The folding application is easy to install and use, and will never fight over resources when you have other demanding applications in use For further reading: http://folding.stanford.edu/ http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=12864 http://www.tech-forums.net/showthread.php?threadid=25049 How can you get involved? Send a message to me (gaara) if you are interested in participating and if you have any questions/comments. Your name will be added to a list and in the future this list of people may very well receive added benefits from the forum Then go ahead and download the client and follow the installation instructions. You will be prompted to enter the team number, which for Tech-Forums is 12864, as well as your username, and then you're done. Simply run the program whenever it is most convenient to you The more you run it, the better it is both for the cause, and for the forum. There are thousands of forums which each have specific folding teams and they are ranked based on how much folding they can accomplish. The more folding we do, the more reputable our forum becomes. Furthermore, in the future, members who aggresively participate in folding@home activities may become eligible for certain privileges or benefits Running the folding program will only cost you a bit more when it comes to the electric bill, but it's no more than running another small lightbulb in your house. Why are we starting this again? Folding@Home is an honourable cause and it only makes sense to support it when the end justifies the means. We have had an inactive and unmotivated folding team for far too long now and it's time that we change that and get on the map What about signatures? As you may know, Folding@Home has a specific image script you can display in your signature that shows your Folding@Home statistics. You may also be aware that our forum has rather strict signature rules (read), however, we are pleased to announce that members who participate in Folding@Home for our team are permitted to keep their existing abiding signature as well as the Folding image script. For further reading, please refer to this What other benefits do you receive?-Nitestick I'm pleased to announce that we now have the F@H milestone clubs in place. There will be another thread posted in this forum which will contain all the members of each club. If you achieve a milestone we'll add your name to the list as a permanent reminder of your contribution, however the right to remove your name from the list is retained should you be banned or repeatedly break the rules etc. Check out the thread and userbars located here. Most importantly, KEEP FOLDING!!!
Doesn't seem like it needs any special shut down process. Probably better when it exits cleanly, as opposed to being killed. Not a big deal, so your shutdown command should be no problem. It only uses bandwidth to upload a completed WU or download a new one, so it rarely uses any at all (WUs, depending on their sizes, can take a long time to finish). It's more of a CPU usage thing. You don't even have to be always online for it to actually process stuff. Posted by: joshd thank'ee kindly. i think i will start doing that then. Posted by: mac_mogul I've had my iBook folding for quite a while, and its completed several wu's... but when i looked ont he F@H site today, on our team page under my username it doesn't even register the iBook as a processor. Its still stuck on from back when I completed 1 WU on my old iMac. Any ideas on how to fix this? It feels kinda dumb to have wasted like 7 WU's lol Posted by: thebleakness Wow, this is crazy. I just learned about this today on anothe forum but i already said that i would fold for them. I just wanted to make sure, i dont have to be online too have this running do I? I dont have an always connected internet due too dial-up. Posted by: macdude425
Originally posted by mac_mogul I've had my iBook folding for quite a while, and its completed several wu's... but when i looked ont he F@H site today, on our team page under my username it doesn't even register the iBook as a processor. Ensure that your username and team number (12864) are correct. And no, thebleakness, you do not always have to be connected; only when you are originally downloading the WU and when you are transferring back the results. Posted by: nitestick perhaps this should be added to the overclocking section as overclockers would see the most appeal in folding. i didn't realise TF had a folding team or i would have joined. i am now contemplating switching but i've been folding for OCAU for a couple of months. Posted by: Greg Where'd you guys get the Linux