DVD-R : Backed by the DVD Forum ([URL]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_Forum[/URL]) and developed by Pioneer.

[URL]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-R[/URL]

DVD+R : Developed with DVD+RW Alliance by Sony and Philips.

[URL]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD%2BR[/URL]

Not only are there developments differences, but also physical, technological differences between the two formats, even if they may look the same.

They are two competing DVD recordable formats.
