outrank him.

Start by seeing who links to him. use this command:

link:his-site.com where "his-site" is the url of the other site. Google will display a list of links (probably a short list) that it determines are the most important. You can also use this query on Yahoo and MSN to see what links they have.

Then combine these lists and start submitting your site to them (if you can).