version? On this page (http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html) the linux download gives you an EXE file. Posted by: joshd umm i don't understand this. it doesnt show me on the TF team list, and i completed a WU, it has registered this on the F@H graphical interface, but i still have 0 points. are the WUs being uploaded properly? if the results are not getting to Stanford Uni, there is no point me doing this. Posted by: thebleakness Did you get new instructions already? Give it some time to refresh and add your new WU too the team. It sometimes takes a couple days. Same thing happened to me. Posted by: joshd how do you add it to the team? i just put my username in and the team number, and left it going, and yes, i have a new WU to do already. OK, i will wait a few days and post again if it still doesnt work. EDIT: it worked now, see look, i'm 52nd on the team. :) fun fun. Posted by: Apokalipse I've got my Sempron system folding now, instead of the family's Athlon XP. the Sempron is great, and will run stably at 100% load for days straight however I do not always get a connection to the internet. I have cable, which is connected to my wireless router, but it only connects when it decides to kinda. right now, I have finished another WU, but I can't send it, because the thing won't connect to the router. Posted by: thebleakness I had the same problem for awhile. I was on dial up because my wireless refused to work so when i tried to send in new results it would time out and disconnect. It would take an hour or so just to connect and recieve new instructions and on dial-up, that isnt good, takes up the phone line. Posted by: gaara Are there more people folding than what is currently on the list? Posted by: thebleakness The list on the first page of this thread? If so, yes. There were alot of people who have contributed to the TF folding team. Just check the stats. As for members currently folding and those that have stopped, i dunno. Posted by: Lonewolf5460 yah i am not on the front list and i am folding its just that it takes alot longer to complete one WU thatn i thought i am 40% completed on a WU Posted by: thebleakness The WUs vary in size. I had one the other day that took 48 hours to complete. Normally they take about 24. I just looked at the one im doing right now, this ones also going to take about 2 days to complete. I dunno why im getting these ridculously large WUs....strange. Posted by: Lonewolf5460 i have about 9 more days june 6th. i know but i dont turn on my comp as much any more. Posted by: joshd i had a 4 day one the other week, and I did ~3 days of it, when it decided it had an error, and started on a new WU. :( Posted by: joshd it has done that twice now. i get ~80% of a WU done, and next time i load it, it just fetches a new one... :S EDIT: @gaara after reading the the first post again, do i actually have to PM/contact you if i want to be on "the team" or do i just go ahead and fold, like i have been doing? Posted by: Trifid I ahve sent you a PM Gaara, and have started it running. Slightly annoying that there is a icon though. 24th December 06 is a long way away, I will leave it up when i am not playing a game though. Posted by: Ste Theres Also SETI. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ I have F@H on a dell for another forum and I did SETI At One Time. Posted by: Trifid
I have F@H on a dell for another forum
TRAITOR!!! :p I have got another question, is this the same one that XS are doing? Also, why does it change what it is doing? It said WU end 1day, then it said 2days and now it is on 4days and 4 hours. :( Posted by: thebleakness Josh, the reason its ending i beleive, is because there is a time limit for each WU, your computer might be taking too much time and its cancelling it and automatically getting a new one. F@H takes up alot of your cpu power, when you have other programs open using the cpu, the amount of power dedicated for F@H drops and takes longer to complete. I have mine running all day and i close the app when i play games, so it goes by relativly quick. Posted by: Chris_PC Just started folding, Its a good excuse to convince my parents to let me buy watercooling and its for a good cause! One thing I have to say though is if you made it more obvious(eg puttin a sticky in places where more people look, the overclocking forum etc) that Tech-Forums had a folding team then I think more people would join. One day I just decided I was going to start folding and the first team I thought about joining was ABIT. At first, It didnt cross my mind that TF may have a team. But I Used the good old search button ;) Posted by: The