I have a high speed connection, and am wondering how I can host my own site with my pc, since I do not have a server

more details would be helpful such as: os, pc specs, etc.

In general, you can host a website with XP and then you just have to open some ports on ur firewall and router and your up an running. If you want to have you own name (ie. www.myname.com) you have to buy a domain(google it), but otherwise you can just use ur ip address(ie. 207.69.165.235)

You can also use No-IP.

what do you think is a server? its simply operating system. you install Server operating system on a P-2 machine, it becomers server. there is no definition of hardware in server platform.

so you can use your PC as a server with ZERO problems.

how do I set up the web site?

www.apache.org

Not to be mean but apache might be too much for him to start off with. www.abyss.com . Abyss is simple web server that works well. I always recomend it to first timers wanting to learn about web hosting from there own machine. Use that and if you need some real control and options then try Apache.

DK admin, i have spare room on my dedicated servers, give me a PM and ill give you some free space and a free subdomain. I dont use a ton of space, and ill give you FTP access, so just gimme a PM.

Oh, also, use apache, forward ports, and the directory for apache is in the /program files / apache / some folder in thare, but you can change it via the config file. (its the troubles i had the first time)

I would use AppServ + No-IP

http://www.no-ip.com

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/appserv/appserv-win32-2.5.6.exe?download

for one you need to be sure port 80 is not blocked for incoming traffic from your isp, many do block most 'server' ports (smtp, pop3, http etc). A static ip is also much better, but no-ip service can work also.

nah, Apache will be fine, I just finished doing some simple to read and easy to understand tutorials on apache configuration, and since he is probibly using Windows, he doesn't have to do the compiling, he can just use the installer. DON'T FORGET TO OPEN PORTS IN BOTH YOUR HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE FIREWALLS!!!

will it work for me to register the domain name, even though I have a dynamic IP address?

Posted by: OutThere

yeah, go to www.no-ip.com, this site will constantly refresh your DNS and will register you a URL that you can use your Domain name to Mask over. If you need any help with apache you can check out the tutorials on my site, they give pretty simple walkthrews, or you could come back to this forum for help with it.

Does anyone know how I can put a proxy on my web site, I am using apache to host it on my computer.

Posted by: Jman888

I would Suggest Ubuntu Server Edition (Assuming you have a Net Ready pc with at least 64 mb Ram. Who doesnt :) Because i went the apache rought and got hacked. So i say never go with Windows for a Website because its just not secure enough. But ubuntu server has a LAMP server Install cd that will get you up and running quick.

I would like to stick to apache, and I am going to password lock the proxy section, so that only people whom I trust can use it.

Posted by: dkadmin

If anyone knows how to add a proxy to apache then please tell me, but I have another question. I used the tutorial on the apache website for authentication, Authorization and Access Control "http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/howto/auth.html", but when I opened the htpasswd utility that came with apache, to create the password file, it just ran for a second then immediately closed. Does anyone know what I should do?

I am running apache on windows xp home edition. Could anyone tell me where I can get frontpage server extensions for it?
