PDA and Internet question

I'm thinking of buyin a PDA but was wondering if and how you can connect to the internet with them.

Do you have to have a separate card?

Do you have to pay a subcription to an ISP as with a home PC?

Will they work in a wireless hotspot? (I know a little about these after spotting one in McDonalds the other day!)

Any help greatly appreciated.

Say you bought something like this;

Usually in PDA's, these days, they have an sd card slot, which can double as a card slot for something like this;

You wouldn't have to pay for a seperate ISP since you can buy a wireless router. Otherwise you could piggyback off of another hotspot.

Depending on the signal strength, and/or the type of security on the wireless, (say a WEP or WPA key, or essentially, a password) you'll be able to use a hotspot.

Although, I'm not sure what the wifi card in a PDA like that supports, in the sense of encryption.