General I'm fixing up my old Athlon XP just for this. I'll let ya know. Posted by: macdude425 Whoever asked about the Linux executable earlier, yes, it is an EXE file (only God knows why they did that), but if you change the permissions of the file as it says to on the README and then ./ or sh it, it WILL work. Posted by: Greg Ah, you are right. Thanks for that, I will try to start folding soon Posted by: woot7800GT Joined. Posted by: Apokalipse I'm climbing up the ladder now: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=12864 I seem to have found a good setup and location for my wireless antenna. I also put one of these reflectors on the antennas to my router, and my wireless network card. anyway, with my Sempron hitting an absolute maximum of 29ºC (at 100% load), I can run it almost 24/7 now. Posted by: Trotter Keep those WU's rolling... but don't get too close to me. Posted by: macdude425 I can't keep mine running 24/7 but it runs a good chunk of the day; my parents get mad if I leave it on ALL the time. Also, I have it on my dad's machine, and he's been using it a lot lately, so I'm getting a lot of my WUs from there lately. I have folding installed on my rig, and I am currently set to fold for SFF Tech, but I haven't done any in months... I will change it up to Tech-Forums, and let it rip... It has no problems completing units in 1-1.5 days... Also, I have a few other PC's that I can set up to do folding on... I have an old PC at my parents house that has been doing folding for months, and completed like 3 WU's... lol. I will let you know when I am all set up, it might not be until the weekend, cause I got like 122392846789346 things to do before tomorrow, then a wedding rehersal on Friday for a friend, & wedding & reception on Saturday... busy times.! Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Ok, I have 1 PC up and running, and since I HARDLY ever use it (at home) it will be running Folding practically 24x7... SLIGHTLY OC'd it to 2.36 Ghz as seen in my sig... first WU should be good to go on 07/08/2006... WOOT! I will have to stop by the parents house tomorrow after work, and change the team number on the POS running in their basement... get an extra core.... P3 @ 1Ghz, but still and extra core.. :p Posted by: Trifid Hmmm... I have a problem. Folding is making my PC unstable. :( If I do anything other than internet my PC will hang for a while and if I'm in a game it will not a manual shut down. :( Posted by: Trotter Folding does max out your CPU, but it defers to anything else you have running or start up. I always turn Folding off when I game, though. What do you have in your system, Trifid? Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Well, I completed ONE WU so far, but I have an issue, where is FAH is run for more than 24 hours it throws a critical error, and shuts down. I am gonna format my HDD one of these days... EDIT: didn't feel a NEW post was needed.... just updating that I went to the parents house, and updated the POS computer with my name & our team number... It WAS set so that the screen saver went on after 5 minutes, and FAH ran ONLY during screen saver, but the result was 7 WU finished is just as many months.... lol. So I have it running constantly in the background now... :p Next WU on this PC is done in 14 hours.... I will set up my HTPC tomorrow, don't have time now, hafta get ready to go to a wedding. I always turn Folding off when I game, though. What do you have in your system, Trifid?
But it is set on lowest priority. I think it is this work unit, as it started to hang slightly when it went onto it, but not enough for me to bother with finding the cause, the further through it gets the worse it is. :( The other BG programs are AVG, Set-point (for mouse), Realtek sound, and Nvidia control panel. Specs: AMD 64 3000 @ 2160mhz (water cooled), 1.5GB of GIEL ram @196.4mhz (DDR400 standard), BFG 7800GT, ASUS A8N-SLI, 80GB Seagate, 250GB W.D., and a Hiper Type R 580w. In a very hot room. :( The PC crashes within 30mins of running FS2004 if I have folding up. Must be said it has locked up a couple of times with out folding when running SquarkBox (multiplayer with air traffic control.) Although to add more confirmation to Folding, if my PC lockup, but recovers, if I try to open folding window, it will not respond from task manager. Edit: I ran a Virus scan the other day and no virus's. Posted by: Trotter Hot room? Are your temps running high? I don't understand why your rig is hanging with this. Have you tried cleaning out your registry, or uninstalling the Folding client and reinstalling? Posted by: Trifid According to ASUS probe it isn't that hot (max 38*C I have seen it at.) The voltages are stable (again AsusProbe.) 12v = 11.968 5v = 5.053 3.3v = 3.312 CPU = 1.424 I haven't cleaned out the registry. Any good programs? (Preferably one that can clean out FRAPS too for an older version :p ) I will lose this wu if I uninstal though and it is worth a good some of points to TF. Posted by: Trotter CCleaner has a registry cleaner. I use TweakNow for this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/TweakNow_RegCleaner_Standard_d4134.html Follow it up with RegCompact 1.8 to defrag your registry: http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCompact_d465.html You'll have to restart when it is done. Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Is there a way to DELETE or ABORT a work unit, and start a new one? My slower machine is working on a Gromacs WU with 50000 frames that won't be completed till May of 2009... :( [Was posted in the Profanity thread by mistake. Moved it here.] Posted by: Trotter It may say that it won't be completed until then, but it will be finished before. My current WU says it is due August 23 12:49:40. It will be finished by morning. Posted by: Ste
Originally posted by Trifid TRAITOR!!! :p I have got another question, is this the same one that XS are doing? (And din't delete the annoying FRAPS - should be illegal for a company to add software that can't be deleted with out a format.) Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Sorry about that Trotter, I was falling asleep and probably clicked the wrong thread, cause I just did the quick reply.. lol Anyways, yeah, you were correct... I am not exactly sure when it will be done, cause it is hooked up to the TV, and the resolution is terrible... using it for recording shows is flawless, and perfect, but reading text, makes me dizzy... lol. By the time I woke up, 4500 of 50000 frames were complete... It will be done in a few days. Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon This is sad.... only took 5 days to get into the top 50% of the TF folding team... we need more member participation... Posted by: macdude425 Most of the big teams have die-hard users that wouldn't think of joining another folding team (unlike some of our members) and also have rooms chock full of computers that fold around the clock. We have neither. We need both. Posted by: macdude425 Also, I just noticed that our image on our folding homepage no longer exists. Can that be fixed? Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Hrm, I have a closet full of Computers that are turned off.... I should get them rebuilt and folding... but my power bill would be a little out of hand then.... lol. I wonder if you could get claim folding@Home on your Taxes. Posted by: macdude425 Heh - "Trying to save the world. Can I get a tax break for that?" It'd be awesome. You know, another forum I'm a member of has a program where the members have a community hardware trading post, and they build machines out of parts in that section, and trade them for other parts. But in order to do this, you have to agree to run Folding 24/7 on this machine, ONLY Folding, and leave it up as much as you can. Posted by: djg320 This is personally very important to me, and I'll be dedicating a 2.8 P4 and a 1.73 pentium M (my laptop) to this from now on. Took me 15 days to make it past 20th ranked team user... ... still going strong... Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Due to technical issues, I have to suspend folding on one of my rigs.... When folding is running, CPU temps are sustained in the 65* C range... and the CPU and case fans will rev up for a few seconds, then quiet down... I think I am gonna pick up some AS5. Posted by: Trotter
I think I am gonna pick up some AS5.
You may want to grab a new cooler as well. Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon ^^ Unfortunatly, I can't get a new cooler, as I don't have the time & resources to custom mount it... the SN25P uses (from what I have read on various forums anyways) a proprietary mounting.... The heatpipe cooling system they have is pretty effecient, just the thermal paste is kind of Eeh... Well, I TEMPORARLY solved the solution by underclocking the core to 1.8Ghz.... as the computer was rebooting during WoW play because of overheating... grrr... it is folding again though, and temp under load has gone down by 10* C. Posted by: Apokalipse ATM I've kinda halted folding, because I had to reinstall Windows on my machine, and I can't find my driver CD for my wireless card. plus tweaking the 7900 I got is kinda taking more of my time. but once I upgrade my motherboard and CPU (hopefully this week), I'll definately start again. Posted by: King X13 i have a question, i just installed it this afternoon and i joined the TF team :P. now i see you guys have like 30 WU's and 20 wu's. when i look at my little gui screen it says WU end Jun 2 2009. can someone explain lol. thanks. Posted by: Trifid It takes 100 to 1000 frames (depending on total frames) to work out the timming. I started on a 500 frame yesterday that said thr 23rd October 25! 2025!!! If that was true, there would be no point starting it. It will be done sometime tomorrow. Posted by: King X13 lol ah thanks, i was like whoa you guys must have been running this since 1920 lol. Posted by: The General The Linux version is an .exe? lol Whatever I'll just run the Windows version while I'm on vacation. Posted by: macdude425 I do believe I covered this not too long ago. Yes, the Linux file is an .exe, go figure, but it WILL run fine. Posted by: Trifid Whats wrong with it being a exe? Also, after completing that WU, my PC is running very smooth, and no lock ups. Posted by: macdude425 Just a weird thing to append to the name of a LINUX file  Posted by: macdude425 What happened to the sticky? Are we not important anymore? Posted by: uzi9mm soooo anyways.... I would like to join the folding team. But I only want to use my extra computer. How would a dual p2 350mhz workstation w/128 SDram work? (per CPU) (calculated it based on my system, Sempron 2800+ @ 2.0GHZ, which gets one WU in 24-30 hours) though you can probabbly have F@H for Windows, and the console version running at the same time. one running on each CPU. Posted by: uzi9mm no smp support? Posted by: nitestick nope theres no SMP support as such with F@H. you can however run multiple instances on seperate WU's on each processor Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Well, I am down for the count, but my folding machines aren't... lol... I have MONO!!! Really sucks.... I have broken into the TOP 10!!! Found out the machine at my parents house finished a WU like 2 weeks ago, but stupid Zone Alarm was blocking it... lol, TOO funny. All fixed now though... All 3 back up and running. Posted by: nitestick lol i probably should have mentioned that. i set up F@H on my grandfathers pc but fortunately he can't even figure ZA out so he doesn't use it. Posted by: nitestick :( sorry for the double post but i finally found something i can't edit. i finally caved and all my machines are now folding for TF Posted by: idiotec I know I am a little late on this bandwagon, but count me it :D Posted by: bum the graphical version seems to cut out some games. Is there a way to set it so that it only runs when you choose to run it. (like so it doesn't start on start up and I forget). Basically, I can't play jtf even if its in the background and not doing anything at all. I have to kill the process to play my game. Posted by: joshd just get rid of it from your startup folder Posted by: b1gapl Hey guys, I just joined in on TF yesterday, and hope to get alot of WUs done. I have a few questions though: Is it alright to have it running while I'm running only firefox to browse? When I close it, do I just close it or do I have to save the work? Posted by: Trotter I only close/quit Folding when I game. Otherwise, you really don't notice it because it sets itself at lowest priority. Posted by: theprofessor17 I see they now have a client for your GPU. Does anyone know how to run this along side F@H for your cpu. Or should you only let one client run at once? -Thanks (almost top 10!) Posted by: b1gapl What determines how many points you get after you finish a WU? Posted by: Deathawk So that's what all that ranking stuff in your sig's were about.. I thought it was like BF2... lol.. I would do it, but I can't really spare any performance on this computer. Posted by: Trotter
I would do it, but I can't really spare any performance on this computer.
You on your rig 24/7? Just run Folding when you ain't using it. Posted by: b1gapl I see that when folding it always says 100% CPU usage. Wouldn't that decrease the life of the cpu if it 100% for long periods of time? And also what determines how many points you get when you finish a WU? EDIT: Another question....can I run folding@home on two computer at once? Posted by: Trotter
Wouldn't that decrease the life of the cpu if it 100% for long periods of time?
Not really.
And also what determines how many points you get when you finish a WU?
I use a desktop widget from Yahoo's Widget Engine that shows the progress of my current WU. It also shows how many points the WU is worth. Most of them seem to run at 153 points.
can I run folding@home on two computer at once?
You sure can. Just make sure to use the same team number and user. I run Folding on my current rig, and part-time on my wife's (my old rig). Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon The complexity and size of the Work Unit determine the point value.... As you will see, some people have a small number of WU's and alot of points, and others have MORE WU's and LESS points. Posted by: joshd wow, TF folding seems to have increased in popularity since i did it, all that time ago. I came accross this thread and thought i would take a look. :D sorry to leave you guys... but I now do World Community Grid, as crunching for cancer means alot more to me. Posted by: b1gapl I was wondering if it is ok to run a game while folding. Because I was playing doom 3 and I forgot that I had Folding@Home on. I didn't experience lag or anything. Posted by: Trotter Folding sets itself as lowest priority, so you're good. BF2 doesn't play well with it, though. Posted by: joshd yea, it should be fine, although i remember it depended what game were you playing, some just dont like it. that stuff i run at the moment uses alot more ram though, some units can take up to 400MB, so i have to close it when gaming. what does F@H use up normally? Posted by: Apokalipse whatever your CPU has spare. if your CPU isn't being used, folding@home will take up it all if you're running a CPU intensive program, running at 90%, folding@home will only use the other 10% Posted by: joshd no, ram wise. Posted by: Apokalipse it depends on the work unit. I'm not on my own PC right now, so I can't check how much it's using Posted by: kfc469 ok, so I just got this an I'm trying to get the screen saver to work. I cant seem to find it under display properties and when I choose the screen saver option on the folding at home program, my windows screen saver still comes on. For example: I set my folding at home screen saver to come on after 5 mins, but my windows screen saver comes on a little while later. I need the windows screen saver because it automatically locks my comp. Thanks Posted by: Simon i joined. Posted by: cvb724 Sounds awesome :D. I am going to 'sneak' and instance of console folding onto my girl's Cor 2 Duo laptop (it's mine, but she uses it) and that will bring me to 3, and if I EVER get XP working again on my gaming rig, that will be 4..... and if I could change the WU's from an old team (Sudhian Media) I would be at 46,000 points / 176 WU's. Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Well guys, all I have to say is that I am gunning for #1 spot on the team..... As of yesterday, I now have 3 machines folding... (2 CPU clients, 1 GPU client). I started my Shuttle SN25P with the HIS X1950XT (details in Sig) with the GPU client this morning... When I get home from work, I am going to see if the GPU and CPU clients will run side by side without fighting... Also, since I just put new Arctic Silver 5 on my CPU on Wednesday, I am still in the 'break-in' stages, so I will be turning that PC off before bed every night, and turn it on before work in the mornings unitl around the middle of January, maybe beginning of February, depending on how the temps are.... I don't want this rig to fall apart on me again due to heat issues... (previously, it would run stable only at 1.8 GHz, and even then, all the fans would be at 100%).. EDIT: Folding was a no-go on the laptop... she doesn't want it on there, and would pitch a fit if she 'discovered' it.... It doesn't really matter though, cause it goes into hibernation when it is closed, and it is closed 99% of the time... might finsih 1 WU a month if that..../EDIT Posted by: Shumway Cool :D Trying to get me a little folding farm together too,Just waiting on some ram (1gig) Then i'll be getting my old sempron up running again which will be 24/7,I have another little p3-733 that i usually run but for some reason it's having problem's and restarting it's self here and there  Come on all you other guy's,We know you have old part's and that sitting around so now's a good time to put something together and do some extra folding,I'm tired of seeing TF hover around the #650 mark so come on!!! :p Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon If I had the room and could afford the electric bill increase, I have about 5 PC's sitting in a closet in my parents house, but they probably wouldn't do too much... Posted by: Shumway I wish i could find crap like that  The most you can find is like a p-133,Heck people think those old comp's are worth more than gold here,There's people trying to get $250 for a p3-450 and that just cause it has a free mouse and keyboard,For some reason they alway's sell too,But when i try getting like $75 for my p3-733 i get like 1 email and then they complain it's too much and i never here from them again :( Posted by: nitestick at least i know value :D i have my own stock pile of parts and i sell what i pick up :) Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon ARg...... so the GPU client isn't playing nice with my machine... I tried both the GUI and Console version on my machine, and it is taking 30+ minutes per FRAME.... telling me that it will complete the WU around May of 2008...... SO... I closed them, OC'd the clocks a little, and still got the same result... Next step, I installed Catalyst 6.12 from ATi's website.... that went smoothly, and rather than working units until the end of time, I was getting MASSIVE EUE (early Unit end, or something to that effect). SO, in all my brilliance (close to midnight, eyelids duct-taped open) I ripped out all the ATi software (and something else too, not sure what though) and now the computer takes about 15-20 minute to boot, IF it boots at all.... I then tried to boot in safemode and correct, to no avail.... then did a system restore to BEFORE I fudged it up, STILL boots wierd, so I am just going to format it and start from the beginning... Good thing that WoW, BF2, and drivers were the only things installed... lol I guess I will try to get the GPU client working off the bat before any other software installs on this..... Posted by: Trotter Gotta love betas, eh E_D? Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Yes, gotta love the beta's... like Vista running on my gaming rig not detecting the integrated sound hardware... lol. Oh well.. I just have to figure out which Cat. version is bundled with the card. I am thinking it is 6.6 or 6.7, due to what the F@H ATI FAQ says... I guess I will upgrade to 6.10 after the fresh install, or maybe 6.11.....
Versions 6.6 and 6.7 will work, but at a major performance hit; 6.8 and 6.9 will not work at all. Due to all the complexities of support, we will support only versions 6.5, 6.10, and 6.11. Version 6.12 does not work correctly, but we are expecting that the 7.x series to solve that problem.
Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon YAY!! I officailly have the GPU client software running on my Gaming Rig... It completes 1% of WU's in about 9 minutes, so 900 min per WU so far... I completed 1, and the 2nd is 60% done right now... gonna hit that 30K milestone by Monday hopefully!!! EDIT: Update 01/05/07 11:10 CST: Well, my rig finished another WU this morning minutes before I left for work... that's 2 in 2 days. That isn't to mention the 5-6 hours I had folding turned off while I was playing BF2 the past 2 nights. Once I have this rig broken in, (just re-applied the thermal paste), I am gonna run it with the GPU client 24x7, which should be do-able, cause this is the GAMING ONLY rig, and I don't play games unless my girl goes out or is asleep. /EDIT Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Looking at our overtake outlook, I am estimating that we should be ranked in the 500's by the end of February!! My GPU client finishes a work unit in roughly 16 hours at stock clocking.... my CPU client on the same machine would take 48-60 hours to do the same.... anyone with an ATi x1xxx card should be able to run the GPU client... I know that (pretty much all) the x1800-x1950's are able to run it, and I think the x1650 can too... not positive, you would have to check at the folding @ home forums, GPU section. Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Well, in other news, I am back down to 2 PC's folding... my media rig is shot for the time being.... (See sig). The video card MAY have bit the dust, but I HOPE not, cause I want my TiVo rig back... lol. I have a SINGLE spare AGP card to try out when I get home today. I spent 2 hours last night cleaning out the GPU heat sink with a Q-tip, and also the CPU heatsink... I have been a bad person, WAAAAAAAY too much dust in there... lol. I put some AS5 on the CPU heatsink, so HOPEFULLY that helps the CPU, now I just have to do the same with the GPU later today probably. I am fairly certain it is a heat issue, since it is the same thing my NES did back in the day where everything was all jumbled up. Like watching HBO on a TV without a cable box.. lol More to follow later. Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon HOOORRAY !!! My media rig is successfully up and folding once again. The trouble was that my ATI AIW card was overheating. I threw an AGP ATI Rage Pro 3D 128 something or other, and it started up fine... so I took out the AIW card, carefully took off the heatsink, cleaned it, and slathered on some AS5, and put it back. Let me tell you.... doing that to a GPU can seem pretty intimidating... but, since I thought the card was toast anyways, I wasn't worried about fudging it up, and GOOD THING too... it was SOOOO easy to do, and took literally minutes to do... SITTING ON THE COUCH... lol Anyways... thats my 3rd post in a row... do I have a turkey now? I am thinking of just sticking an old POS card in there for the time being and then having an excuse to pick up a nice Hauppage dual tuner card.... shh.. don't tell.. lol At least with the POS GPU the rig can fold again.... Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Another.... anyway... So I turned on the PC a few days ago, and FORGOT about it.... well, I have the AIW card in it, and it has been up and fine since... I have NO IDEA what the deal is with this... it is happily folding away. Posted by: Snake-Eyes I am discontinuing running Folding @ Home because it would take way too long to finish a work unit. It took me several days to get 7K out of a 20K work unit, when i was averaging roughly 15/second. At that rate i should have been done within 23 hours and i had my computer on for well more than 23 hours in the past week. It said i still had another 48 hours. Posted by: Trotter A 20K??? No wonder you weren't making a lot of headway. 20K would take a heckuva long time to process, but it is worth a heckuva lot of points. I usually process smaller units (250, 350, or so), which take around 24 hours depending on how I'm using my computer. Posted by: Snake-Eyes Am i able to set how big of a WU i get? Posted by: Shumway Umm  I don't know :o Posted by: talldude123
Originally posted by Ethereal_Dragon C'mon Talldude... lets get folding.. lo;
What happens, do you upload data to their site and that gives you points, or is it the CPU usage? Because at night, I just usally download stuff on Utorrent, so I could fold. Somebody give me some instructions? What to download, how to set up?
You only get point's when you finish a WU,Your comp automatically upload's it once it's done and it will download a new WU to work on,It's not hard to fold,All you do is download the program and leave the comp on,Can't get any more simpler than that  Posted by: Trotter It's scary when you make sense, Shumway. I'm glad it doesn't happen often. :D Posted by: Shumway I don't know,For some odd reason i'm making more sense now then what i did before  :freak: Posted by: Trotter DEAR GOD... HE'S SOBERING UP!!!! Quick, throw me a 12-pack! Don't worry, man... it happens to the best of us. Notmally, it's only temporary. Posted by: b1gapl Stupid question....but can I run two instances of F@H on a dual core? One instance of F@H running on each core? Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon Yes, you can B1gapl.... there is a part about that in the FAQ.... Link: Running on Dual Core Machines
Does Folding@home run on dual processor or multi-core machines? Yes, you can in two ways. For linux or OSX/Intel, one can run our SMP client. For other platforms, additional processors must run the console version (with the "-local" command-line argument if run on Windows). First, make additional directories for each processor and copy the FAH Console executable file into each. Then configure them with the -config switch, filling in settings for each. It is very important to make sure that under the "Advanced Settings" option each copy is given a unique machine ID (from 1 to 8). The first copy will default to a machine ID of 1, so additional copies should be given IDs of 2, 3, 4, etc. Each may then be run out of their installed directory, using the -local switch on windows.
And sorry Trotter... had to pass you up. :D Lookout Nukem, here I come! Posted by: b1gapl When setting the F@H to an affinity, do I set both the FahCore_78.exe and winFAH.exe processes.....for example, to CPU 0, so that I can play a game set to CPU 1? Also when I'm not using the computer, is it better to have F@H run on both cores, because I notice that the CPU Usage is 50%, and the other I'm guessing is 50%. Or is it better to set it to one core, so it can use 100% of it. Posted by: Shumway b1gapl,You would probably get a better answer over @ the Folding forum's for this question :) Posted by: Snake-Eyes I tried going through the F@H signature "tutorial" and it doesn't work for me. I completed a WU less that an hour ago, and already have over 200 frames done on my next one. I used the second method and alternate here. Posted by: Ethereal_Dragon The stats server is NOT real time, so sometimes it takes a few hours for the stats to update.... vBulletin Copyright ©2000 - 2003, Jelsoft Enterprises Limited.
